The big difference between the first two and the last one is that the first two are meant for defending against blunt for trauma (crashes, hits etc) while the vietnam helmet is made to not let bullets (mainly shrapnel) through. If you have a headache afterwards, it's a side effect of still being alive.

I was thinking that too. I was also thinking, a straight shot from maybe 15 to 20 feet away? Completely ideal conditions. More likely you'd get a glancing blow and all three helmets would protect from that as the arrow would glace off. Would I still prefer the military helmet? Absolutely.

you'd probably have a bigger headache with the army helmet, all the force went into one spot and would come out on the other side. With the motorcycle helmet taking the arrow, a bit more of the force would've dispersed through the helmet. Both would likely lead to a concussion however

Makes sense. The first two are designed to prevent concussive forces/blunt force trauma. You're getting hit by someone's fist, or body up to asphalt or metal plates from a car. The Vietnam helmet is designed to stop projectiles like bullets. It's not meant to protect by crumpling or from blunt force. It's there to stop projectiles. Bullets. A lot of force concentrated on a small area.

All these people trying to tell you it's not designed to stop bullets but ignoring the fact the M1 helmet could withstand an ACP.45 at point blank range, and that the US Army Research Office deduced that more than half of the bullets that hit them in combat failed to penetrate the helmet. Also not sure why old mate is talking about kevlar helmets when the M1 helmets were manalloy.

My great uncle was 82nd airborne in WWII he told a story of a machine gun opening fire behind his men. The first round struck his BAR man in the neck and killed him. Another round struck the back of my uncles helmet slid up over and fell in his hand. He kept it in his pocket to remind himself of how close he came to death that day. So I believe a military helmet has the best chance of saving your life.

@@AlTiri-rd7ly no, anti-bullet was not a part of the design decision. They weren't rated for it. If it happened you were lucky and it was likely due to being kind of far out. It wasn't until around the 80s that we started considering our helmets bullet resistant. Before that they were always designed for shrapnel. Even with the ACH in 2006 when I was deployed we were told not to expect our helmet to save us from an AK round. The shape is designed to deflect SHRAPNEL

@@CubeInspector eh quite a few old steel pots are very much capable of stopping handgun rounds but you aren't going to encounter those in the field (refer to mikeB and oxide ballistic testing) Also some ops-core fast helmets and helmet plates can stop 7.62x39 (don't remember the exact velocity and bullet design but refer to oxide fast sf and xr ballistic test) but the deformation will most likely kill you (slaap plate can stop a 7.62x39 MSC)

Football and bike helmets are specialized against blunt trauma, they try to spread the energy to the whole helmet and avoid it going to the head, that’s why they also break when being hit really hard, so they are not really suitable against any arrows or gun shots, because it’s one small point that has impact with a lot of energy

some people get that motorcycle helmet is for you to survive a fall from bike or a smaller crash, but some people think that motorcycle helmet is against crashes, falls and occasional bow shots to the head... Next time try the 50.bmg against vietnam helmet and it will have same effect as those 2 other helmets... or even better idea, take vietnam helmet into motorcycle crashes and see how it helped you... only fair right?

Modern day helmets arent designed to stop bullets. They're designed to redirect them. I had a composites manufacturing class back in university and some guy brought his helmet or something from one of his tours where he got hit by some kind of rifle round and you could see the way it changed the bullets trajectory cause it hit around the forhead and you could see the bullet change directions by how the fibers got blown out

Good point… it couldn’t hurt but It also would be pretty difficult for it to do a perfect 180 and return to the exact vector it came from … it’s not a bullet, linear shape of thr arrow combined with the feathers provide enough stabilization that it’s unlikely for it to even return to the same hemisphere it came from relative to the target… much more likely for it to be redirected in the same direction it was already traveling but with a different angle

That Vietnam era US M1 Helmet did exactly as it was designed to do! Army helmets back then werent designed to be bulletproof, but shrapnel proof! The idea was that if a nearby explosion (grenade, artillery, etc) went off, a ducking soldier would be more survivable if their helmet could deflect incoming shrapnel instead of trying to absorb an impact like a bike helmet would. Military helmets had that design feature in mind since at least WW1, and it had saved many, many lives since then. Modern helmets are designed not only to deflect but also to absorb the energy of a projectile, with most helmets being rated against pistol rounds and some even being able to stop large rifle calibers!
