I am always baffled that there are schmucks out there who actually downvote videos like this. What a fantastic lesson man. Thank you, as ever, for such stellar content..

When I first heard this song a hundred years ago - it was, and still is, possibly the saddest song I"ve heard as it captures the inevitability and challenges of growing old. A call for us to continue to love others even when they are weak. Thanks so much for the lesson David - very clear and I got your tab to complete the chorus. Was very saddened to hear that John passed. I did have the chance to see him back in the mid-70s...

Just what I’ve been searching for! I too am in love with John Prine songs. This was my introduction to his music - Joan Baez performed this one on KZfaq as he lay hospitalized with covid 19 on a ventilator. As she sang, tears suddenly welled up as emotion overwhelmed me. I knew I had to learn about this man and his music. As a senior beginner guitar player I’m picky about what I learn and who I learn from. Not that much time to waste, after all. You’ve got a gift for teaching... no, actually it’s more than that... you ARE a teacher. It’s in everything you give us as you open our understanding of timing and playing these songs so well. I’m so glad I found this one, finally! Thanks so very much, David. 🙏💞

I, too, am a beginning senior (73 3 years now) who has always loved JP. I had to learn this myself and with your instructions, and lots of practice, I can see the day when I can actually play it smoothly. Thanks

Hi David, I have been working on this song coincidentally over the last few days and then this pops up! It has really helped - thank you. Losing John is a terrible tragedy, thankfully his music will live on! Appreciate all you do - you are by far the best guitar tutor on the net!

Hi David, Another incredible lesson on such a beautifully haunting and moving song about loneliness and growing old. I’ve been looking for an outstanding lesson on this song for quite some time, and I finally found it here on your site. You are an excellent teacher as witnessed by this song tutorial, and by every lesson that you post. Your teaching aides (your song sheets) are clear, precise, and painstakingly accurate. This song is a work of art by an amazing songwriter, and your lesson respectfully pays homage to its brilliance. Thank you.

Thank you David. I'm a somewhat slow learner who would have taken months to play this, and it still would be missing some elements. Now I have it all! This fantastic video, and your 5 pages, hot off the printer! Yeeeee Haaaaa 👌

I have to agree w/ Mr. McComb & add that as simple minded as I am w/dislexia, I am anxious to tackle even the tab section that I've always thought beyond my ken & now I've the motivation to get by my apprehension. You are a great teacher! thank you sir for rekindling my thirst to play again, of course Mr.Prine & Ms Griffith (sorely miss 'em both) along with W.A. Ramsey had a wee hand in it too! Do more schoolin', you've a gift my friend!

Happy Easter and thanks for another fine John Prine lesson! Love those and please keep 'em coming. Maybe consider adding "Souvenirs" and "Unwed Fathers" to the Prine lineup.

if anyone finds that bar 15/16 chord awkward to finger just do it as a thumb-over (f#) d chord. You hold the high e string unnecessarily, but it's probably a more familiar shape for most.
