I should have explained the link between hairballs and asthma better in the video: When cats are having an asthma attack they groom themselves to soothe themselves (as it's distressing) and sucknin air and this makes them swallow hair. Then they throw it up.

Is asthma accompanied by excess phlegm? Our 18-year-old cat often coughs like this and we can hear that he has phlegm. There was an x-ray and the vet said the lungs were clear
@HelpfulVancouverVet

@MonikaBury it can be. Radiographic changes can be subtle if patient not actively symptomatic, or your cat may have a different problem.

My kitty soulmate Boris developed asthma when he was 8 months old. He had very frequent attacks. He was on prednisolone for most of his 17 years of life. He wouldn't tolerate the inhaler with the Skylab adapter (that's what my boyfriend called it) but he did very well on the prednisolone. He did still have attacks from time to time and they scared the daylights out of me. I always thought he was in danger of suffocating. Boris has been gone for 6 years now but I still use his picture for my profile.

As a person who was on prednisone foe many years I will say it's a very good medication but there are side effects even at lower sustained dosages. Appetite changes, thinning of skin and bruising more easily when bumped are a few. It also slows the healing process when cut or bruised.
@liorahgolomb7405
@liorahgolomb7405 4 ай бұрын
@@sabinekoch3448it's true that the prednisolone can have undesirable side effects. Boris had to be monitored pretty closely for his kidney functions especially. But for some reason he did well on it. He was pretty healthy otherwise until his last year. And he also had a thickening of one of the walls in his heart.

I lost my 17 yr old MC boy last June. I noticed he had a dry cough for a few days. Then he started to walk a ways and then struggle to breath like he was panting. I immediately called my vet and she gave me the number to the weekend vet. After taking X-rays he was diagnosed with lymphoma. An enlarged lymph behind his lung was obstructing his breathing. I sure do miss the big guy. Now I have 2 9 month old heathens. I mean boys.😊 I rescued them a month after my loss. They are FeLV brothers. My thumb nail is of them. I think they are handsome boys.

Nice informative video! My cat was diagnosed in 2011 and back then I had to get most of my information from a very dedicated Yahoo group and personal websites, it's nice to see more awareness these days. He lived a long 18 years- 12 years after his asthma was diagnosed. I have a video of an example of his coughing on my channel, too, in hopes that more people can recognize the symptoms and treat their kitties so they too can live long and happy lives 😊

Very useful information. Had to say goodbye to my 17yo cat a few days ago due to breathing problems when lying down. His coughing proved to be heart failure for which he was prescribed Furosemide for over a year to help clear his lungs of fluid, but gentle squishing also helped, and I also had the idea of spraying occasional bursts of Salbutamol into the air. An AeroKat might have helped to make this more effective, so I'll place this comment in memory of Oddsy the White Cat.

Doctor, thank you so much for this video. Your description and video example of a cat asthma attack made me realize my cat likely has the same. My dear girl Scilla has been coughing near-daily since I got her nearly three years ago. She's feral so building her trust has been a slow and gradual process, and it's only been a year since I've been able to crate her and bring her to a vet. On her first vet visit I brought up her cough, but the vet blew me off, saying it was nothing. In the time since her last vet visit (less than a year) she's started coughing up hairballs, and lately it's been about twice a week. I feel horribly that she's been suffering for so long under my watch, but I'm glad you've made this video so that I know to take her to a vet asap. Thank you, I hope her health improves. She's so dear to my heart.

Excellent information. Our 12-year-old cat Zoe has lived with us as a semi-feral all her life. She has never let my husband near her and minimally tolerates me petting her at times. Even something such as a flea treatment sends her into hiding for days (and I didn’t even get to do the treatment!) I’m certain she has asthma, sometimes having multiple events in a day. Oddly enough, she almost never has fur balls, but does vomit rather frequently if she snags one of the other cats’ food or eats too fast. We are experienced cat people, always having multiple cats and executing all sorts of medical procedures and care for them. Sadly, Zoe would never allow herself to be caught and treated. My philosophy has always been that my 90+ pounds can take on a 10-15 pound cat and win. Zoe is my exception. I wish all your other viewers greater success with their kitties with asthma.

So you have a Scarf and Barf kitty too! Mine was dumped by her owners outdoors and she is now strictly indoor cat with the best food I can give her. But the cough does sound just like that video you showed. I will definitely bring this up with my vet! Edit: I have a dental appointment already scheduled for him as he has had gingivitis despite daily brushing - I will DEFINITELY mention the cough at that appointment, I had no idea there was a link between asthma and gum disease. Thank you so much for this information!

My cat cough like that all his life. Vet said his lung sounds fine and the coughing happens once in a while so probably just periodic allergens since he doesn’t have hairballs. He is currently dying from congested heart failure. The coughing was his way of clearing fluid from his lungs. X ray would have helped pick it up earlier. Ask for that x ray!!

Re: autoimmune disorders ... humans with autoimmune disorders are predisposed to multiple AI disorders, so it makes sense that animals are too. I have multiple problems, all inflammatory in nature - arthritis, sarcoidosis in my lungs, prolactinoma (pituitary tumor), stomach problems, etc etc! One of my cats has always had the exact symptoms you're describing and we always put it down to allergies as we live in a very dusty old house. But she does throw up - she's a Cornish Rex so she doesn't exactly have any hair to have hairballs, it's just a little bit of froth. Thing is... when I had sarcoidosis, I would cough so hard I threw up, and I've always thought it was the same thing for my kitty. The problem I have now is that she's 14.5 and I really don't want to send her for procedures that need anaesthetic unless it's a desperate situation. Is there any other diagnostic tool that can establish likely asthma rather than just a dust allergy? I don't want to let her suffer any more than she has to, but I also a) can't afford a huge amount of vet bills, so I have to select what diagnostics and treatments carefully with our vet, and b) don't want to put her through any more anaesthetic than she needs to. Honestly, the responsibility of cat ownership is hard at times - I have 3 kitties, and this one has the coughing fits, one has colitis on an ongoing basis and one has just recovered from serious cat-flu. I'm disabled, and on low income and it's been a struggle. I want to do the right thing.
@valkyriav

He explained in this video that asthma is basically allergy in the lungs. So yes she could have a dust allergy. Do what you can to make her more comfortable. If it’s the rare cough, it’s fine. If it’s more frequent, you’ll need to figure something out, clean more thoroughly, or consider rehoming her.

I have been to 3 clinics, none of the doctors performed X-ray, I felt it is suspicious, cause we perform X ray in Ukraine when it comes to lung diseases. Doc said my cat has athma just looking at him and watching the video where my cat coughs. So I found this info that you gave in the video very helpful. Thanks a lot!! My cat Daisy has asthma. It’s well controlled as long as she gets her inhaler every day, and she gets a lot of squishes and treats with it. I made it a part of her feeding routine, and she runs up for it every time. Her sister supervises and gets treats as well. I watched other videos when I was trying to figure out what to do, and I appreciate this one for reassuring me that I’m doing everything right. I initially had a vet who made me feel like a neglectful owner for not wanting to pay for bloodwork, but I let the second one do the x-ray. Daisy had the little donuts on her x-ray, and she has a heart murmur. She is also the sweetest cat in the world, and I’m so glad I can make her life more pleasant

Very informative video. My cat had somewhat rare asthma attacks a few years ago but the vets always ignored it, until eventually it evolved into more severe and weekly if not daily coughing. The small vets for some reason would never diagnose or treat it properly until I went to a larger pet hospital which prescribed some prednisolone to first see if it helped. After it very much did we switched to fluticasone with an aerokat and I've been using it since. It took maybe a week for my cat to get used to it but he doesn't mind so much since I cuddle him at the same time. And to other pet owners make sure they don't prescribe branded fluticasone like Flovent which costs twice as much for the same thing.

As usual, brilliant video. These should almost be mandatory to watch for cat owners. Also very topical for us as we have a foster cat who has been suffering mainly from almost daily throwing up (often with some hair, but usually not. he's a long haired cat as well) and occasionally coughing after drinking water. The coughing did not look like what you showed in the video, more like "I have stuff stuck in my throat that makes me want to clear my airways and almost throw up, but not quite". The coughing also never lead to throwing up. There was no breathing difficulties between the coughs. Unfortunately since we don't talk directly to the vets but talk through the animal shelter it was initially diagnosed as asthma that now doesn't seem to be the case, which was my view in the first place. Either way, I trust the vets will find the answer and I hope he will be healthy because he's the best cat :) I don't know why I went so deeply into the cats medical history, it's just been a big part of my life the past few months and I feel someone else needs to know too :D

My little one has "hairballs" multiple times a week, has been on several week-long antibiotic courses, and is doing just a touch better on Loratadine, which I had to beg the vet to let us try. Dr. Uri, you said that the crouching-abdominal-coughing might be seen as our cats are attempting to cough-up a furball. But, do cats with asthma also display this coughing symptom at other times, e.g. when there's no furball to cough-up, as a symptom of respiratory distress? In other words, is it only coughing + furball that's symptomatic of asthma, or is it just the asthma coughing is more obvious when our cats are coughing-up their periodic furballs? As ever, a very useful video. It reminded me that one of our two cats used to have these coughing bouts, but we thought it was just part of the process of coughing up a furball. Today, you've taught me that there's a 90% probability that one of our cats suffered from asthma. But then, this was before "the clean air act" which banned the burning of coal in our homes, and we'd often have days when you couldn't see your own hand if you stretched out your arm, the smog was literally that bad! Wishing you and Claudia all the very best from England, Rick

Never had a cat with a nail trimming problem until Furgie. Not even one that we started pawdicures at 12 years old. BTW we have a pug and we always call the reverse sneezes “dog asthma attacks”. Winnie the Pug had nasal palate surgery when she was spayed and rarely gets them.

Wow. My cat needed a full mouth tooth extraction because of stomatitis. She also coughs like this every couple of months, and has IBS. I’d say she’s a poster child for autoimmune diseases!

I'd suggest at first sign, change litter to a good quality dustless. Costco is horrible since they changed packaging and caused my cat to develop respiratory distress, as did the cheap bag I picked up in a pinch from Bosley's the other day. She's back to normal now thanks to odourlock maxcare :) Canadian Tire also carries a real good one, can't remember the name. Many many ppl use cheap kitty litter, it's very dusty and well...

One of my cats was diagnosed with feline asthma a few months ago. He is on the inhaler regiment and it's really helped. Thank you so much for this video. I picked up a few tips regarding putting the inhaler puffs into the chamber before I put the Aerokat on my kitty. I was doing it while it was already on his face. Pre-loading it will be so much simpler.

thank you, dr burstein, for all your wonderful videos. i wish my vet had known more about asthma in cats. for a few years i saw these signs in one of my kitties, and i brought it up with my vet several times. and was completely dismissed. in the end, i lost my sweet girl to pleural effusion, definitely from asthma. it was devastating, and i really wish i had known to push the issue with the vet.

Im really glad you took this subject on at last! I got a 6 year old kitty and after I finally was able to determine she has vhronic rhinitis and treat that. In the cond year, she started getting these scary coughs. As I was trying to figure it out, there were no really few informative youtube viseos and vets weren't a ton of help, even though they said it night be asthma after chest X-rays. I finally went to a cat specialist and she helped me understand that my cat has seasonal, spring allergies. I have an inhaler just in case, but last year, i didnt let my cat out on the patio In April + May, and ran a filtration unit all day for those months. She only had one cough episode. I searched all your videos at the time, so I'm glad youve addressed it! Also, for those with cats with chronic issues, I highly recommend a cat specialist vet if you can find one, or even a cat only clinic. Their cat knowledge is so much deeper.

I had a cat who developed stress induced asthma when I adopted another cat. It was quite scary to witness. I used the inhaler for 2 years. Then I began to wean him off and he no longer needed the inhaler. He and the new cat became friends which helped.

Welp, this video has definitely let me know my cat has asthma! It’s super infrequent though- and I work from home, so I’d know if it was happening a lot. Time to throw out my febreeze aerosols and think of any other irritants in the house!

As someone who has lived my whole life with asthma ... this makes a lot of sense. Going to see what my sister and I can do for our sweet little CJ, who definitely coughs like this somewhat often. It has been better overall since we switched to a less dust-producing litter, though!

I wish I had seen a video this informative years ago... my cat passed away in January, and she had a cough just like the one you showed. She would cough every day multiple times, and it got worse if she was ever held upside down. She first developed it years ago and my mom was convinced she had a hairball. We took her to the vet and they said the same. Didn't suggest an x-ray or blood test or anything, just listened to her lungs and said "probably a hairball." No hairball came for weeks, even with medicine. And when one eventually did come, she still coughed. We couldn't afford many vet visits since the flea medicine was so expensive already, so she unfortunately lived the rest of her life coughing. I'm not sure if that's what did her in, 'cause during her final few weeks she stopped eating, but her usual spasms started getting heavy and labored. After seeing that, I immediately took her to get put down. I feel so guilty that I let this family and that vet dismiss her cough for so long. I feel like I could have made her life so much easier for her if we had gone to that other vet sooner, but they said she was too far gone for her age. A part of me hopes it was just her time anyway, she lived for 15 years after all, and had several other problems that old cats tend to get. Still, I hate that I could've done more for her. I hope she loved me despite my failures as a pet owner, and I won't make the same mistakes for my other two babies.

Your previous video on this is what caused me to ask my vet about asthma in my cat - it's changed her life to get diagnosed. She is now on a daily steroid inhaler (which is easier to teach a cat to use than people think) and her symptoms are way way better. If she's coughing every once in a while too, I try and and give gentle chest PT to help her loosen the mucus and get it out Oh, and her previous vet put her on systemic steroids, and she was on it for over a year, then she got a toothache and wasn't eating as well, and then the oral steroids gave her gastric bleeding. I wish we had started on the inhaler right away!

Thank you , this was most helpful. My cat was diagnosed as possible asthmatic when I first got him. He was given prednisone tablets. He had a dental last year, and almost died from the procedure. My new vet has suggested possibly using an inhaler but is not in a hurry. I don’t like using the tablets for an extended period, because I know I’m humans, that’s not recommended either. Now, I am armed with valid information , going to talk to my vet again and request X-ray and inhaler w/ chamber. Thank You sooo much.

i KNEW my cat mightve have asthma for several years, but whenever i described the way she would cough (exactly as shown in your video) everyone told me “oh thats just hairballs”. The only one who agreed with me was a vet. My cat is doing fine but she does cough occasionally and i plan to get her an inhaler. But please everyone, always consult a vet and not just friends and family. So many ppl seems to mistake coughing and hairball hurling as the same thing. Thank you for validating something i have suspected so long but was told was not the case.

my cat does exactly what's shown in the video and I had the suspicion for the longest time, my first vet back in Ireland paid me no mind when I told him about it, no tests, no nothing, he just sent me back home with a hairball paste and that was that. Thankfully my new vet back in my country, Spain, listened to me a lot more and asked me if I could record a video of my cat next time she showed the symptoms I was describing and after seeing it she did say it seemed like a respiratory problem so she ordered x-ray and she said she did see slightly affected bronchi, I don't remember the exact word she used, but as of yet she didn't suggest any treatment, I kept recording the occurrences of coughing I noticed in my cat to monitorice the frequency and it sits at around once every two weeks or something like that for the ones I am able to see on her. THANKS A LOT FOR THIS VIDEO. I hope lots of people see it and cat advocate for their cats better than I did, I'm glad I ended up getting a second opinion when I moved back to Spain

I keep trying to use this with my cat. I first had a few weeks of dry runs, cause she really hates any manipulation on herself (unless it’s getting cuddles all over). I got her to accept it for 3 to 5 breaths without the medication. However with the medication she freaks out as soon as she takes the first breath. She must really hate the spray. I give her a treat after every half breath and try like 5 times. Sometimes she seems to be holding her breath, the sneaky little girl (the flappy thingy doesn’t move). I’ll keep trying, though.

Both my cats sometimes have cough attacks, and both their radios and exam show no obvious signs of asthma. They both gor antibiotics for a few weeks and inhalations for a month and the cough stopped almost completely. They are both prone to rhino crisis tho, so it probably was that + a respiratory infection. But to be honest, if it's asthma or an infection, go see a vet anyway if your cat coughs like in the video. At some point before going to the vet, one of my cats had an attack so bad they had trouble breathing and I had to hold her like if she was choking and gently tap her back to stimulate her breathing

Hi Dr. Uri, Clawdia does look very squishy!!!😂 Thank you very much for explaining this. I suspected that my cat Angelina Jolie had asthma because of this "cough" just like the video you showed but no hairballs so I did take her to her regular vet and they did all the x-rays (3 sides) and her lungs looked normal, she detected very little inflammation that she thought was more age related since she's 14 so now we just monitor her and I have added air purifiers and changed her litter pellets that don't clump to reduce dust and that seem to improve the cough. What I now notice after 8 months is that it's more of a seasonal allergy thing because she's fine in the winter months but starts coughing in the summer. We'll see how this summer goes, fingers crossed. But it's so nice to have you back, you were so missed .😻👏👏👏👌👍
