HELIOS 44-2 Cinematic: The Cascade Way (Shot on RED Komodo + Canon Speed Booster)

Күн бұрынI've been meaning to dust off my old Helios 44-2 for a while now after seeing some amazing footage when paired with the RED Komodo and Canon 0.71x speed booster, so I thought a fitting winter break to Longleat would be the perfect opportunity to play around with it. Needless to say, I think the footage from this lens speaks for itself. Slightly tricky to use without all the new features you see in modern day lenses, but my god is it worth it. So much character, and couldn't have asked for a more perfect crisp early morning.
Shot at Centre Parks, Longleat, UK over the course of 2 hours as the sun was rising. No filters, just a Tiffen VND (with about 5000 step up rings) and all shot at 6K 17:9 LQ at 40fps and downscaled to 4K in the edit. Graded using Phantom LUTs and a sprinkling of dehancer for a touch of film emulation, all in premiere pro (beleive it or not! hah).

Outstanding shots!! Can't believe what I've watched! Now you sold me on the focal reducer since I own a RED Komodo and the Helios 44-2. Always used it without the focal reducer and wondered why I don't get the famous helios swirly bokeh i was looking for! Thank you for this!

Ahh thanks so much man! Yea it makes such a difference especially if you want to see the most of the characteristics of the lens, a little tricky to operate but is so much fun to use!

Hahaa one of the best comments I’ve had 🤣 But you won’t regret it at all, I promise!In the right situation this lens is so so good, and it’s so fun to shoot with. But obviously can be a bit too much for like 90% of shoots 😅 if you do pick one up make sure it’s in good condition, they’re pretty hit or miss. And have a look into the different manufacturers (indicated by the logo on the front) and they apparently differ in quality too!

Thanks so much! I think I got mine from eBay, just look out for a certain symbol/manufacturer on the front of the lens (you can find out from a quick google), they’re apparently the best ones to get!

Thanks mate! It’s a combination of a phantom base LUT, subtle curve adjustments and a light dusting of Dehancer film emulation ontop ✨

Thanks so much man! I have one of the earlier models (KMZ?) in pretty good condition actually, just a little oil on the aperture blades but apart from that, super happy with it!

STUNNING WORK! Were you shooting wide open? Mine goes proper ghosty / low contrast when wide open, although most of my vintage lenses do.

Yea pretty much was wide open for the whole thing 😅 yea it does a little, especially when shooting directly at the sun, but I tried to compensate for the by underexposing a bit and adding a punchy grade, but that being said, the lens I have seems to be a pretty good one compared to others I’ve seen!

@@bandwagonbull yeah I wonder if mine is not a great copy... It's a real faff to shoot with on the Komodo too in terms of focusing etc, you did a great job managing that!

@@EdProsser Oh yea it's tricky as hell, and there was plenty that went straight in the bin haha especially when you get so used to sharp and easy modern lenses are, but I found that was the fun part of it, trying to get it as good as you can. But then again, would've been a different story with a client breathing down my neck hah

Do you encounter any infinity focus issue with helios 44-2 and your canon speed booster? I'm using mine with metabones and it seems infinity focus is not working right..

I haven’t noticed anything so far! Although I haven’t really been looking out for that really, will have to double check though as I’ve heard similar things from a few different people!
