This is one of London's Air Ambulances landing to an unknown emergency call in the Victoria Embankment Gardens, notice the use of their siren, used for clearing obstructions such as people from their selected landing area in the city. After they landed, their attendance was no longer needed and the team procceded back to the helicopter to take off again. Enjoy!

Here you can see very well how perfectly the rotor blade adjustment is set to "neutral" while the helicopter is waiting: No flower is moving. The moment the rotor blade adjustment changes to lift mode, the flowers suddenly experience absolute terror! Great technology.

To all those saying that this aircraft is not fitted with a siren - you’re wrong. The two pilots use the siren (wail/yelp) to help in clearing a landing site. There is also a PA system, allowing either pilot to broadcast a verbal message to the public below. It can be heard briefly from 0:11. Then at 1:27, you can see the aft-facing speakers for the siren & PA system, mounted to both skid cross tubes.

Yeah cos as you can clearly see from this very footage - people's normal reaction upon seeing the heli coming in to land nearby, is to _immediately_ rush towards it to get the best view. And the crew aboard can't afford anyone to get too close otherwise they have to abort the landing - and that can mean the difference between life and death. And police aren't always able to get to the landing scene in time and in enough numbers to help clear it. So, siren it is!! It's pretty effective too, from what I can tell. Although it does confuse quite a few people like "wait ... is that siren coming from the _helicopter_ ??!! That's ...weird" LOL

One would think that the sudden gale force winds and the rotor chop, whine of the engine and the NOTAR would be enough of an indication that a helicopter is about to land...also ground crew but hey. @heli-crewhgs5285 Жыл бұрын
@@braydendeakin4092 You cannot have a ground crew at the scene of a sudden emergency. Having viewed the scene from the air, the pilots advise the London Ambulance Service of where they intend to land, and that is passed on to the police. They in turn (assuming they arrive in time), do what they can to clear the landing site. The police often drive the helicopter’s doctor and paramedic from the aircraft to scene of the incident.

The NOTAR is the main attraction for LAA, but it's also the fact they've operated one for almost 20 years. G-EHMS, the older aircraft, only has 6,000 hours which isn't awful for an emergency services helicopter. There is also poor planning though, when G-LNDN was purchased there was shock that they were sticking with the MD902 because it's becoming a very rare helicopter with spare parts rare too. Maintenance is hard and expensive with long groundings, and LAA flies pretty heavy now with the crew commonly being 5. A 135 or 145 would be a lot more efficient for them, but the cost savings with a 145 aren't that great as it's derived from the BK117

Might be tricky sometimes to get the best shortcut to the scene, since the landing zone very often is not close by. And yes, London HEMS teams consist of 2 pilots, a doctor and a paramedic, plus very often another physician or paramedic in training as well.
@Manic97LP
@Manic97LP 5 жыл бұрын
Quickstep80 Why such a big team? In Germany, we use one pilot, one emergency doctor and one paramedic with a special training. Two pilots are only used for night flights for better observing of the airspace.
@Quickstep80
@Quickstep80 5 жыл бұрын
@@Manic97LP London airspace has a different and quite challenging traffic situation. Thus a second pilot, who can bring that "extra pair of aviation eyes and ears" to the cockpit. This team configuration also means that the medical crew (doctor/paramedic) can immediately focus on patient treatment on scene, since the paramedic doesn't need to act as a "HEMS crewmember" for flight and scene safety duties. And a standard crew of 4 is not necessarily an unusually "big team". Many European HEMS providers fly with a crew of 4 without having two pilots - imagine a crew of pilot, doctor, paramedic and winch operator.

@Douglas Campbell normally if we have a trauma and need a medivac police and fire are already on scene. We secure the landing zone so civillians don't get to close and get injured. We don't fly as many medical patients, ecspecially in an urban setting unless it is from hospital to hospital.
@beauhutchison6309
@beauhutchison6309 5 жыл бұрын
@Douglas Campbell I think that you miss read what I said. We fly medical patients on occasion such as strokes, heart attach, etc from rual areas where transport would take to long. They also fly critical patients (trauma and medical) from one hospital to the next for specialty care. We fly many trauma patients. Mostly from a rual area to a trauma center. We only do critical care patient transfers with helicopters when the patient is unstable and could code at any minute. This is were a 5 minute medivac is better than a 20 minute ambulance ride in traffic. Our trauma teams have doctor's on the helo and the staff have advanced training. I'm not quite sure that they could do such a delicate procedure but they are more than capable of timely and effective care.

This is built by MD, and is called a NOTAR or NO TAil Rotor. It has a fan located at the back of the main gearbox that blows large volumes of air down the tail boom, and it is this air that counters the torque. It results in a compact and lightweight design, and increases reliability by eliminating driveshafts, elbows, and tailrotor gearbox that would be required for a conventional design (either blade or fenestron).

It takes an awful lot of convincing that an air ambulance DOES have a siren that can be used if circumstances dictate for example as we've just seen crowd dispersal to clear the landing site safely and to avoid any injuries caused by being blown over by the downdraft of the propeller blades....now they can and have caused serious injuries because the public don't realise how powerful that down draught can be!!!!!.

Helicars are also known as MAGPAS usually sent to heart attacks and road traffic crashes, ie very life threatening with a trauma doctor or a senior paramedic, both trained in field surgery, on some shifts Consultant Surgeons may be on call. This came about as doctors cars had green flashing lights and one got a speeding ticket from the police, the police refused to stop the claim on the NHS employee. This caused outrage in NHS so the Courts ruled and throu the case out. Since then Doctors cars now have atleast one blue light with green "Doctor" signage; all blue lights with NHS Emergency signage, so they can legally speed. All blue lighted are now signed up as Helimedic or MAGPAS Emergency, I have see a few with signed up as "NHS A&E Trauma Doctor". If they don't have a NHS sticker on the vehicle then they can't use blue and twos, same for ambulances.

think of it this way the the air ambulance gives the ability of bringing a intensive care unit and a operating theatre to the scene and the helicopter is the quickest way to get specilist care to the scene and actually in the majority of the time the air ambulance crew consisting of a doctor and a critical care paramedic will go in a land ambulance with the patient to hospital typically only times a patient will be transported by helicopter is if the journey by road would take longer than 30 minutes however in very rare cases possibly in area where the only access is to by helicopter will the air ambulance be sent out alone since it would take a normal crew a long time to hike to the patient

Why would a helicopter even need a siren, as they make that much racket ,you would hear it from a good distance! - Makes no sense to me ,And think that siren was coming from emergency vehicles on the ground. I think it was a bad idea for the Author to even mention a siren in the first place ,even if its true, as it's clearly causing controversy,with members focusing more on the siren than the video itself 🎉

The helicopter is ran by a charity funded by donations. The service itself is managed and controlled on a day to day basis by the London Ambulance Service which is a Government NHS trust, the care that is provided is free of charge to the patient.

I did not know land ambulances travelled at 150mph in a straight line or could travel across London in 15-20 minutes? Maybe because it's about delivering a doctor to the scene quickly, and maybe they actually do have cars as well! Helicopters are helicopters, there is a reason they are not combined with a road vehicle.

This is insane! They are landing on an unsecured LZ in an urban area! No Firefighters or Police to secure the LZ. That’s taking a huge risk, assuming that every bystander knows about LZ safety. Not wanting to Monday morning QB but risk/benefit just doesn’t make sense to do this.

James Bentley Sorry, didn’t share my credentials. I’m a 27 year Career Firefighter/Paramedic who has interfaced hundreds of times over the years with our MedFlight Service. It has one of the best safety records in the US and they have strict LZ procedures. There’s no “Cowboy” flying and the pilots are very professionalZ like beau Hutchison said we secure it for the safety of the the crews but also the public. Another huge safety concern, especially for transitioning helos is power lines. We make sure the LZ is clear of all potential hazards and notify the pilot of any issues directly by radio.
