The Helinox chair zero is a lightweight camping/hiking chair that promises comfort and back support at just over a pound (495 grams). We've spent a good deal of time on the trail with it and share our experiences.

I bought a BTR stool last year for hiking/camping. Love it. You can whip it out to take a break on the trail. But it's not that good at the campfire for relaxing. That's where the Zero comes into play. If I could, I'd take both.

I use the Zero for just about every break. My I-need-a-chair laziness always seems to win from my I-don't-feel-like-setting-this-up laziness 😁

Have been using a Trekology for the past 3 years and very happy about it. Such a chair transforms the camping experience after a long day on the saddle. Tried the Helinox and found it a bit flimsy, not to mention way too expensive. The Trekology also comes with height adjustable feet - very useful on slopy terrain...

Another great option! Adjustable feet would indeed be nice, if only to be able to sit a few inches higher. I agree the Helinox is too expensive when weight is not a factor.

The timing for this video is perfect. In the winter I ditch my light hammock and use only the UL chairs or some foam buttpad. Over here in Provence+Alps the ground is just horrible, it's only rocks sticking out of a thin topsoil, pine needles and scrubs. Chairs or hammocks are the perfect solution for avoiding getting bruised, bitten by ants, getting your pants punctured. In these conditions, inflatables wouldn't last a day. So one one hand I have the 750gr 3F-UL light chair (from aliexpress) which I bought for 46euros then, it's a tad taller, a stiffer structure. And then there is my Helinox Zero which I paid the same as you, which I weighted at 575gr but requires 250gr extra for some Vibram balls so it doesn't sink in the ground. So in reality it could be a 850gr chair. In the end I went into a Carrefour (France) and got a pack of 4 x 22mm diameter "embouts en caoutchouc" for stabilizing ironing boards. With a diameter of 22mm, they slip perfectly onto the Zero's existing feet, like slippers, and increase the footprint. One pack only cost me 5 euros and the 4 slippers combined add only 48gr. So I leave them on. But yeah, had I known about the final weight, I would have felt just fine with the 3F-UL. Also, the 5y warranty and the good feedbacks from many Helinox customers convinced me.

We're hoping to test out some hammocks next summer. Nice job on the DIY feet! 575gr for the chair zero seems weirdly heavy though. Is it a special version?
@DenisSolaro
@DenisSolaro 2 жыл бұрын
@@BelgianHikers oh nice about the hammocks. I've tested many European brands like DD hammocks before finding my match with the custom ones made by Dutchware. the hard thing to find here are good down underquilts and all of the dyneema suspensions. for the chair it was including the bag, but if you want I'll double check that once I get home.

@@BelgianHikers a-ha ! found the error. My zero is 525gr with bag, the extra 50gr are those 4 slippers I mentioned.

Hi, Are you still enjoying your Riese & Muller Supercharger 2? Its really hard to find owner reviews, that's why I enjoyed your review you did. Would you consider doing a long term review?
@BelgianHikers
@BelgianHikers 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm definitely still enjoying it. I haven't commuted as much as I thought I would (due to Covid) but I do use it all the time. I've thought about doing a long term review but I've had the rear ring changed to get a lower cadence at higher speeds, so that makes my experiences a bit less universal (and perhaps less interesting) for people buying a stock bike.

At my age I need to sit down at the end of the day You can also sit forward with your legs crossed

I hear you, it's either that or lying down. 😂 Right, cross-legged works too. I may have exaggerated that part a bit. Mostly it just takes some getting used to.

I hear you :-) I sometimes go as far as to deploy a light hammock (cloud71 fabric from Dutchwaregear) and take a nap.

I'm quite intruiged by the idea of taking one of these "inflatable air bags" instead of a chair. For the price and weight it seems like a complete bargain over something like the Helinox Zero. I can't find any written accounts of anyone trying this though. If anyone has tried this then I would be very curious to hear how they (dis) liked it.

I came across a post about this on Reddit recently, but I can't seem to find it. Most people commenting thought it was a dumb idea, but I think with a good ground sheet it would be worth a try.

@@BelgianHikers so I got me one of those bags as mentioned and took it for a proper test run along the Offa's Dyke Path. I camped it out for 13 days (mostly in grass fields or managed campsite pitches) and this thing was a godsent. Very pleased with my purchase and the Helinox seems like an expensive joke to me right now. Although it has to be said that this bag is probably not suited for any terrain that is not a grass field or pitch.

I have one, I weigh 250 lbs, muscular. Don’t buy this thing, it will break. Uneven ground is its enemy.

@BelgianHikers 2 жыл бұрын
Well that's indeed near the max weight limit. I'm pretty comfortable recommending it up to about 200 lbs as long as you're ok with it bending and wobbling a little. Keep in mind that there's tons of other options for people who prefer a more sturdy built chair.

This is not a Belgian it's an American saying blablablablablablablablablablablabla and things like "they made this chair as light as possible" (USING ALUMINUM AND NYLON INSTEAD OF CARBON FIBRE AND DCF) And for the high price of this CHEAPLY MADE chair I HATE this chair!
