One of the most important aspects of HEMA, and one of the hardest to train by yourself, is working in the bind and feeling how the swords interact. Nothing replaces training with a partner, but this video gives you ideas on how to simulate Binden and Fuhlen on your own. Enjoy!

Yet again, thanks so much! It is no substitute for a sparring partner, but this is a great idea for practising at home that doesn't involve as much imagination on my part!

You're welcome! Right, not a substitution, but hopefully a great addition.

Stuff like this helps so much. Im fairly new to this, been practising for over half a year, studying my sources and gind the time to train solo every night for an hour. I can only manage to spar for real once a month, but honestly your videos help me to not fall behind and actually help so much with my own interpretation!

Something I know that I'd like to see maybe, recording sparring sessions, and then talk over them describing what you're doing and how you could improve, that sort of thing.

very useful. I need to construct a more portable Pell.

This is a really good idea. Not that it's rocket science or anything, but a video on creating a pell like that could be neat. Or maybe even your opinions on what the best pells are for particular uses

While it is certainly possible to practice actions at the bind this way, it is impossible to actually learn Fühlen or Sprechfenster against a pell like this. Learning Sprechfenster (and proper Fühlen) requires being able to not only bind, but also to remain and feel with the hands, and observe the intentions of one's opponent. This cannot be done against a motionless pell (or pair of pells). It requires lots and lots and lots of practice with a live opponent who can variably choose to be hard or soft, etc. There is no substitute for this. When you bind, remain ("stand freely"), feel, and only after you have determined what your opponent is up to can you then know how you should act. You CAN practice "this is what to do when my opponent is soft" or "this is what to do when my opponent is hard". But you can not practice feeling whether your opponent is hard or soft without an opponent who can vary pressure in the bind. And some quotes, because Sprechfenster is something I love: “If it now happens that you bind with your opponent... you should stay well at the sword... So you can stand happily with relaxed mind and without fear at the sword and look, observe, and wait for what he tries to do next; and what his plan is he intends to execute. And this standing at the sword is called the Sprechfenster by Liechtenauer. If you now stand at the sword with him, you should notice and feel his technique, be it soft or hard...” -3227a “Note, this called the Sprechfenster: when he binds you on the sword with cuts or with parrying, so remain strong... and stand freely and determine what he intends to do against you.” -Ringeck “And is also called the Sprechfenster: ...as you bind against him on the sword, stand freely and see how he will fence against you.” -Peter von Danzig

And, thank goodness, KZfaq did not destroy my comment and turn it into a single-paragraph mash.

Well, obviously. In fact I make this point in the video, more than once. I actually start and end the video by saying that it is no substitute for training with a partner. Thanks for agreeing with me. Not everyone has the luxury of training partners, or can only train with others sporadically. I suppose they shouldn't train at all then, just give up. 😉

Sword Carolina, if one has a sporadic training partner, one can train effective swordsmanship sporadically. If one has no training partner, one's first priority ought to be getting a training partner. Trying to learn bindwork without a training partner at all is the equivalent of trying to learn Jiu Jitsu or wrestling without a training partner at all. Yes, you can memorize some terms and motions, but you cannot effective train these things without a partner. Period. Four times I have moved to places where I have had no training partner. Four times have I started HEMA groups so that I would have a training partner. My current school, which I also founded, is in a town of 13,000 people in a rural area (nearest town of 100k is over an hour away). I would say I understand the difficulties of finding a training partner. I would say I also understand the importance of finding a training partner, and the problems inherent in training solo.

+Michael-Forest M. Thanks for your humble résumé. Never did I recommend not training with partners. Finding partners and starting groups is a separate topic. Sword Carolina actually helps other people do that around the world, by the way. I assumed you are simply trying to balance out my video and not just argue. So to balance your excellent point: I conjecture that I one who trains with partners and with solo training has an advantage over one who only trains with partners. Thank you for your comment and for completely making your point.

Sword Carolina I have lots of respect for your videos and what you are trying to do. I personally felt that your video was designed to give inexperienced fencers the impression that they could still somehow learn Fühlen without a partner. You certainly say in the video that a pell is no replacement for a partner, but I am of the (I believe clearly stated) understanding, born of extensive experience, that Fühlen cannot be learned without a partner, period. As such, I wished to provide a counterpoint to the position I believed you were making in the video (that Fühlen can be learned effectively at all without a partner). Thus my comments. If you are arguing that more training is better than less training, I absolutely agree with you, and I am not stating that solo training has no place at all in HEMA; on the contrary, it is quite important for students who are able to attend class only infrequently to find some way to practice so that they retain what they learned in class. But if you are arguing that someone who trains with partners and trains solo has an inherent advantage over someone who trains the exact same aggregate amount of time with partners, I disagree completely.
