I saw a discussion in the Facebook "I HATE CILANTRO" page, where someone was saying that the gene that makes cilantro taste bad (like soap or stinkbugs) to some of us may have evolved where plants like this one existed. I haven't seen any more research... has anyone familiar with this plant seen this speculation?

Wasn't poison hemlock used to kill Socrates? The idea of using it is that it caused complete paralysis so the person ed poisoned would feel an agonizing and slow death. I am interested in knowing how much people used to use as a sleep aide?

+Marlow Renton Love Socrates already. He chose that his wages should be paid and free dinners for the rest of his life by the government, they chose a mixture with poison hemlock. Satirical humour, my favorite medicine.

Marlowe, one thing I've noticed is the American water hemlock has different leaves according to the videos on here, are there different varieties of water hemlock? If so that would explain it. The video from america is right under yours in the search list on a channel called Hidden Florida. Any ideas?

The stem has grooves on it, does it not? I've spotted it near the canal, Its definetly not cow parsley which I recognise by the leaves and flowers.

Yes, it's safe to touch. It is not a contact poison, like the cuckoo pint. And it is not phytotoxic, like giant hogweed, and for some people common hogweed. BUT wash your hands afterwards. Deaths have occurred apparently when children have used the stems, of dangerous Umbelliferae such as hemlock, to make pea shooters. You don't want any of the poison in your mouth. When living in Greece I saw the tiny containers in a museum that were used for holding the juice of hemlock (not water dropwort) to execute prisoners. It doesn't take much.

Here in Papua New Guinea, we eat a plant(raw) very similar to that with meat especially barbecued or roasted and that plant grows on water or mostly on wet grounds, so I'm wondering if that's the same plant. Sam talks about it in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q96VnNuAvN-xfnk.html at 4:28
