The fact that a 30 year old porsche can have this much life left after 400k is reason enough for me to buy one right now. But maybe one with SLIGHTLY less miles.. Side note, you won me over with the charlie brown grown-up voice right away. Here's your like lol

A cool effect of the wheels you don't notice while driving is at some speeds they appear to be standing still while moving. My early '85 has them. Seen another 944 one day with those wheels moving. Took double look.

Great video. Most Americans don’t understand how to drive a Porsche and consider them to be slow (particularly the “transaxle” cars). This is because American muscle cars have huge V8’s that deliver large amounts of torque for launching off the line and driving the 1/4 mile... it’s not about top speed which would be in the 125-135 mph range for a similar year V8, it’s all about stop light to stop light... and that is awesome and great fun. But, these cars (as you point out) are designed to be driven through windy turns and powered at speeds up to 140-160 mph, along straightaways... it’s not about the launch, it’s about the driving performance and handling... and as such, they are supposed to be driven in the 3-5k range on the tach... THAT is where they shine. Different horses for different courses. Understanding that makes all the difference. As far as your car goes, I love it. Keep the 16” Teledials... they’re uber cool, hard to find, and worth about 5x as much as the standard 15”. Your heater slider controls are upside down... the top one should point towards the windshield, and the lower one towards the footwell. The speaker roller switch is the front to rear fader and in the 80’s, this was usually not part of the stereo... if it’s acting like a volume control, check to see if your front (or rear) speakers are missing... or blown... or disconnected. There are repair kits for the clock that are fairly cheap that make them work properly... the additional function of the clock are that it’s a lap timer. The steering wheel looks similar to a Momo, which is a common replacement for the original. The armrest is supposed to contain the cassette insert... looks like they removed it from yours as you couldn’t fit anything else there with it in place. I like that stereo... as you say, it looks almost period correct... gonna look for one for mine! Cheers! And again, great video!

I would love a turbo someday, but I'm totally happy with my '83 N/A. Those windy canyon roads, though, with a turbo... I upgraded my steering wheel to a Momo Corsa. It's a bit smaller in diameter which helps with the lack of tilt... for my long legs it makes the right difference. Also, I love how the smaller wheel tightens the already excellent handling. I'm a fan of the stock phone dial rims, so I'd keep them and just get some good tires on them. I have aftermarket O/Z Racing Vegas, and I keep going back and forth on replacing them. If I did, phone dials would be at the top of the list. Just a great 80's look.

I recently acquired a 1986 944 Turbo as well. It only has 179k miles on it, but they were arguably harder miles as the car used to be a HDPE car. I got it cheap because although it does run, the engine has a bad case of rod knock and some track rash. So I bought a good used short block for it and I'm in the process of swapping the engine with help of a friend. Mine also has phone dial wheels, which I think are classic Porsche and I wouldn't replace them for anything. Good luck with the car -- glad I found your channel!

I have one 20 years ! She won't explode - no chance as long as you look after the timing belts and services properly - yours has the early offset wheels - keep em ! I just love the way they sound and handle ! I was offered big money for mine - I declined as the car is just part of the family now and is irreplaceable! That car of yours gives me so much confidence - a 944 Turbo with very low miles is twice as likely to break down - well done ! Great review and keep her going !

1. The center console was for cassettes, you're missing the plastic dividers. 2. If you don't like the original wheel find an airbag wheel off a later 944 turbo. Stock is always best. 3. Remove that exhaust and go back to stock 4. Your car is an 86 model year so you can fit fuchs wheels on it, those are best, nothing aftermarket. I would gently start restoring that car. Steering rack, paint, put it back to stock. This is from an era when German cars were very overbuilt. These 944's are extremely durable. It will only break if you let it. Stay on-top the maintenance and it will run forever.

beautiful! I was a 70s kid and I've always coveted the 944. my mom's bf let me use his black non-turbo for my 16th birthday present. I used it to go into a drive-thru bank line that had a teller I'd had a crush on since I was 13----she had no idea who I was because I was some dumb kid in the passenger seat of my mom's Volvo 244---and I'm convinced that the Porsche is the reason a) she said yes and b) I got a kiss at the end of the night. (also got pulled over by the cops because I was driving so far UNDER the speed limit, being so afraid of wrecking it, that he thought I was drunk.). anyway, point is: beautiful 951. the aftermarket headlamps are so darkly glistening that make the front of the car look like a manga character who is about to cry. in a good way. and how bad is the cracking on the top of the dash? can we see? and how much is putting down with its few mods that you hint at?

My gf as a 2003 Ford Focus se wagon thats still running great at 320,000 miles....we bought it with 150,000 on it and it looked almost new at the time...she has put the rest on and uses it daily...Cant say enough about using full synthetic in cars you want to keep...hers does Not burn oil and runs smooth and tight...that many miles on urs ,considering that sports cars have a tougher life, is remarkable!

Not as agile as an MX-5 or a Boxster- but two of the best things about the 944 I found from owning my S2 for 24 years now is 1) Fuel economy and 2) Luggage carrying capacity- I have actually done gigs using my 944 to move my amp and guitars, monitor and mike stands etc. Try that inn a Boxter or MX-5.

Steering Wheel: think about replacing it with the wheel from the 911 Turbo, known as the 930. My '87 Carrera has the same steering wheel as your 951, I never liked it, and upgrading the wheel added at least 10 hp! Even if it didn't (it didn't) the steering wheel and the seats are the two things you are touching every second you're in the car. Life with a wheel you don't like is not living your best life. My 944 is an S2 with airbags, so I haven't done the same there, but there seems to be some forum posts about doing it on non-airbag 944s. The wheels are a little pricey at about $500, and you generally are thoughtful about dropping too much on a VERY high mileage car. But for others, especially with lower mileage cars you're going to drive until you die, the upgrade might be worth thinking about.

Love the production value of your videos. I'd like to see another "behind-the-scenes" video how you setup the shots. How you got the cool overhead shot in the twisties where you added the Outrun effect would be a cool one. Vote to keep the phone dials, I think all my favourite childhood cars had some type of phone dial pattern rims. Definitely suits the 80's aesthetic you were pointing out in the video! Love the content, please keep it up!

The 944 has to be the most comfortable sports car to drive long distance. I took my dad’s car on a 4 hr. Trip years ago from his home to mine so I could help him sell it.... and the turbo failed before I got home....BUT, man was I impressed with how it drove. Didn’t beat me up at all. I once drove a NA Miata that was nearly new at the time on a 2 hr. Round trip. I didn’t want to get back in it to make the return journey home. A 944, you could drive all day and still be able to walk afterwards. Your car sounds great! I’m guessing exhaust was one of the upgrades. I didn’t used to like the later tear drop outside mirrors instead of the OE flag style, but they really work on your car. Updates it just a little. I love that it is white with brown interior rather that Guards red or black. Oh, keep the phone dials. I totally approve of all of your mostly “rare and no one cares” vehicles. Great video. Thank you.

I drove one of the first 944Ts in the country, new, when my cousin sold them new. It was incredible then, and they remain increible now. The fixes your car needs are relatively easy and, in Porsche terms, cheap. Fix the known weak area sand it will run forever more. Your car, btw, has the very nice and non-standard aero mirrors swapped on, which came out on the 968.

About the parking brake tripping effect, the car just doesn't want the driver to leave. 💜 Hope the wheels are kept. Their distinct design is expected & it would seem as something is missing otherwise. Great radio. Unless it was mentioned, it definitely looks correct. Unfortunately it's "the more original the better" with me.😒 I would go back to the original steering wheel. But at least nothing looks stupid in the interior, like was mentioned.

Should you buy it...? haha! Yes! I felt that same way about the Corrado G60 cars.

Outstanding video! As an owner of a 1990 944 cabriolet, I always appreciate seeing someone express “944 love”. Re: the phone dial wheels, I prefer the simplicity of (and the ease of cleaning) my original D90s. Re: your steering wheel, the world is your oyster....as I believe your car is pre-airbag (per the ugly one you show, that I have). I love the 968 side mirrors that you (or a previous owner) replaced the “flag” rectangle versions....I am surprised they didn’t replace your door handles with the smoother 968 versions. I loved your car’s sound (I have to believe that the exhaust system was replaced or modified)....but what really jumped out at me were your LED headlights. I would love to know what brand or where you got those....to replace my dismally dim originals! Once again, Bravo-Zulu on an outstanding and fun (and very professionally produced) video!

Thanks for the kind words! :) Yep previous owner replaced the mirrors. Still not sure which ones I like better. :) I'm not sure of the headlights, I'll look into it. Previous owner did that upgrade too! Thanks for watching!

I would think that it must be a joy to drive or you wouldn't own it with that kind of mileage! Of course if it was annoying or a pain to drive, you would be crazy to continue to own it. Either crazy, or just very emotionally attached to it, that is. I agree with the styling cues, especially the "flared" or "coke bottle" sides, which is why I liked my '86 Mercury Capri better than the '86 Mustang. The "Telephone Dial" wheels are also similar to the idea of the Mustang and H.O. Capri of the day, though it harkens back to the steel multi-hole wheels on the '64 Porsche 904GTS!

The rims are ok but the 1989-90 rims are cleaner (nicer in my opinion) as I have an 1987 944 Turbo with the same rotary rims. If you want to stick to originals, stay with the rotary rims. Btw, are your side mirrors original? Mine are rectangular shaped. As for your steering wheel, it is ugly. Oddly mine came with dual air bags and looks “modern”. I like your stereo. Does not look out of place. The Blaupunkt sucks. Btw, your center console is shallow because it’s originally a cassette tray holder.

How about 996 Turbo Wheels? They Look amazing on the 944
@edwardrogers2289

They look really good on a normal 944, but the turbo has a different offset and they don't fit without really big spacers. I have a 86 na with them and tried them on my 87 turbo, really hoped they would work, but I don't like huge spacers. I had to use 2-1/2" in the back...
