Thanks for the information about that elegant instrument. I'm a Turk, we have some set of authentic bowed instruments like Yayli Tanbur, Klasik kemence, Rebap, Iklık, kemane vs. Some of them originates from central asia and some of them created in Anatolia, mostly in a simplistic way. But that instrument, hurdy gurdy. Is it so sweet, technical and practical :) And has nice drone tones.

I've been trying to figure out how the trompette strings work and this has the closest description I could find. And up close slow motion would be interesting as a detailed video.

Wonderful and very useful too! I want to learn how to play and where I am (western Pennsylvania USA) I know of no one who could teach me.

That is an instrument I find very interesting and appealing. I am writing High Fantasy, and have a character, a wandering princess who plays music. Originally I had her play a magical violin, then added a magical electric guitar and had her use one or the other depending on her preference. Now that I know about the hurdy gurdy, I think I am going to replace the princess' violin and electric guitar for a hurdy gurdy, it looks more exotic, more magical, and also very complex in its construction, as something only nobles and royalty would be able to afford in a fantasy world. Where can I learn more in depth about it? Any place where I can chat with musicians willing to aid a fantasy writer? Any features or add-ons that would be more likely seen in a hurdy gurdy designed for a solo musician? Thanks :)

What about the 'sound box'? (sorry I know nothing about musical instrument terminology) The violin and the acoustic guitar have distinctive body shapes and 'sound holes' that contribute to their overall sound. What governs the shape of the Hurdy Gurdy? And does it even have any sound holes?
