No not military, he is a west coast BC pilot. slinging long lines, in out of tight spots day in/out for forestry work, fire fighting etc. I had complete trust in him, had to do hover enter and exit a few times too...not just toe ins.

Wow. Back in my younger days, I used to hover like that, and in a C model which was slightly underpowered than this D. Great finesse in handling the offset of the crewmen getting in, while holding positions. Of course, the trees block any wind, but still superbly skillful and, in getting out. Well done.

Much respect for mountain chopper pilots. Flew in the flat lands. Came out to fight fire in BC one year and almost crapped my drawers during my first toe-in on a wooded mountainside. A slope-side pad in 300 foot timber looks like a postage stamp compared to a pad in the flats in 100 foot timber. Lots of verticalling to get in and out for sure.

Awesome skill. I flew OH-6's in the military, you could land them anywhere there was enough room for the rotor disk...even in my back yard once!

I was a wildland firefighter and a linecutter and met some awesome pilots. Toe-ins always made me nervous. Man I miss the flights to and from work. Perfect end to a long day. 😁 🤘❤🇨🇦

Excellent hovering job and keeping it stable in one position while loading passengers on the skids with shifting balances. This pilot was exceptionally smooth hovering in ground effect.

Fantastic pilot! Compensating for the weight when people were boarding even though he was had his skids in. You would still get a weight transfer when the guy got into the rear passenger compartment. Great flying & excellent video, Thanks for sharing it.!

Great to hear all the positive comments. For the people who insist on giving their negative, armchair opinions on whether it is safe or not, keep your dumb-ass comments to yourself - obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. Regardless of the country of origin, once you get past the licencing, flight instruction jobs, tour pilot jobs and the like, you get into stuff like this. This is what we do all day long - this is our job and we do it professionally. Great video.

Our unit flys Astars but used to fly 500's. I missed out on flying them but the guys said they were solid in a hover in ground effect. Clearly, they are and that took great skill and concentration. If I tried that in an Astar it would have been much more of a challenge. That was awesome! I would love to try something like that.

WowSmooth👍⛾I remember a MD500 pilot saying that the best way to set one down was to plop it down & let the struts absorb the impact. I don't think he would be a good candidate for this type of operation🖖😎☮

First floor ladies lingerie and tree tops. 👍 The pilot has skillz! I grew up in NZ at the time of the Deer -Wars- Hunting so was very used to seeing these sorts of skills displayed every day and those guys were nuts but great skills. The only thing I regret about this video is the image resolution and there is nothing you could have done at the time. Nice job having the SA to video it. *Thank You* Jordan.

we had a pilot. called him cowboy Bob. Wore dirty overalls and his cap on backwards. chewed tobacco so ya stuck to everything inside the chopper. wouldn't even bother to land he'd just hover. in the hills of Hinton Alberta. ah. the memories. great to be young and bullet proof. And we were a little insane when break up came. no fat on us though. 3-D seismic. gotta love it
