I totally disagree. Looking at a dude onstage who looks like he mowed my lawn is pretty boring, vs acts that are VISUALLY FUN TOO, from Gwar to The Osmond Brothers to Jimmy Page in his dragon suits! IF YOU ARE GETTING UP ON A STAGE...you are asking us to LOOK AT YOU. Okay, well what are you VISUALLY DOING that's worth me looking? It's RUDE to get onstage dressed boring.

This was my shit in 1992. I listened to the cassette on constant repeat for weeks when it came out. I was 16 at the time and semi-homeless, crashing at various houses of skater friends of mine whose parents would tolerate me. There was this skater kid, everyone called him Jumbo, he was a legit midget. Not a dwarf like you see in movies, but a miniature person- normal proportions but just tiny. At 16 he was the size of a 9/10 year old kid and as far as I know, he never grew any bigger. A bunch of us fuckups and homeless/runaway punks and skaters would crash at his place, where he lived with his dad who was schizophrenic or something. He was on medication and usually cool, but every other week or so he would go off his meds, flip out and kick everyone out of the house with no notice and we would all have to scramble to find somewhere else to sleep for awhile. The house was a sparsely furnished mess. Jumbo's room had a mattress on the floor and nothing else. We all slept on the floor except for Jumbo, who got the mattress of course. The walls were covered in graffiti and had a bunch of holes punched through them. It would seem pretty rough to most people but it was paradise for us. So anyways, Helmet's album Meantime came out that summer in 1992 when I was staying off and on at Jumbo's and I listened to the cassette so much while staying there that anytime I hear any of the songs from that album they immediately transport me back to that time and place.

True, but you came close to infringing on my rights to the word "jackassery", which is how I describe so many drivers here in SoCal. When it rains they tend to hit the streets and put a serious damper on my commute forcing me to substitute my Z28 for my ZX6R, and makes waves that jet skiers dream about, myself included. My SeaDoo XP is like the little fork lift from the movie Cars. Regardless what machine I'm on this song plays on repeat.

Just a quick note for the younger fans of this band: It's really kind of crazy for the older people like me who grew up in this era to hear this song again. Youngsters may not know but when it came out Helmet had generated SO much buzz! MTV and other various music-centered magazines like Rolling Stone and Spin had anointed them as the band to change music and talked about them like they were the 2nd coming of Jesus. This band was like a cornered rabid animal with expectations from their record label and the music scene in general that was practically unbelievable. The bar was set so high they could never live up to the hype. I specifically remember someone saying, "Helmet is the next big thing, the next Nirvana". Note 4/1/2023 - I just want to stress that the comparisons I make between Helmet and Nirvana is mostly to do with record company sales projections and not which band is subjectively "better" than the other. Helmet and Nirvana are/were VERY different bands sonically. Nirvana could never have been as percussively heavy and occasionally brutal as helmet, and helmet was never going to write lyrics as silky-clever as Cobain.
