What if you throw a Bolognese Fencer in a Rapier Tournament?! Well you might get some good pasta, but even better cutting action. I marked all hits and cut out any fluff for a pleasant viewing experience. I also appreciate feedback in the youtubes ;)
Rules:
- 3 bouts per fight
- Total number of bouts unharmed determine the finalists.
- If equal, count points (3 for head, 2 for shin/knee, 1 rest)
- Once hit, every fighter can place one action within one step that is equally counted (historical afterblow rule)

Yup, really changes the tactics as deep thrusts are also hard place to parry an afterblow

@@SchildwachePotsdam Well, it looked fun, even if it appears vary strange to my eyes as a rapierist. Interestingly, "sabre-rapier" seems quite a common thing amonge the HEMA community when non-rapier folks try rapier sparring for fun. As a more regular rapier guy, it can prove quite a challenge to deal with all those cuts. Thanks for the video.

@@bryancole1886 That's actually the reason I used it so much. The opponents that do regularly rapier were thrown off their standard game and the ones doing the cutting as well felt just like a sidesword match to me.

@@bryancole1886 Could always say it's "spanish inspired"! From what little Destreza I'd seen, when faced against Agrippa and the like, it tends to dominate with a LOT of cutting.

Lmao my hema journey was longsword>-sabre->dussack + some dabbling in rapier in this order and I just found myself doing moulinets and stuff in hard sparring when some stress kicked in >

Great fencing! One thing I noticed, expecially in the early bouts, is that your feet seemed to slide on the floor sometimes, much more than your opponents' did: maybe a shoes-related issue? congrats on your results anyways :)

Hm, I usually have nice grip in these shoes, but looking at the footage now I see what you mean. Maybe I should clean the soles before a tournament^^

My advice is - make your camera move, or at least position it to somewhere else than "your" corner, especially in a tournament with weapons whose predominant style is very linear. As much as one may or may not appreciate staring at fencer posteriors, it's kinda hard to see what the rapiers are doing - I've watched some of what was happening on the background mirror. Ideally, you'd have two cameras at 90 degrees and cut between them, but I can see why you may not be able to do that. For fencing advice, I'm a high medieval guy, so only thing I really noticed is that you sometimes got a dead left hand - your left was just kinda stuck out behind you and didn't really move. You probably want to do something with it, like counterbalance or brace against hip? It was at least stuck out backwards and in little danger of getting hit, but still.

I was wondering where to place the camera. There were quite a few windows which completely ruin the lighting in the footage and I didn't want to film the ref's behind either... but yeah, a separate camera-person would be beneficial. As for the fencing advice: Thanks! Thrusting and off-hand action are actually my two my take-aways from the tournament. I almost lost the semi-final because of it. I was trying to use it mainly as a counterbalance for lunge & recover here... and then I barely lunged at all^^
@MartinGreywolf
@MartinGreywolf Жыл бұрын
@@SchildwachePotsdam I got the impression from the footage that you wanted to use the left hand for counterbalance and then did once, but then things started happening, pressure ramped up and the left hand kinda got... forgotten back there for the rest of the exchange. I'd guess the solution is to either drill the recovery of the hand to hip into yourself, or just use the left hand for something else entirely.

Why do you specifically prefer the Bolognese style/technique? Is it the balance between both cutting and thrusting?
@SchildwachePotsdam
@SchildwachePotsdam Жыл бұрын
Well, for one because I already train it for sidesword. So it's much easier to apply it to my Rapier game as well. Secondly, yes indeed - I like to cut 🙈 Especially in tournaments it is easily seen (and heard!) by the judges.

@@SchildwachePotsdam I assume that the field rapier would likely be used that way. I'm very interested in sidesword, but there's not a HEMA school or club within several days travel by horseback near me 😉😉

How does it feel fencing with the rapier instead of the sidesword?
@SchildwachePotsdam
@SchildwachePotsdam Жыл бұрын
Well, the measure is a bit different, but the most significant difference is the added hand protection. So especially against opponents in extented positions one needs a different game plan.
