For anyone interested in the roots of Hellblade: "The Prose Edda" and "The Poetic Edda" are two books I'd recommend. It's a collection of stories, poems and templates of the norse mythology. They are actually very similar in tone to this game I think. Violent, imaginative and comprehensive. Really fast read... but lingers in your mind for much longer.
@daniel_john3167
@daniel_john3167 5 жыл бұрын
Remember though, the prose edda and poetic edda are written by a Christian, and as a pagan myself I can very clearly tell this, there are much better books to read however I do agree the eddas are a good source of information for someone just getting into heathenry

@RavnDream I've talked to quite a few modern pagans and all of them claimed to know better books, but those I had researched back then (this was about 10 years ago) were just modern interpretations of the myths, in the end doing almost the same thing Sturluson did, but with modern or sadly even völkisch inspirations instead of christian ones. As far as I can tell, the eddas are still the best books to get a broad and solid understanding of the old myths, despite of the caveat of being heavily "spoiled" by christian symbolism.

@@daniel_john3167 I'm an atheist myself, but I am interested in the idea of being a "cultural Norse pagan" if such a thing can be said to exist. Can you recommend some good material for someone who wants to honor their ancestors, even if they don't share those same beliefs? I hope this makes some sense, BTW.

I have been putting this game off due to negative feedback regarding the very easy combat and primitive puzzles. How foolish i was...Yes, the puzzles are simple, but they perfectly underline Senua's psychological state and yes for someone like me who has hundreds of hours on souls like games, the fights are no challenge, but...with these movements and these Nordic chants, that sound during every fight, along with the voices that accompany you throughout the game, make the fights so epic. I finished the game twice in two days...I had to see it again, I had to hear it again, I had to feel it again...because this is not just a game, this is Art and this Art is Experience and this Experience is Madness...

One of the most immersive games I ever played, and that's mainly thanks to the soundtrack, the voices in Senua's head and the overall world design. I had the chillest goosebumps throughout the game, and I almost crapped my pants in a few spots. And it also brought tears to my eyes a few times. Definitely not for everyone. The combat is repetitive and boring, and the puzzles can be underwhelming after a while. But I will never forget this game, that's for sure. Incredibly unique experience. And yet the whole experience was so terrorizing, I can't bring myself to play it again. I suspect it might have done actual damage to my soul.

psychologically probably because she has realistic human features that your brain thus emphasizes towards. Your brain is so good at this it doesn't even have to be as realistic as this game is. You know it's just a 3D model you're looking at but your brain subconsciously still feels for it cuz it sees it as a person. But technicalities aside you know that there really are people out there who have mental illnesses like this and also you can relate really well to emotions in stories. Humans LOVE stories, so perhaps one of those gets to you. In simplest of terms, it's just part of being human.

Fantastic game, loved it all the way through. And this soundtrack certainly added to that great experience. However, this soundtrack is one of those that just doesn't work if you listen to it outside the game. Strip away the fantastic graphics, intriguing characters, gripping story, puzzles and action, and this is all you have to show for it. I wondered why I couldn't remember the music from this; some of the tracks are way too heavy and the rest are forgettable.

It is up to you. I recommend you finish the game because as saddening as the dialogue of the game can be at times, the overall experience is like no other. The combat can be challenging (depending on what difficulty you chose) but the mysterious and macarbe backdrop over this pict/norse background is really beautiful and fascinating. You dont even know what is real until the very end.

I ABSOLUTELY think so. My only suggestion would be not to play on hard, it makes the enemies too spongy later on and it's really the story you're going to play this for. Definitely one of my favorites from the last couple years, I'd highly suggest it.

From what I can tell, some are English, whilst the other parts are probably some version of Norweigan, Danish or Swedish. I'm Swedish but can't pick out what they're saying so I'll also guess it's an older language as well, probably closer to Icelandic even, since that's the closest modern language we have that's similar to old Norse.
@JojoWest

@@avananana The guy singing in a lot of this is Andy LaPlegua, he's from Norway so a lot of it is probably Norwegian. There might be some Danish, but is more than likely he spoke his own language. I also recommend you check out his other music. Love his bands.

@@lolitabubbles26 It's a mix of Norwegian in there for sure. For example, they use "Ødelagga. Ødelagga" which means 'to destroy'. But a lot of it is really hard to make out even as a native speaker. I don't think all of it is actual real words it's just to convey a theme.
