Some good, thoughtful tips here. One thing I would add which I find to be of paramount importance: record yourself and listen back. It's amazing how differently we often hear ourselves in real time vs during playback.

Great advice again Jeremy. I find counting in your head helps when you don't have a reference beat, but the major cause of speeding up for me is insecurity and insufficient practice!

Nice! Good point. It's so easy to be insecure without the metronome, so it helps to "test" yourself and make sure you're on the right track. I can just hope to get better and better each time I practice.

I've got a big problem if anyone has any suggestions how to solve. i'm always a 32nd - 16th note before the beat. the pulse is in tact. doesnt matter the rhythm i play but when i turn on metronome and record myself in MIDI i can see that i press each key a 16th note before where the actual downbeat is. It's like my brain is anticipating where the click is and to press the key before i hear it. I have absolutely no clue how to deal with this.. been playing for years now (practiced with metronome on 2 and 4 even 1 click for a bar and was messing around with downbeats, also can play offbeats, triplets, 16th notes 16th note triplets, syncopations etc...Seems like my brain is just wired with bad timing. dunno how to fix something as essential as this after 8years of playing. Been trying just to hit the quarter notes for now but it seems it doesnt matter if i play something complex or something as simple as 4 quarter notes in a bar.

I'm not sure I can "diagnose" or "fix" this here without hearing you. Are you sure there's not a delay in your MIDI set up? If you'd like to do a lesson, I can try to help you - there's a link for you to sign up for a time in the KZfaq description.

@@JeremySiskind thank you for replying. It is the opposite of delay. daw latency is around 15ms so that shouldn't be a problem. I've been trying to fix it now doing day by day excercises recording my self in slower tempos and just doing quarter and 8th notes trying to feel where the actual click is. I've got a bunch of videos on my channel of me playing piano. thx again.
