A fast, coordinated response kept a surging brush fire from damaging or destroying at least four homes near New Market and Messer roads in eastern Henrico County on June 24.
Firefighters began arriving on scene at 5:18 p.m., two minutes after the initial 911 call. Crews contained the blaze in just over an hour, limiting the damage to 75 acres of agricultural fields plus sections of fence, trees, a shed and a garage.
“Seconds made a difference for this response,” Fire Chief Jackson Baynard told the Board of Supervisors.
