I was under the impression the value of my bags would continue to go up (not why I bought them) but wow. I sold my last few just recently and lost thousands. I left the luxury bag game and never looking back. Caused me so much fomo and anxiety, always wanting to have the next one I saw. I have invested in a nice little fine jewelry collection instead ❤

exactly the question i ask myself everytime i want to purchase a new bag : "what if it didnt had this logo ?" I just erase the brand name in my head,😂and it helps me decide if i REALLY love the design or is it just the name or the worth (investment)

I think I would maybe enjoy my bags even more in this situation because I would not be afraid of damaging them and reducing their value, and also I would feel a little more free to carry them everywhere if they were not such high value items that can attract all kinds of attention.

Years ago, I bought certain types of LV luggage because I loved it. My health took a turn, diagnosed with ALS. I recently sold almost all of my LV luggage collection except for my beloved Sac Athletisme...and a Cruiser. I don't regret selling at all, I wasn't traveling anymore, enjoying what remains and what looks good with my wheelchair.

Here is my thought. You may agree or not. The luxury handbag market is so fragmented and brands keep on launching new models every month. Prices keep going up, the number of luxury pre loved bags available online is getting bigger and bigger. But consumers cannot keep the pace, too many collections, too expensive, too many preloved bags including Chanel and Hermès. From my perspective, I think pre loved bags are slightly losing their resale value as some of them have been available on sale for a while. Those who resell bags are requesting a high price, but those who are buying new bags keep on reselling them. There is no longer scarcity. The luxury handbag bubble will very soon explode and the situation will go back to where it was 10 years ago before the Instagram era…

Very good food for thought. This is how I helped clean my closet the past two years. I have to absolutely love the item for it to have a place in my closet. I’ve sold 200 items from my closet on eBay and Posh and feel so much better making new purchases. I only have 3 bags in my collection and love every piece even if they hypothetically didn’t have the Chanel logo on them or if I knew they were worth $0. It’s a freeing feeling.

I remember the very first time I saw a speedy 25 in mono, I thought it was the most beautiful bag Ive ever seen and I KNEW I wanted one. I didnt know what brand it was, or how much it cost, and when I got my first job that summer that paid me $8.00/hr, I finally thought to myself that I’d have money to buy that bag! I went ahead and found out what the bag was called and looked on the website and my jaw dropped discovering it cost $500. My 16 yr old self couldnt afford it then, but my adult self could now. The point of my story is that I was attracted to the bag itself because I thought it was beautiful and aesthetically pleasing without knowing who made it, what status it held or how much it cost. PS. My 16 yr old self would be happy to know that, yes, she did get that speedy bag eventually 💕☺️

I think I may sell a couple that I do not reach for very often. But, can’t see myself selling my Alma Fornasetti, the garden loop bag, the vtote, the giant studs pink Valentino, the Chanel coco, the fendi mini sunshine girls edition… etc etc. Those are usable works of art. I will enjoy them for the rest of my life. As for the game of reselling, I think that train left the station when the boutique bags became so expensive, no room for profits. You would be lucky to recoup 60%.

What a fun and fascinating topic to discuss. It’s hard to know what I’d do in reality but I only buy luxury bags that I can see myself using today as well as in 30 years time. I only have four and they are all classic styles so I’m pretty sure I’d just keep them all and continue to enjoy them as I am now. Before I started buying "luxury" I generally bought a very good quality leather handbag about once every 2 years. I focused more on quality and functionality than designer label (at the time I was shopping mid range designer brands and independent labels). I had a small wardrobe of 5 or 6 bags appropriate for different seasons and occasions and I would use my bags until they wore out. I suppose I would go back to that routine, as in many ways it would serve me better than what I've been doing recently. Frankly, I think this is what Hermes is trying to encourage with their quota system - a more rational and sensible rate of collection. I don't think Chanel and Hermes will ever be completely worthless, but the abnormal obsession around the brands is bound to disperse and they will go back to more realistic valuations. So, look out for some real bargains five or ten years from now on pristine, unused bags when all the "investors" dump their inventory. 😂

That's why I buy vintage. The previous owner enjoyed it and the remaining "value" is wat I'm willing to pay. If the design and material withstood the test of time, that's a great "investment" for me even if it is "valued" at $0, it's worth it to ME.

I’m so happy someone has said this. As you stated the market in collectable non-essential items is incredibly volatile. When I first started purchasing designer handbags, accessories & clothing (in 2008), I didn’t even know there was much of a market for pre-loved designer fashion. I purchased the items I loved & was more interested in quality because I intended on owning & using them for a long time. Resale has never been a consideration when I’m making a decision to purchase & it never will be. For me if I even care about resale value, then that item is definitely not for me. Of course I have taken advantage of the current market & sold a few items which I no longer had a use for (for a small profit), but that was simply taking advantage of the market & the profit came from the fact they were at least 10 years old & still in pristine condition (luxury prices were a lot lower 2008 - 2012). To be honest, selling luxury is so stressful (even through consignment), I wouldn’t be in a hurry to do so again. So if all of the sudden pre-loved designer items were worth $0.00, I wouldn’t care, it wouldn’t make any difference to me. I don’t purchase much anymore because the items I purchased 10 or more years ago are still in good usable condition. I’ve heard the quality isn’t quite like that anymore, so maybe I’ll just use & enjoy what I already have.

I work in finance and I just can't look at my handbags as investments. I buy things for my wardrobe to use, if I'm not going to use it, I don't want the clutter and I'd rather not get it. I kinda assume I'm going to loose money and I spend accordingly. Fantastic prompt!!!!

Definitely a lot of psychology going into our thought process in buying (for investment, for pleasure, feeling of safety (this is a thing!), for practicality, "retail therapy"). But as for if my handbags are worth zero in monetary terms? I would keep probably still keep most of them. They may be worth less or even zero in terms of monetary value over time, but that doesn't mean it has less or zero value to me - I bought them to enjoy them, not for what their resale value would be in the future. Very interesting question. I am careful sometimes with my purchases but sometimes I am impulsive due to the price increase. But whenever I purchase something, I see my self using it forever. And if I no longer able to use it because of the style, I give them to my relatives and friends.

I think bc I just love bags and started purchasing bc of the beauty and love instead of knowing that you could re-sell, I probably would just keep them (: I also don’t have an extensive collection as I’m still a student, but even the non-luxury items are ones that I’ve thought lengthy before purchasing and that’s just my personality. Currently, I love my small collection that I'd keep most of them even if they lose value in the future. I do agree with your point that even the most coveted brands can lose their values. For Hermes and Chanel, maybe not the brand value itself, but the most popular pieces will change in the future for sure. Already, aided by social media, the classic flaps are so ubiquitous and oversaturated in our mind. Soon, fashion will turn to fresher things.

I wouldn’t care because I have never resold any handbags. I normally just give them away to family if Im bored with them, which is very infrequent. I guess there are those out there that buy bags as an investment of sorts but that has never been my aim. I buy them because I think they are beautiful!

I only have 10 bags and I thought that’s enough but I always find myself want more. Recently I’ve been having random thoughts like sell most of them and keep only 3 and enjoy them. Collectibles are so tricky because anything can happen. I have always collected for the love of it. Never purchased a bag due to investment. But such a good topic of conversation.

I have only 2 luxury bags . I spent 4300$ on them. That blew my mind as I never spent so much money on handbags. For me luxury bags are not investments. They are life style assets.I use my luxury bags when I go to special occasions . I wear and enjoy them. I don’t plan to sell them. I made more money investing in stocks and real estate than bags. I would not buy more bags. Just a personal choice. I practice minimalism in my own way. Have a few nice quality items and enjoy . I am not worried if my bags get to zero as I dont plan to sell them. I spent 4000$ for my sheer joy of owning a luxury bags is the way I see it.

I only have three luxury bags and I bought them because I liked them, not because they're trendy or cool. I also don't buy with the expectation that I will be able to sell them in the future. So if suddenly there was no value at all in luxury bags, I'd be totally okay with it. I might buy one more bag an then stop, but I personally wouldn't be surprised if the luxury market as we know it today does fall out of favor.

Now I love admiring luxury bags but I could never justify spending that much money on a bag. Because at the end of the day they are just accessories not a necessity for me. I view all my bags as zero value, I have sold bags one out of all were a breakeven sell, I buy most bags all used. I all other bags I have sold at a lost. I sell at a loss to buy a new things so it's like 3 bags to 1 new one. So for me I use what I love. I happen to give them away to friends and family more than sell. I have 6 lux bags the rest contemporary.

Excellent question for personal introspection. As very evident with the abhorrent Balenciaga situation, it can very well happen and happen quickly. The prices on the pre-loved market already fluctuate with the economic cycles as do most other goods. If mine were worth $0 in a year, I would just keep things; I’m not a seller even though I need to be. Hold on to them and sell the ones I don’t love when market is back up. Wish I didn’t have so many in the first place. Poor impulse control!!

For me I would be content with only 1 bag, I don’t own any luxury bags and I can’t fuss life about not owning one. If it’s in the cards to own one some day, so it shall be, if not, my life won’t end. If you have luxury bag-enjoy them.

None of my luxury goods are popular ones, I bought items I really liked and use them all, some infrequently like scarves, but I knew that when purchasing. I’ve a small ‘collection’ of bags from luxury Houses that I use often so I don’t feel the need to buy many more at luxury prices. A lot of thought went into each purchase, none were impulsive, none are redundant. I’ve bought things quicker than intended to beat a price increase or in a vlog sale, but they were bags I’d had on my radar and knew I’d love. If they were worthless tomorrow I wouldn’t care in the slightest. If you are going to invest in a bag hoping for future monetary gain then you need to understand which bit of the investment is the monetary part… and it isn’t the bag. This is a risk we take when we invest with any Company and when we buy Chanel, Hermès, LV etc., we are investing in a Company, not in a bag. Say the bag cost $2,000 to manufacture - we then pay $8,000 and upwards for the House name and that’s where the ‘investment’ sits - in the name, not the bag. It takes years to build a good reputation that can come crashing down in only one day, as recently seen. Over saturation of the bag or brand can also be detrimental. In the UK, Burberry suffered a downturn in popularity for years after its iconic classic check was seen in less than desirable places, worn by less than desirable people, often faked. Chanel classic flap bags feel a bit like that to me now.

I am new to the designer handbag ownership but I am taking my time and choosing handbags that I love and know I would use. For me, I don’t plan on purchasing more than perhaps six/ seven max so for me I purchase because I like them so if I was told they would be worthless it wouldn’t matter. I would keep them . If they became worthless then hopefully they would be less expensive and allow me to purchase any others I would want..lol.

Great video I dont have many bags because I don't want to waste money at my age. Real wealth is careful and handbags are not that serious but property is.

I think Hermes birkin and Kelly & chanel classic flaps will always hold its value. It’s been shown to hold its value through the years. As for investments, I don’t think so necessarily. Even the classic flap or birkin , if you sold today, would lose $ unless you purchased it 10-20 years ago. Investments to me means in a few months to a year you’d already be seeing profit and keep seeing profit- like homes, luxury cars, stocks, etc. it’s great if bags holds value but I purchase because I like it.

Also remember everything on social media today is P&R reviews, assessments and influence. Meaning some study analyzing companies work in conjunction with merchants for the purpose to entice to get us to spend!

I approach a luxury bag as a piece of art: it’s subjective and expensive but if it sparks an immense joy - then I can justify this purchase (and of course I would keep it as a true work of art irregardless all the turbulent times).

I've been musing on this question a lot too! I think Chanel is particularly interesting...using their Chanel flap as an index, we have seen its price more than triple with the price increases since the pandemic. In my opinion, they are trying to, for one, squeeze the resale market massively. Separately, to your point on price increases, they may not seem so outrageous right now because of inflation but can brands turn around and 'come back' from that, I think not since it devalues the brand to existing customers. I agree with some of the comments below regarding disassociating design and quality from brand value if you can and truly purchase what holds this perceived value for you. A lot of food for thought...

I have seriously reduced my handbag purchases this year. The only new (non preloved) bag I purchased this year was an LV while I was in Italy - the Euro was crazy low compared to the USD so it was a no brainer for me as the bag was purchased at 2018 pricing. Personally, I feel that the price increases and access to certain bags has made it too annoying for me. So it's easier to just purchase preloved.

Oddly enough I have always been going through this thought process whenever I buy bags, I guess bcs I mostly examine bags from their shape/color/design and functionality. Even with my monogram bags, I see them as patterns and don't really care whether it's Coach/Gucci monogram, as long as it looks good

I was confronted with this when I sold almost my entire collection. I lost so much. It made me think long and hard before I buy another bag. I am currently regrowing my collection but I plan on only having maybe 5 or 6 bags total but I will make sure they are stay in my collection bags.

I bought my bags because I truly like them. Glad to have bought them before prices go up even higher but never had thoughts of selling them when i bought them. They were for my use, just like my jewelry. I'd rather give them to my loved ones if I get tired of them but no selling. So they were never investments for me.

Honestly I would not care that much, I appreciate the history of the brands and I bought my bags after a lot of thought, I would sell a few pieces that I don't reach for but it's a small percentage I bought my luxury items because I enjoy having them and wearing them, it gives me a sense of accomplishment, that I was able to buy them after saving for a long time

I just started my luxury bag journey earlier this year and and might have gone a bit mad buying whatever I could afford asap, but I have never intended to sell any of them and do not see them as investments... I see them the same way as I see my other collectable items that I own in my house - something visual to make me happy. I'd like to imagine if a world war started and things really got desperate, these bags would be worthless in a bartering community and couldn't hold anything useful while running from explosions. Luxury bags are definitely a status thing and the value society gives them will always change. This is why I wear mine out in the rain and don't really stress about accidentally scratching them against a wall. I buy what I can afford to lose.

I always thought they’d lose value as soon as I leave the store and use it, like anything else. I was surprised to learn people can make their money back and then some on worn stuff! I don’t know how long that will last with economic recession... but then again I was incredulous that some people (people already who are already comfortable I guess) found lock down lucrative whereas I may have made more as an essential worker than before, but I spent more than ever in my life (and not all on fun stuff!). so maybe it makes perfect sense that luxury goods resale will skyrocket if you are already doing well. I don't have any high end luxury handbags like Chanel, LV and Hermes. The bags I have are good but I bought them because I love them and were never bought to be an investment. I have however invested spare money in good quality diamond rings over the years and they bring me more joy than if I spent the money on luxury handbags.

I would keep and use my bags, I have sold a small number of bags over the years (as my lifestyle evolved), I have not made money back and selling is painful. I love the bags I have and I am aware they are not a financial investment, they are one of my passions! (I would consider selling if I were under financial duresse for any reason though).

I personally believe the value will go down for SEVERAL reasons. Wouldn't care either way, I'm enjoying what I have and I'm so HAPPY I didn't purchase for any investment value other than not ever having to repurchase. The Cost of these bags, the trends & the FOMO is controlled. People fall for it EVERYtime, I Refuse to be controlled by these businesses. I've mentioned this before here, please keep your eyes on your stock even. Not just Balenciaga, they ALL are the same Hermès & Chanel are NOT exempt. 💯🎀✨️

I wouldnt care much because if I wanted to preserve a piece to be sellable, I wouldn’t use it and that goes against my principles. I hate how some get away with selling pieces for a steep price just because they’re Chanel or Hermes even if they’re heavily used and damage.

I don’t really buy luxury items for investment so I’d still buy what I want and I’d use it as it should be. If I’ll make an investment I invest the money directly, like the example you gave which is stocks, and not with things that I’d use.

I don’t have the funds to buy many luxury bags. I only started buying a little over a year ago after 20 years of saving. I do not consider resale value in my buying decisions. And that’s mainly because I will not sell my items. I buy what makes me happy. When I am done using my items, depending on condition I will repurpose, discard, give away, and donate. I do that with clothes, shoes, contemporary bags, and many of the items I used to collect (fun hello kitty and tokidoki bags and tchotchkes). Most of my stuff ends up at Goodwill. I won’t do that to my luxury pieces. Everything luxury I buy are forever pieces. If I ever feel like I have too much I will consider giving away to friends. That hasn’t happened yet.

I actually decided to sell all my luxury handbags except for my first and favorite one (speedy 25 DE), specifically because of Balenciaga. After moving to Italy and trying some Italian brands that sell their handbags, handmade in Italy with the most beautiful quality leathers, for 200 euros or even less (Cuoieria Fiorentina, for example), I was already feeling a little silly for the price I have paid for lesser quality LV and Gucci bags, even Coach to be honest. I had already decided not to buy from luxury fashion houses anymore, but the whole Balenciaga thing made me decided to also sell the ones I have, just in case something like that happens to the brands of the handbags I own.

Just kept the one I love and sale don’t I love it. Right now, pur economy is no good. I rather have money my bank. I’m Contented my collections. Thank you ❤
