helsinki finland - Suomenlinna Island Exploring the Archipelago and Fortress
In this video we leave Vallissari island (see part 1 here: • Exploring FINNISH Isla... ) and make our way over to another of Helsinki’s famous islands Suomenlinna.
We arrive with just a few hours of sunlight left and make our way over to the The Suomenlinna Church which was originally built during the Russian regime in 1854 as an Eastern Orthodox garrison church for the Russian troops stationed at the Suomenlinna sea fortress.
After Finland gained independence the church was consecrated to function as a Lutheran church in 1918 and a year later the Russian looking cupolas were removed from the top of the towers. By 1929 the whole church had been renovated to incorporate a much more Western design.
After the church we walked over to check out the famous dry dock which is the oldest in Finland and one of the oldest operational dry docks in Europe. It was cool to see but dry docks really freak us out as the thought of being down there underneath a ship looks so ominous!
On our way over to see the fortress we checked out some tunnels which were also getting pretty eery as dusk was arriving by this point but we made it to explore the fortress just before sunset!

Suomenlinna is really fantastic - there is a lot to see, but when you go there in Summer when it is really warm, the main attraction is not the guns or the museums or old buildigs - people go there to have a picnic by the sea. The ferries are full and there is a lot of people, and yet the area is so large you will always find an empty and even isolated spot somewhere. There are also good cafes and restaurants and an excellent summer theatre. People go swimming from the rocks or they arrive by their own sailing boats. The tunnels are pretty scary, you chose the one with actual daylight...but there is no real danger in the tunnels, and you never get lost - for a very long time that is. It is the cliffs and walls where unfortunate accidents have happened. So, you always have to be careful to watch where you step and not just look at the scenery.One of my favorite places in Helsinki. And to be honest, there are many other islands right next to the city centre that all have their special character and something you will not find on any other island. Pihlajasaari island is a paradise.

Island looks super with it's interesting Cathedral/lighthouse, dry dock & Fortress. Really an added bonus seeing it all from above too, with your great aerial views, loved them! Fortress looked huge & did look a bit scary inside especially as it got even darker once you went in - dont think I'd venture in, so it enabled me to see inside & it looks very interesting. That Ferry DID look close!!! Loved the way you captured it through the window opning! Brill! Enjoyed all the beautiful sunset shots too! Helsinki & it's Harbour look beautiful at night!, so well lit! Looks a great place to visit, another one on the list!!! ! Thanks ....Look forward to seeing the national park.....

I just love your videos TKT. There was a short clip of a rare, old submarine on your video. It was built in Turku, Finland for Germany and launched in 1933. Finland bought the submarine back in 1936 and she was named Vesikko. Together with four other submarines, Vesikko took part in the Winter and Continuation Wars 1939-1944. After the war Vesikko was the only Finnish submarine that was not scrapped. After extensive renovation it was open to the public as an exhibit of Military Museum in Suomenlinna in 1973. Vesikko is the Military Museum's most popular attraction and also globally a significant memorial to naval warfare.

Thank you so much! 😊 That is so interesting hearing about the submarines history, it was such a cool submarine we had to show it. It’s had quite an interesting journey, so pleased it was renovated and kept for the museum☺️ In our original route plan we were going to visit Turku before getting the boat from there over to Sweden, the pandemic meant we had to completely change all that, next time we hope to do what we originally planned! 🙂

In fact Finland could not have submarines according our 1947 Peace Treaty with Sovjets (and the Brits ☺).
@jorluo
@jorluo 3 жыл бұрын
@@yoretabio4537 Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, Finland unilaterally declared that the arms restriction articles of the Paris Peace Treaty, with the exception of the nuclear ban, were no longer valid, due to the tremendous development of weapons systems around the world since World War II (notice the number of Finnish fighter planes). Both Britain and the Soviet Union stated then that they did not oppose that declaration. - I think the main reason why Finland doesn't have submarines is the fact that they are very expensive and not absolutely useful in the shallow waters of the Finnish archipelago and other sea areas. Heh, although I'm sure the admirals would like to have a few.

Too bad the cells for death row prisoners during the civil war weren't open while you visited. Because those are EERIE to visit. I worked there as a guide one summer during an audio installation, and it actually had an age limit of 13. Many people came out of there either terrified or teary-eyed. I'm not one to believe in ghosts or spirits generally, but being in those cells really gets to you in a way that is hard to explain.

I know that ferry terminal well. When I was 18, which would be 1974 I was to meet this girl that I had met at Mustikkamaa midsummer festival to go to Suomenlinna. Then I got a call about a good car to buy. Bought the car, ran out of gas that they had drained, was hours late to the ferry terminal, no cell phones back then. But there she was "no big deal, lots of my friends have gone by" and Finns are punctual, being late is not cool. Spent the summer with her driving around Finland, she was 16. When school started, I brought her to my parents and my mother did not accept her. And her parents had just divorced, neither one wanting her. So I had to let her go, even though I was deeply in love. I introduced her to all my friends in Helsinki and Stockholm, both and told them that she is really nice and I was no longer with her. 26 years later I Googled her name (Google was new) as I was still in love. She ended up spending time here in Los Angeles and me spending time with her in Stockholm (she was still in touch with my old friends) and Kenya where she worked as a medical doctor for Doctors without Borders, she was sweet. Lasted for a few more years, started at that ferry terminal.
