“The fight against cancer is a tough and painful one. More so for a single elderly lady who has neither relatives to support her nor finances at her disposal. Frail, old and battling cervical cancer, 50-year-old Asha Devi was evicted from her one room accommodation, the only thing keeping her safe from the bitter winters of Uttrakhand. The landlord’s reason to ask her to leave was that he did not want the other tenants to get cancer.
“With neither relatives to support her nor money to find a refuge, Asha Devi was in a bad state. Had a team of medicos from Ganga Prem Hospice not rescued her, she would have suffered painfully,” says Dr AK Dewan noted oncologist and founder of Shradha Cancer Care Trust which runs the hospice for cancer patients at Rishikesh.
Ganga Prem Hospice has eased the suffering of more than 16,000 cancer patients from underprivileged backgrounds, most of whom had been abandoned by their families due to the expense of treating their illness.
