James was born with only two legs and went through a very rough beginning--but now he is thriving! In this video I offer some advice for working with mobility challenged kittens, and talk about James' case. You can see my first video about James here: • A Long Update on James...

"they don't need your pity, they need your support" I'm physically disabled and this is exactly it!!! So many people will look at disability in both humans and other animals as such a sad thing, but it's really just a neutral thing. There's parts that are bad (I have severe chronic pain and that wouldn't go away even if society changes), but most of it is just my normal life. Most of the reasons disabled people are disabled is because society has not accommodated us or even thought about us at all. And then there's the people who look at disabled people as inspirations, and that's just as bad, honestly. I've seen people do that with disabled animals, as well. Don't ignore the disability, but don't make it the only thing you see! I'm really proud(? Encouraged?) of what you're doing with disabled kittens. It's incredibly heartwarming to see someone willing to help these kittens be kittens! My goal is to one day be able to take care of sick, disabled, and/or elderly cats and kittens, and be able to provide them with a good home and support system to be the best cats they can be. Unfortunately, that goal is still quite a ways off - I need help looking after myself right now, and my family and I have a cat that's as much work as several kitties haha but someday!

Honestly as somebody who is disabled (and is able to live a mostly normal life thanks to my work/way I worked hard to counter my disability) having people go "You're such an inspiration" At first it felt nice.... then it started getting old. It's like "C'mon, I'm just doing what you guys do, I didn't solve world peace or end world hunger lol" It's like people want to mollycoddle us instead of yanno, treating us like we're normal people. I think my favorite people are the people who will give me a strong handshake as I give them a strong handshake back (even though I have muscle issues) and will treat me like I'm normal person.

As a physically disabled person who loves cats and has fostered a lot of kittens in the past (nowhere near as many as you), I am so, so super happy to see that James is doing well now and that he's living the life. All that kitten energy is beautiful, especially when you see it from a kitten who was previously very sick. Thank you for helping him get strong enough to use his body in the best way possible and for treating him as capable. Keep it up, James. You got this. Oh, and thank you for embracing the social model of disability (that the environment isn't accessible) much more than the medical model of disability (that there's something wrong with the body of the person or animal and the way they have to exist in it). It warms my heart that you see it that way, even in cats. There's nothing wrong with James. He's just existing in his body the way it was made. He'll still be just as good a cat to someone with two legs as he would be with four - and honestly, maybe even better because of what he's had to deal with.

Same! I ended up with a 1 week old dehydrated constipated kitten that was fed boiled chicken and taken away from her mother. I took her to the vet and was told if I'd waited just a day or two she might've DIED. All she did was cry out to me at night and I'd just cry with her, her little meows were so weak, it broke my heart to see her in that state. Lol I of course, cried when she finally pooped and was starting to feel better. (she's a spoiled 5 year old cat now ❤)

As a person who suffers from extreme constipation (I'm on a med that has changed my life and I'm doing much better,) I can tell you that getting all that stool out was such a big relief for him. I had a foster this year that was born without eyes and only half of a nose. Everyone thought it was so sad and kept saying how pitiful she was. She was the happiest kitten ever! She was so playful and sassy. I had her until she was 6 months and by the time she got adopted she could do anything any other kitten could do and had memorized the layout of my 3 story house! They are amazing at adapting and learning how to live with what disabilities they have.

Isabelle Marshall it’s actually pretty easy to get started fostering cats/kittens if you have the time and a good home environment for little kitties. you can ask your shelter directly if they need help, or you can look online for organizations near you. you’ll probably have to fill out some kind of form, but they’re always looking for new people and as long as you’re a trustworthy person and have a good home and schedule, they’ll most likely accept your offer to help! you’ll also probably be able to decide what cats/kittens you want to foster, based on your needs and what you’re capable of doing. so don’t worry, you won’t have to solve a case like james’ if you don’t feel comfortable.

Isabelle Marshall it’s super easy! Just look up websites of any rescues or shelters in your area and there should be information about their foster program. You can usually fill out an application to be a foster through their website and they will contact you. I go through 2 rescues and our county’s animal control. They call me when they have kittens to see if I can take them and then the rescue handles everything with the adoption process. Kitten Lady’s website has lists of everything you would need to be prepared for caring for kittens. You don’t have to take special needs or newborns you can let them know what you are comfortable taking. It’s so rewarding!

About 2 months ago, we found a kitten with paralyzed legs. I didn't think he was going to survive the first night we brought him in, but he did. We decided to keep him. At first he had absolutely no movement in his tail or rear legs. His rear legs were nothing but bone, we couldn't feel muscle in them. After exercising him, massaging him, feeding him and loving him, he can freely move his tail and is building muscle in his legs. He can kick, pull his legs up and squeeze his toes. He hasn't stood on his rear legs yet, but he is getting stronger everyday. He bolts around the room, plays with everything and loves to snuggle. I love my little Koda so much. It makes me so happy knowing that we were able to save him and give him a happy life. I love seeing your videos. They are so encouraging as I go through this new journey with my kitten. I wish little James the best. It is amazing how far he has come.

My kitty, Lilac, has the same condition. Her rear feet never formed and she is tiny, at under 5lbs. She was found in the wild caring for her litter of kittens, and was taken care of by a foster family before I adopted her so I didn't have to go through much of what you did in this video. But, having also previously had a 3-legged cat, I can say that your advice is spot-on about not coddling them too much. My 3-legged kitty had absolutely ZERO mobility issues and could climb and get on top of anything in the house that she wanted to. The only thing she couldn't do was scratch one side of her face, and she trained me pretty quickly on how to do that for her. And, Lilac has me equally well trained to care for her scratching needs. I did have to make some slight alterations to the house to make things easier on Lilac, like cutting in a cat door in the wall between the living and laundry rooms. That way, she doesn't have to traverse the linoleum of the kitchen. Of course, she has zero problem on the linoleum when I'm cooking something that smells good. Like James, she's SUPER food motivated! I also had to train her to get comfortable using the stairs to get up on the bed just like you did for little James. I'm so glad to see him thrive like my little Lilac! You do amazing work! Also, if anyone is interested in poorly shot, unedited videos of Lilac, just look at my channel.

Listening to this really hit home with me and gave me several ideas for dealing with one of my own rescues. Mine is not physically or mentally disabled. But, she was so traumatized from what she went through before I got her that she's still having a hard time getting along with the other cats in the household. So, the main work with her is reteaching her how to socialize with other cats just like she used to as a foster kitten at a friend's house before her original owners took her and dropped her into a different, yet very bad living situation. Anyways, my issue has been trying to not over coddle her in an emotional sense. So, this both reminded me of watching out for that an other things i can do to continue to help her out when it comes to her current living situation. Thanks. ^-^

New to this channel, amusing that the first video I saw was about giving a tiny kitten an enema. Hannah, your love, enthusiasm, and knowledge are wonderful. After seeing this video, and videos of paralyzed kittens or with swimmers, you can teach all of us about physical therapy for cats! God bless you and Andrew.

Awe! I have a Lynx-Point Siamese- "M.I.A." -who was born with only her front legs. They are super special & VERY independent sweet souls! 🥰 Definitely requires a specialized diet, litter, litterbox & activities to keep her healthy & active so patience is a must-have!
