The old and modern foghorns at Lizard in Cornwall, the UKs most southerly point. The modern electric fog signal, located on the lantern balcony, beeps at just under 120 dB and can be heard at least 4 miles away. The old siren with the big horns are only used on special occasions, although I think it has been many years since they last worked. The lighthouse and old engine room is open to the public in the summer. Filmed on a very windy day. St Anthony's in Falmouth features briefly at the end.

For a while, I lived in Barnegat Light on the New Jersey coast, there was a fog horn at the end of the jetty near my house….I loved the sound at night.

I kindly ask, right at the time stamp of @0:30 seconds... the round glass area... why is that shaped like that with "diamonds"?... Wouldn't that be hard to manufacture, or is there a reason for the diamond shaped window panes? I know this may sound like a silly question. I do like the look of the diamond shaped window's rails or would those be called "MUNTINS"?.. I have spent a couple hours trying to find info upon this type of window architecture/ style/ design, call it what you will... either I am not smart enough, or I actually found something for once that the enterweb doesn't know, or nobody has ever thought that it would be of interest or worth while to post such a rare subject matter? Does anybody know if the glass is actually large rectangle panes that have been tempered on a buck of a particular curvature/radius and the diamond shape appearance is just trim, to make it look neat? It kinda looks like each diamond shaped pane is encased in its own trim, and each one relies on its neighboring unit, all the way around, from the bottom to the top, in efforts to be a strong structure.. I would or can assume, that this design would allow for a strong super structure, as per the task of handling the likes of crazy nasty winds. I would imagine, that it can handle a slight twisting action, a side to side trapezoidal leaning due from heavy gust winds in an infinite directional winds, yet, keep the roof in check, right where it is suppose to be? I am sorry, I realize this is like coming off strange, as the video is about the foghorn, but that lighthouse's window design is what caught my eye, hence, all of my silly questions. I also spent some time skimming through a few videos, and web pages and web doc's, that talk in wonder detail of the place and history and great stories, but nothing about the light house coppola super structure. I don't even know if that aspect of the light house can be even be called a coppola, I don't know, while also having the vintage portable homes, that erect in a few hours, called "YURTS", as per how the wall structure opens up and bends around the round shape of the small building or living quarters... Well, either way, Thank you for taking the time to upload the tiny video, where I have been inspired to look further into this subject matter. Dru

Hello Dru. The lantern glass is diamond like you say, slightly curved too and just under an inch thick. It is very specialist and I have no idea who manufactures it. You'll notice the same design all over the world and the glass is still made as glass still gets broken in storms (have a look at 'Wolf Rock in a storm'). There are spare glass pieces in The lanters were made of gunmetal I believe. Some of my video's (Happisburgh I think) has some view of the inside of the lantern and a closer look at the lattice/glass). It was designed like this to minimise any metalwork blocking of the light beam. Not so relevant these days but light power wasn't as powerful a few hundred years ago. It is also stronger than 'squares' (think triangles). Some lighthouses do have square panes but they tend to be land based with large, powerful lenses.

Where I live, there aren't any old horns anymore. We still have our air raid sirens, but they just stand their and rust. Now, our fog horns are mounted on buoys off of beaches.

The old ones are steam fog sirens- the whole thing is powered by steam, including the timing mechanism which times each of the blasts.

This is a fog siren with rotors in the horns to power the sound out. It rises up to its loudest like an electric siren. The more air is made the more the rotor spins or in this case discs with holes
