I'm not sure if, in this particular case, it actually was. Cats will also sometimes reflexively blink when things are coming at their face, much like humans might, too. I've also noticed that sometimes cats will blink at other creatures or humans in an attempt to try and pacify or butter-them-up in a sense, kind of like taking a defensive rather than offensive strategy, especially if they feel like victory or escape is not possible.

I used to volunteer in cat shelters and just seeing the most skittish kitties become all lovey dovey and sweet was such an amazing feeling. There were two cats who were adopted and then returned after 2 weeks due to the family ending up being allergic to cats. These poor kitties were so stressed out, scared, growled and didn't want me anywhere near them. The other volunteers on the other days of the week and myself were very patient with these cats, keeping our distance, feeding them, letting them out to explore, etc. A week later, those same cats let me give them scratchies, purred up a storm and gave tons of headbonks! Not very long after, they were both given a third chance and adopted together by a young woman who lived by herself and wasn't allergic. It's been over a year and I believe they're doing well. I have two kitties of my own and they bring my fiancé and I so much joy!

I can't help but admire the fighting spirit of tiny feral kittens. Even before their eyes open they snarl, hiss, and try to bite intruders. 20lbs of fight in an 8oz body. Then we get to earn the tiny warriors' trust. In that perspective it is truly an honor to be trusted by a feral cat.

It's insane they get like that, because they're not taught that. They just are that. The same goes for pigs when they become feral. They just naturally grow hair and tusks. Not sure if anyone knows exactly why though. (Might be a good thing to read up on).

From my experience don't start petting them in the head or neck. Pet them in the back. It's easy to do that when they are eating and it's actually similar to what mom cat do when they feed their kitten. Gradually they'll let you pet their back even when they're not feeding. Afterwards they'll headbunt your arm themselves once they're comfortable.

Ohh from my experience petting pets from the back especially when they are eating even if you guys are close they would turn around rlly fast because they might think they are in danger because they can’t see where your petting them or who is petting them (They also get scared bc they might think your gonna hurt them) and they are sometimes pretty defensive of their property and it would create an awkward relationship. This is just based on my experience and I also learned this from a channel about huskies (but the person said this applies was for all dogs) Im not sure if its the same for kittens but I do think so.

We had a 3 wk old kitten show up who was aggressive and skittish. It would flip around in the cage so we had to hold it instead of pet him. I’ve been playing with and feeding a 7 week old kitten maybe 8 weeks old now, and it is a little heartbreaking but what’s more heartbreaking is that the reason they feel like that. Like that barrier was broken to just accept contact. It because they’re not tigers anymore. They’re cats. But they’re feral cats. So they have instincts like tigers and don’t even realize Love is an option. The kitten I mentioned that I play with will catch herself being too happy or comfy and she’ll run away rly quick out of anxiety of like “oh I will take her or she’ll never come back outside or maybe I’m gonna eat her” so I just still monitor if she wants domestication or the wild. But from my observations she craves attention and playtime, she doesn’t rly wanna do survival. I can tell because some cats like her mother hunt the birds around here. I’ve accidentally catered to this kitten to think porch food is the way of life. Our lease is up in the winter so I’d have to leave her with being taught nothing by her peers on how to survive or I starve her out. Or I take her in.

not every cat is the same. It's not alright to adopt a cat thinking one day they will be in your lap. We have a 4 year old feral cat, she's ok sleeping at our place, rubbing against my mum's legs for food, but touching her is a big no-no even after 4 years. People gotta realize all cats have their own personality.
@cappuccinocappy
@cappuccinocappy 11 ай бұрын
@@kart1372 ofc every cat has a different personality, I do believe tho that your cat is the way it it because humans did the cat harm when it was younger. Ofc the cat will have a hard time trusting again after being abused outside by strangers for example , there are a lot of people out there who hate cats and purposefully harm them and that is not okay in the slightest. We found a cat that also was really feral 4 years ago and my mother bonded with her after I believe 5-6 months until she really became tame, she was the sweetest cat out there and she even showed us her kitties. All of them found a home and we neutered her, she sadly never came back to us after one storm even after looking for her in the whole village for weeks. Anyway what I wanted to say is that I got one of the kittens and she also behaved feral if you could say that. she is now 3 years old and the most affectionate cat I know and I believe that this is because we never treated her bad in any way or form since she was 8 weeks old. We also had a cat that sadly died of cancer with 16, she was a cat that behaved relatively cold to everyone except to my mom. My father rescued her from teenagers that tossed and kicked her around when she was a young cat. This is what I meant with if you can tame them they will give you trust and love, you have to earn their trust and love and you also could loose said trust and love if you harm them in any way or form. Sorry for the long text but I wanted to explain myself better since English is not my first language.

@@cappuccinocappy no, she was born in our house. We have a big farm for her, no neighbors around. We tried touching her like the girl in the video but she's been a coward from the moment she was born , so we stopped and haven't petted her ever since. She touches her on her own terms and walks away as soon she sees a hand coming close to her. She had no issues showing us her kitties and all, or being completely drunk asleep, belly up in the wide open in front of us, but just wont let us touch her. It's been 4 years so we have no hope for her being loving and cuddly , but truth be told she's a good cat. She brings mice for my mum to eat lol. And we've accepted her for who she is. After all we're living in her house.

When I was socializing my boy and his siblings, we kept them in the main bathroom and I would just go sit in there with them, provide food, and let them get used to me just… existing with them in their space. Eventually they approached me and my mom on their terms. We rehomed my boy’s siblings and he eventually became my emotional support animal and ended up saving my life when I was in high school. Never underestimate the bonds you can form with an animal that you’ve taken care of and loved for almost their whole lives… especially feral ones you’ve helped to socialize.

We used to have a stray cat that was extremely scared of people and wouldn't let anyone come near it no matter how many tried.. I worked alone on the graveyard shift and would throw out food while I was sitting outside smoking and waiting for customers.. after about a week or so, the cat started slowly making its way closer and closer to me, until it got brave enough to come take the treats from my hand.. after a month working there, the cat had pretty much adopted me and would actually come rub between my legs and ask for pets and treats.. my coworkers and regular customers who had known how antisocial the cat was before I came along, were shocked at how sweet the cat turned out to be.. one couple who had always wanted to try to feed the cat and could never get it to interact with them, eventually were able to gain its trust, and decided to adopt it and give it the home I couldn't (thanks to pet restrictions where I lived).. I've had similar experiences with other cats and dogs as well, but that one always made such an impact because I knew that I had helped all of them find their happy home together.. patience, persistence and getting down to their level was all it took for me to help that cat learn to trust humans..

Very true. We were in a similar situation. Only by taking in both mamma and daughter, were we able to help them. ( They were the two worst ferrel cats that we had to date.) Sadly, mamma was very sick but still very full of fight. The mamma cat we named Grandma, the daughter we named Squirt. Squirt would never leave grandma that's why taking both of them in was important to her as well as us. Squirt was pregnant when we took them in so her kittens were no problem as they were born inside the safety of our home. Taking Grandma and Squirt to the vet was a challenge. Thank goodness we have an excellent vet who came to the house. Sadly, Grandma passed away two years later still ferrel. 😿 It has been four years now for Squirt and she is still semi ferrel but will now interact with humans and play with toys and the rest of her cat family. Squirt is still a labor of love in progress as we refuse to give up on her. Bottom line Squirt came to trust us because we cared for not only her but her mamma and babies. 😻

You can't start petting the from the head down. You have to pet them gently with something small like a chopstick and rub their chest. Then you let them smell you and gently ease your hand to scratch their chin. If you reach for the top of their head, they'll think you're grabbing them and/or trying to hurt them. I've just trapped and tamed an entirely feral kitten in a day, and have always done it in a day or two. Some cats take longer, but if at week one they're still spitting and screaming, then something isn't being done correctly. He shouldn't be in the kennel for more than two days, and should be given freedom to roam a small, confined room. If you're worried about them running under things: block off holes and gaps with an old towel or shirt, also considering a walking harness so they'll get used to your company AND have freedom to roam safely without running off. Always let the kitten sniff first and go from bottom to top. All cats love pets, you just need to find their spot and earn their trust ☺

I think another good tactic might be to let them roam freely, cover the kennel so they might associate it as a safe place to hide when they feel uncomfortable. Comfortability with human presence and the kennel at the same time!

What a cute little kitty Tips: let the cat befriend you first. Let it decide when it wants to approach you. If it hisses and seems scared, back away, sit down (get on its level sort of) so you don't seem big and dominant. Let it approach you. Let it smell your hand and if it lets you, try petting it under the chin, rather than on the head. If it wants you to stop, then stop. It's okay. You can befriend it with food. Offer the cat some food. First from a distance. Like put some food in a bowl somewhere nearby, and keep distance. Sometimes they'll enjoy the food and want more try luering them to you with food, they see that as friendly Let it know you're a gentle friend and eventually it will get used to you

Actually, the best way to tame a feral kitten or cat is to simply just spend time with them in the room where their kennel/crate/enclosure is, sit down facing away from them and just be there. Let them take the time that they need to accept you as part of their environment without expecting the reward of affection from them, and don't impose yourself upon them. In due time, curiosity will win them over, and they will come to you -- if you are patient enough to give them the time that they need. While still facing away from them, try introducing food treats by holding a few behind your back in your hands. Again, allow them to come to you to investigate you. The smell of food will draw them in towards your hands where the food is. Sniffing your hands will encourage them to associate your smell with the offering of food, imprinting you on them with a sense of security and safety and not something that poses a threat thereof

It's most important to give them space, let them explore and feel comfortable, then they will eventually realise that you are not a threat and start approaching themselves

I tried that with other ones and they do not let me touch them, if you give them a place to hide, it will be very difficult to socialize.

Yes! Best to not even touch them at first! And I always spray the Feliway calming spray inside their cage. I always play cat specific healing Frequencies, found here, on KZfaq. Then Always starting w/ tempting food on a baby spoon, making them eventually come to you for the treat. I have found success using a training clicker as well. It's super important doing the click properly, at the exact moment they are receiving the treat. I highly recommend everyone check out "Kitten School" on KZfaq. She has Excellent tips & tricks that are very helpful.

I've been feeding a few ferrel cats over by a church but they told me to get rid of them. I was devastated because I had already adopted n domesticated two of them...and had no more room at home for more cats ...I quickly came up with a plan which was to request permission from the next door to feed them in his back yard . The neighbor reluctantly agreed as long as it was just thier bowls for food..so I feed them every day there at the neighbors . In the mean time I hav been trapping and getting them fixed....I feel alone in this endeavor no support group of like minded caring people ........no proper shelter in most counties here in Wyoming......there are two small groups of rescues but rarely ever answer the phone .....I m getting attached to some of the ferrel cats ....I named them all...I'm a bit discouraged n sad because I haven't seen about half of them lately not sure where they are.....

Unfortunatly that little spiceball would probably never come on its own like that in due time . kittens under 8 weeks gets "tame" very quickly, 8-12 weeks takes longer and over 12 weeks you need to have to patience. it takes from a few days to weeks depending on their age and situation. And you dont handle them like this for long either. You give them space but cant let them hide away. Lots of treats, purritos the kitties, desensitize them to touch and toys does it. A feral kitten vs a kitten born with humans around but not handled and with a mama that likes humans vs a mama that flees humans are 2 very different scenarios. Pretty much all rescues recommend the same version of taming feral little habaneros like this. regardless of which country you look it up in. I think the youtuber here did a tremendous job.

You can't just force pets upon them at day 1. You let them eat and talk to them while keeping a distance to make them feel more comfortable with your presence. Read their body language. This is traumatizing for them, as you can see with the labored hissing. I mean, do what you do, but there are much better ways to bond. Playing with toys once their comfortable with you being in their vicinity is another good way to earn their affection.

As a suggestion, try to feed the kitten and just sit in the same area as them as they eat and just talk to them about anything. This way they can get used to your presence and also see your not a threat and that your willing to take care of them.
