Please make another/updated part to this. My dog freaks out and barks like crazy when people walk by/when we are in a drive through/a motorcycle drives by. We don’t get it at all. We have had him since he was a puppy and have no clue why he is so reactive in the car.

I love your videos, your training style is "a matter a fact and consistancy" that's how I teach. I groomed dogs for 50 yrs I never had any trouble with behavior I even would go pick up and delivery for my elderly customers. Sometimes the dogs wanted to ride on my lap I would say no! Get in the back or put them in a kennel. Every evening I look forward to your videos I'm so happy I found you.

I got transport boxes for my 2 dogs and it was the worthiest purchase ever. I got the dogs used to the boxes at home and slowly introduced them on our trips, in the beginning short distances and gradually increasing the time spent in them. Now, they are quietly travelling even for 3 hours and it's saver for everyone.

I'm so happy I came across this. My dog barks non stop in the car. He's a rescue so I didn't get a chance to train young. Not saying I would be any good. Didn't know most of this but I'm definitely going to give it a try! I was told to try a dog spray which I didn't really like. It doesn't really work anyways. Again thank you for this video!

I use a dog seat belt. It has a halter type device that protects the dog, and this in turn clips to a seat belt. The dog can sit up or lay down, but stays in its seat. No getting on the floor or crawling over its neighbor. I put 2 bouncy, happy, un-neutered, golden retriever males in the back seat of my camry and never have any problems. BONUS, they are safe in an accident. I bought the petsafe brand.

Unfortunately mine doesn’t care how much correction she gets! I can be at a light, reach around and grab her collar and jerk her back in the middle and as soon as I let go she’s back, barking like she wants to kill whatever she’s reacting to.I can tell her to sit and she half ass sits for about 2 seconds. I have her on a harness with a around the neck cushion seat belt attached to her back. I’ve got it as tight as it will go. I cannot fit a kennel in the car and there is no way I can get a different vehicle at this time. She’s a 3 yr old Blk/wht Aussie. High energy/ high drive. She’s pretty good most of the time at home. I have a connective tissue disease and any pilling or pushing will cause severe pain for days. I had a trainer tell me to get her a soft sided kennel but I measured and it won’t fit. She’s 62 lbs. I haven’t given her something to eat and will try that but I doubt she’ll care. What else can I do?

I stopped my dogs barking in the house and never had a problem in any car. Never had to feed them. All I say is Ah! at the slightest squeak and it just stopes. Never needed a car guard create etc. Teach your dogs how to behave in a house and they are the same everywhere else. It just like teaching good manors, once the children or dogs have them you dont have to teach them it for different situations.

When I started riding the car with my dog, I went heavy on the treats. I'd tell him to sit in the back while I geave treats after treats, before I even start the engine. Then, on the drive, I would treat him sporadically while he was good; if he got agitated I would tell him to sit and then treat. (Once I gave him a dry cattle ear that he ate during the entire ride, which was great). I also increased the duration of the rides, from 15 min up to 60 in the spam of a week. He is now very good in the car, and I don't use any treats anymore. Also, if you are not using a crate, use a harness and a seatbelt leash for your dog. It is just way safer for the dog and the driver.

I'm having trouble with my dog in the car. He used to ride calm and quite but suddenly he started to get too excited and whiny on all rides after some minutes in the car. It's pure excitement because he thinks we are going to somewhere fun (mountain walks, etc.). He rides secured with a harness that let's the seatbelt go through it, so he is not moving much. I've tried everything and it doesn't work, I don't know what to try anymore and it makes trips very annoying. It can be a 10min or more than 1h long trip and he doesn't stop whinning.

My cattle dog is not camera shy like Vivian. She would gladly perform her reactive dog drama under any circumstances. I do crate her, but she has good vision and intense concentration, and watches thru the ventilation holes for signs of anything barkable -- vehicles, people, animals, even construction/traffic variations -- nothing gets past her. She laughs off bark collars. E-collars on the highest setting have no effect. Kongs are less attractive than barking. When I cover the ventilation holes with a blanket, she works intently to grab a section of the fabric with her teeth and pull it into the crate where she shreds it. This does have the benefit of keeping her partially quiet while she does it, but she can destroy an entire comforter within 2 weeks so it gets expensive, plus the fabric confetti flies out my car door whenever it's opened.

I hear you! We began crating our extremely exuberant lab in our small suv when she was 8 weeks old. She’s 9 months now, and 2 weeks ago, on a whim, I bought a rear seat cover, put her in, told her in my stern “teacher voice” to sit down. Of course, she tried to come up front, but redirected her by waving a piece of mail, and she’s been great. My family thinks she’s just happy not having to be crated lol

My dog is a hard case and very reactive to car rides. I tried your method with the leash and dog bed in the back but it still didn't work and I think he would go crazy in a crate. I gave him hemp oil treats before placing him in the car. After taking him for a walk, I parked my car in a shopping center, music playing, and sat there with him in back. I constantly had to correct my dog when someone walk by. I also used his toy to redirect him. When he didn't sound off, I would toss him a treat and say, "Good Quiet." It is finally working, so I am going to hang out with him in the parking lot while the weather is still cold. I want to desensitize him with people walking by. The ultimate test will be when I am not in the car with him.

Yep. I've heard about a Dobie lying curled in the front seat, no seat belt ... pick-up going at only 30mph ... collision happens ... dog hits the dash ... dog's neck broken and he dies instantly without a mark on him. Absolutely heart-breaking for the owner. The Blue Cross charity advises as follows: "Dogs in cars UK law The Highway Code requires dogs (and other animals) to be ‘suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly’ (rule 57). While breaking the Highway Code is not an offence in itself, allowing a dog to distract you could be taken into account in the event of an accident. Bear in mind that in a crash, an unsecured dog will be thrown forward with significant force. This could result in your pet being injured or worse and, depending on the size of your dog, could also injure or kill the driver or passengers."

Hi Joel, I would love to see a video on traffic reactivity whilst walking. We have a 9 month old Dutch x Belgian Shepherd who has started a very upsetting habit of lunging at the traffic (sometimes frothing at the mouth) & biting whatever is near her mouth (tender parts of my body!) and drawing blood. This has to stop! and I am at a loss of what to do. She has been doing marvelously since we've had her from 8 weeks old and began watching your videos, this one has thrown us and after this mornings walk and injuries I now am starting to doubt my abilities on this behaviour. At first I was under the assumption it was excitement. But perhaps it's fear? Loving your videos, and your stuffed Kongs have been a god send!

They can see the road, which helps with their state of mind. So with me, it's not about letting the dog do what it wants, it's about preferring that to the back seat. Car reactive dogs affect the dogs on the sidewalks. I prefer crates for one or two border collies in a small hatchback. The slobber and fur is ridiculous. There is better things to do for your family, friends, and dogs than being injured or killed. The time cleaning up for passengers could be used with other things.

Any advice on how to train him out of this in a way that saves my hearing and doesn’t mean sitting there while he makes my ears ring?

Hi Joel, I have a friend who has a relative 114 pound lab that she allows to roam the car continually. I have given suggestions but the friend always comes up with excuses of why it doesn’t work. I’m going to suggest the leash and frozen Kong. Will the friend follow through, most likely not but I will try. Keep up the good work.

@Flippokid 2 жыл бұрын
People that have excuses for everything usually don't want to follow through with solutions. A good solution for roaming is braking. Tell your friend to drive around in quiet neighborhoods, 15 zones, and when it's safe and the dog starts to roam, brake. Not too hard, just enough to make it lose balance and force it to readjust. Then keep on doing that whenever the dog gets up, and also when the dog is sitting nicely. They will experience that when they sit or lie down, they don't lose balance. That will become their preferred state.

I have a severely over reactive dog when he is in my truck. He is harnessed so he can move side to side but not enter front seat. The major problem is , my dog is deaf. I have control of him outside of my truck. I love my dog but don't look forward to road trips. I have a headache from his constant barking. Indeed some guidance.

My 1 year old 40kg dog wants to play with every single dog we meet on the walk. He is really obedient until we see another dog. he loses his mind. I am always redirect him and eventually get his attention but will he ever be able to go off leash? He has a great recall when not distracted. I really like your videos they have helped me a lot especially at loose leash walking

A 1 year old large breed dog still has puppy brain. They grow so fast physically but it takes longer for them to mature mentally. There is a big difference between one year and two as to their gaining a more mature behavior. It sounds like you are on a good and successful track, just be patient and it will pay off!😊

Joel, I HIGHLY suggest you restrain the dogs you put in your car. That way in an accident they won't go flying around the car, hurting you, themselves, and/or any other passengers. I always have my dog in a harness with a seatbelt through the harness handle. If I don't have that option I at least tie her leash to something! I love your no-nonsense attitude with dog training by the way. Your videos have been very helpful to me! The dog being unrestrained in the car was just something that concerned me.

My dogs were in an accident with my husband in the car, and they are 10 pound Italian Greyhounds. As you said, if they had not been restrained, they would have flown around and probably would have died. Instead they just had bruising around the chest area since I use Roman harnesses with a clip into the seat belt lock. And if they had been on just collars, their necks would have been broken.

I am very surprised Joel doesn't have his dog secure . Very surprised. Even a dog who is well-behaved & always lies still could be seriously hurt if you had to suddenly slam on the brakes or were in an accident. I always say "Anyone...human , dog or cat....who rides in our car is seatbelted, tethered or in a carrier." Our dog wears a harness which has a tether from it to the seatbelt buckle. Can't tell you how many times she's been spared from being thrown to the floor when I've had to suddenly apply the brakes.

It sounds like good advice but the dog wasnt being reactive at all [maybe he just knows not to mess with you]. A more reactive dog with more happening for it to react to would be better. The dog was so good it never needed correction so i never saw how well it worked.....maybe if you borrowed my rescue dog ......he reacts to everything he sees.......a nightmare in the car or on the beach......i have a lot of work to do!....Thanks for the theory lesson

dogs are not allowed to hang loose in the car in the UK (anymore) ... in the past have trained dogs to the boot which is the coldest area in the car in the summer ... it also helps with car sickness - current pup has a seat belt but only coz I haven't got a suitable boot tidy for him to sit in ... never had a dog with reactivity in the car unless you call puking reactivity ... lol

@annmeacham5643
@annmeacham5643 2 жыл бұрын
We would feed young horses in our horse trailer so they would be fine with it. Try giving all meals next to the car, gradually moving closer and then finally in the car. Next step would be desensitizing to doors being closed, car turning on, then short trips. Any idea why dog is so scared? Most dogs love car rides.

My three year old dog still throws up, be it in the crate in the boot, in the boot without a crate, with or without a harness and attached to seatbelt buckle, even in the foot space of the front passenger seat with me. Sorry Joel, but this whole situation seems quite risky and potentially dangerous to me. What happens if you have to hit the brake pedal hard out of a sudden? Especially if the dog is in a standing position. What happens if the dog gets "crazy" while you are in a difficult driving situation that requires all of your attention? Maybe having the leash strapped on a stable point would be better, both for the dog and the driver. Noone wants to get involved in an accident, but being proactive doesn't hurt.

Ok i agree with getting them calm before they get in the car and using a chew for giving them something positive to do. But, this is the first time I have disagreed with you. And so I have to say it... You are telling everyone "this is what I do" but then say "you shouldn't do it like this because it's dangerous" 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ BETTER IDEA...if you don't want to use a crate is to get a doggy seatbelt! They make them in all types. But if you don't or can't get a seatbelt for them then the easiest way to secure them is to tie the leash to the headrest so they only have enough leash to lie down. This will prevent them from being able to roam around the car or jumping into the front and possibly your lap, causing a wreck.

@angelamatteo2255
@angelamatteo2255 2 жыл бұрын
@@iwallhausser8870 you're correct...But in securing the dog in one place with some sort of tether / seatbelt, it does the same thing he's trying to do while driving with one hand and still trying to keep eyes on the road. You'd still give the dog a nice chewy or fav toy to give them something to do other than the reactive behavior. With the tether or seatbelt, the one handed driving while working the leash is not necessary. But it IS safer!
@sairhug

I wouldn't risk a tether around the neck - car harness all the way. Wouldn't want my dog's head ripped off in a collision. Rule of thumb: how does a 7 year old kid travel in a car? S/he's strapped in - it makes sense.

Hi,my dog loves riding in the car.he is either in the front,or in the back in a transport box,but he is always fastend with a seatbelt on his harness. He goes nuts,when we stop and people go by. He can't contain himself,he is so excited he starts barking (on a car park,at a shop etc).when we are at home it's even worse.during the drive he keeps watching where we're going and what's outside,but if we drive for more than 20min he lies done and rests until we stop.I get him to stop barking much quicker now, and i don't use the ear plugs when we stop any longer ,but it's still very annoying... I make him lie down and become calm before allowing him to get out of the car.when he won't stop barking (mostly when we're home), I leave and he stays in the car.he is not leaving the car in barking mode. thanks for your suggestion that he does not have to protect the car or watch what's going on.so I'll make him lie down from the beginning next time maybe that does the trick.we'll see.
