If you lift your hammock straps higher up the tree you will avoid a good proportion on the tarp sag. I also intend to use the Hennessy hammock water collection & tensioners - you’ll appreciate the maths & physics behind all this Jessica

We have been using these hammocks for several years now, We have slept in anything from heat to cooler weather down to 20 some odd degrees, Ours are a sim zip so the bug net zips out of the way. That was an excellent visual on the diagonal on these hammocks, you did a great job of explaining it so others will understand the design better. Thanks again for sharing you videos with us and I hope you have a blessed week my friend. Dale

Even with a structural ridgeline maintaining a 30 degree angle is still a good idea. Lower angles multiply the inward force that is applied to the straps/trees . At a 5 degree angle a 200 pound person will exert 1147 pounds of inward force on each strap/tree. At 30 degrees that inward force is 173 pounds per strap/tree. Much less risk of breakage and much less damaging to the tree. The ridgeline simply maintains a consistent amount of sag in the hammock itself.

I've had my Ultralight Backpacker with Monsoon rainfly for 1 week. I have spent 2 nights in it with the double bubble pad and a big old sleeping bag. First night it was 37 degrees, second night was 30 and woke up with 2 inches of snow on the ground. The second night I shoved a cheap closed cell pad under the bubble pad and slept amazingly warm considering my sleeping bag is from the jurassic period and takes up 20 liters of backpack. LOL.

"Kiddy-whompous". HAHAHAHAHA, I LOVE THAT!!!!! CLASSIC!!!!! XD I was watching your other video where you demonstrated hammock sizes using the 14-inch piece of cloth and a condom. I really enjoyed that video and watched it three times. That is a BRILLIANT way of illustrating things. Then in this video you break out the little cloths again to demonstrate things, and it really helps immensely. It's really helped me to decide on the size of hammock I want to go for. I'm 5'10, medium build, and I have to be a weight weenie as I'm weak with illness but still want to do some hiking. The other week I went out hiking and camping for the first time with a 9 kg pack and it was too much. So while I want a light hammock, I still want it to be large enough that I'm comfortable. Which really means I will have to spend $100 on a hammock, I can't get away with a $30 job with my requirements. Having said that, there is this Sea to Summit UL hammock which is a larger size, but still acceptably light. It is 3m x 1.9m, and weighs 450 grams. Not bad enough? However I didn't know about this asymmetrical hammock design, so I should look into that situation first before deciding on anything. But for my size, that 3m x 1.9m hammock would really be comfie don't you think? Before that, I was looking at the Grand Trunk Nano-7 as it's only 209 grams, however I have decided that at 9ft x 4ft, it's just too small and uncomfortable. It may be alright for a weekend here or there, but I'm planning to spend lots of time in my new hammock, using it as often as I'd use a bed a lot of the time. Btw you know how sometimes someone reminds you of an actor? Well you remind me of an actor, I thought it immediately upon seeing you on your other video. You're not exactly like him, but you are a bit. Enough that I could say you come from the same star, so to speak. Ah just trying to remember what movie I know him from, I don't even know his name, I'm not big on actor's names. Bare with me for a sec while I think..... YES!!!!! He is that guy from " The Truman Show", he was Truman's best friend. Remember? He was "In on it", he was a paid under-cover actor, paid to pretend to be Truman's best friend. I'll look his name up, just bare with me another sec.... Here we go, "Noah Emmerich". He played "Marlon" in The Truman Show. TALK ABOUT OFF-TOPIC!!!!! He's a pretty cool guy, as are you ;)

Thanks for a great response. I wonder sometimes with my explanations and I am happy I reached at least one person. Sorry to hear about your predicament. I do make hammocks from time to time and would be happy to work with you on one. I think we could get the hammock and suspension down pretty light without sacrificing comfort. I also appreciate the actor stuff. I enjoy making videos and it helps to know I have friends out there. Let me know, Bruce

Ah what a pity, believe it or not we're ONE DAY too late. Yesterday I ordered my very first hammock from Simply Light Designs. If I had of got this post before that time I would have done that. When I was talking about Sea to Summit, I hadn't yet heard of Cottage vendors who make better hammocks than the popular commercial jobs. And some of them do customized ones too, such as the one I just got. I'm now on Hammock Forums and that's where a lot of my education on hammock choices began. So yesterday I completed an order for a 12 ft by 5.5 ft Tree Runner from Simply Light Designs. For suspension I'm going with a lighweight carabiner and 7/64 Amsteel rope with light webbing for suspension. The hammock is a Single-Layer of 1.6oz ripstop, so a combo of lightweight and durable enough for my weight. It was a simple style which I wanted for my first hammock, and the right price for my first hammock at $60 USD (I'm Australian). That's $60 just for the hammock and after the suspension it came to $86. Then shipping to Australia was $30, so I paid a total of $116 US for the hammock, suspension and International shipping. I really appreciate your offer and will keep you bookmarked in case I need another (custom) hammock. By the way I was helped by another of your videos yesterday as I wanted to know if I could get away with purchasing simple webbing for the trees and just tie a knot instead of purchases straps with a sewn loop which is more expensive. So that video showed me I could use a knot in that situation and how to do the knot and save a little money at the same time. Thank you! One more interesting thing I heard about today is one bloke uses mule tape as webbing for the trees, which I think might be even lighter.

@naturecallsoutdoors
@naturecallsoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was having a hard time getting an explanation even from the company so I was glad to finally pick one up. This model they depend on an internal mat for insulation, which I did and I hate really, so I won't be doing that. There is a company 2QZQ that does zipper mods on these so you can then use a regular underquilt. I will do that, but I will not lose the bottom entry. JacksRBetter makes a corresponding down UQ that utilizes the tie outs and has a slit that velcros perfectly to the hammock which is what I will probably do.

The Hennessy has a pad like the windshield pad and you put it down inside on this model and wrestle with it like any other hammock. JacksRBetter makes a neat down underquilt that utilizes the pull outs and has a corresponding slit that you velcro the two together. Will probably go that route with this as I hate the whole pad thing.
@Nerding4Nature
@Nerding4Nature 7 жыл бұрын
I used a regular pad under it for years. Now I use a windshield pad. As Bruce mentioned, they do sell one specifically for the hammock, but the windshield pad was cheaper. I've slept like that down to -5 C in a -7 C sleeping bag without an under quilt. It's not a great setup for getting up in the middle of the night to pee though.

I started with a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe with the hex tarp. Added a set of quilts from JacksR Better. Quickly changed out the suspension to whoopie slings with some Dutch clips. Then I replaced the tarp with a cuben fiber one with doors (I added pole pockets from zpacks to put it in porch mode easily). The screen was bothering me when I didn't need it, and the bottom entry was a bit of a bother, so I had 2QZQ add zippers (which also makes it easier to cook from the hammock). So do I still have a Hennessy or have I changed it too much now? I still like the asym shape.
@FlashGeiger
@FlashGeiger 7 жыл бұрын
I recommend not clipping the tarp to the suspension since sitting in the hammock will probably slacken your tarp. I tie the tarp to the tree separately with some lash-it and a dutchware hook-system. Plus, in the rain I can put it up first then fiddle around with my hammock etc under cover.
@naturecallsoutdoors
@naturecallsoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
That is all great information. Did you do the UQ that matched the bottom entry? The tarp config makes sense, but sure love the super shelter aspect. May have to try it out a little different ways. I am used to longer hammocks and a lot more sag. Have you ever messed with the ridgeline?
@FlashGeiger
@FlashGeiger 7 жыл бұрын
I do have the uq designed for the hennessy... I think it's called the nest. The top quilt i use is the sniveller which can be used in a poncho like way to stay warm in camp. I also got a colder temp top quilt called the old rag mountain or something like that. All their quilts can be used top or under, so when cold I can put the nest and sniveller both under and the thicker quilt on top. i never use the bottom entry, but it's still there. I haven't yet played with the sag as I'm happy with it. I would like to be able to disconnect the ridgeline when lounging and may as well add adjust-ability when i get around to that.

I know I'm a little late to the party but I can say this has been the best tent I've ever owned. Not only has it been the most comfortable to sleep in but I've only ever gotten any water coming in once(it was user error, not the tent's fault) I just trust it to perform every time(I've brought it with me on camping trips as a backup and ended up using it instead of the new $500 solo tent). I've been using the same one for 10+ years, just bought a second one with a larger fly. I will add though in cool weather camping you need to figure out a way to keep a mat under your body since a hammock will allow cool air to flow around you.

I started out with the Hennessy Safari Deluxe Hammock and after several years graduated to the Clark Tropical and finally the Warbonnet Blackbird. The reason was that mosquitoes could and would bite me threw the bottom of my old Hennessy hammock. The Clark along with the Warbonnet are totally mosquito proof with the bottom material and the top bug netting. I have camped in our Florida swamps where the mosquitoes were so thick at night it looked like someone was shaking a pepper mill outside the hammock. I never had a single bite while in either hammock. I understand Tom Hennessy is now making some of his hammocks bottom material mosquito proof. I have not had the pleasure of using one of Tom's new ones.

Great succession of hammocks. I am still saving for the two you have...plus all the others. Up where I hang you always have an underquilt attached so no bites, but I am sure down in Florida you can go without.

Tim , I was in my Clark just enjoying life when my partner has this hissing sound coming from the direction of his hammock. He was spraying the bottom of his Hennessy with repellent ( deet ) to stop the mosquitoes ( swamp Angles ) from biting him during the night. I treat all my clothing with permethrin before going on a trip , it stops the ticks from getting a free meal.

Nature Calls Backpacking.... A quick explanation for you of the two hammocks in question.... The Clark Tropical I have ( mine is an older model ) has pockets on the outside for storage. The hammock comes with a nice rain fly and on mine it can be closed over the hammock to form a cocoon in really bad weather.You have to sleep straight along the ridge line. There are two side zippers so you can enter and exit from either side. They have the new ones listed in the military Hammocks section as Tropical Ultra. The Blackbird will remind you of the Hennessy because there are two bungee cords , one on each side you can spread the hammock out with creating more space inside it. You sleep on the diagonal since the incorporated a foot box out of the right side. Plus there is a extended shelf on the upper right side for small items to be placed in. Rain flys are extra sincet does not come with a rain fly. I used a silnylon 12 x 12 I had from McCat ( outdoor equipment supplier ) for a long time and then switched to a 11 x 11 cuben fiber from Hammock Gear. The blackbird has one side zipper for entry and exit.

I guess it depends on how risky you are willing to go. The Explorer is made of a much stouter cloth, but you gain some weight. If you had to go to ground with it the Explorer would be perfect. I am pretty trusting of lighter fabric and am not easy on it and think the Expedition will do fine. But I have pushed hammocks to the breaking point too. Mainly just being too hard, or putting my 100lb dog in it with me. Or kicking around with my boots. I weight 220 and have confidence in this model. But if you were not going into the back country, like a drive in situation I would go for the heavier model.
