Richard Matheson was one of the most prolific and influential horror/science-fiction writers of the twentieth century. If you're a GenXer or a Boomer, and you grew up with any interest whatsoever in horror and sci-fi, you'll know Matheson's work even if you don't know his name. He gave us some of the most memorable episodes of The Twilight Zone and crafted teleplays for such well-known films as The Night Stalker and Trilogy of Terror. Matheson worked with some of the best in the film business, including Rod Serling, Roger Corman, and Steven Spielberg. He has been named as a creative influence by the likes of Stephen King and George Romero.
In this video, I provide a brief overview of some of Matheson's work preparatory to my review of one of his most well-regarded novels: 1970's "Hell House," which Stephen King has called potentially the greatest haunted house story ever written. "Hell House" is the story of four people sent by a dying millionaire to spend one week in Maine's infamous Belasco house, also known as "Hell House" and "the Mount Everest of Haunted Houses." This is the one place where psychic phenomena have never been debunked, and two previous expeditions to the house both ended in disaster--with only one man emerging from carnage.
"Hell House" is somewhat unique in that it combines both scientific rigor and traditional physic powers in the investigation of one of mankind's greatest unsolved mysteries: Is there life after death? The novel is well written, the characters are believable and engaging, and perhaps best of all, the novel has a solid ending that provides the reader with definitive answers to all of the story's major questions. The novel was adapted into a movie -- "The Legend of Hell House" -- staring Clive Revill, Gail Hunnicutt, Roddy McDowell, and Pamela Franklin, in 1973.

The Atlantean Archive focuses on books, short stories, movies, and television shows of the past, up through the 1980s, although we may cover more current things from time to time as well. I also hope to (eventually) bring you interviews with some of the stars and creators who helped shape the culture that influenced my generation. My emphasis is on horror, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, movies, and TV shows that time forgot, general 70s and 80s nostalgia, and (occasionally) more serious historical content.

I saw the movie before reading the novel. I really enjoyed the movie and saw it on television a few times. I then saw the novel at Barnes and Noble and enjoyed thet also. It is difficult to be disappointed by Richard Matheson!

He was an amazing talent, and had so much influence on the development of horror and sci-fi. BTW, I saw the movie before reading the book as well.

Love Richard Matheson - uniquely disturbing, and can hear his echo in King’s best work.

Yes, definitely. In fact, I've wondered if King might not have gotten the idea for the "shine" in part from this book.

Absolutely. I doubt we'll ever see a faithful theatrical adaptation. A three or four-episode miniseries might happen, though.

Check out “The Omega Man” - not a perfect film by any stretch, but far superior to “I am Legend”, if you like the weird dread evoked in the novella.

Read the book first. I'm a big Matheson fan, Love his Twilight Zone episodes. Check out Vincent Price's Last Man on Earth.

@@CordellPotts The Last Man on Earth was a solid adaptation. Matheson didn't like Vincent Price in the lead because he envisioned his protagonist as an everyman type character, and he thought Price was too strong of a personality for that. I enjoyed him in that role, though.
