To honor the life and legacy of Henrietta Lacks, this video highlights her impact on biomedical research and the efforts of Johns Hopkins Medicine to pay homage to her legacy. Learn more at: www.hopkinsmedicine.org/henrie...
Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman who underwent treatment for an aggressive form of cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951. Despite receiving a high standard of medical treatment, Mrs. Lacks ultimately succumbed to this cancer at the young age of 31. However, her extraordinary cells-called “HeLa” from the first two letters of her first and last names-continued to reproduce in the laboratory. This was the first time in history that a human cell line was able to be reproduced in a laboratory setting; and it gave medical researchers the opportunity to improve the human condition by allowing them to better understand, treat, and prevent a wide range of diseases, including the development of the polio vaccine, cancer treatment protocols, AIDS research, and much more.

My science teacher never told us about this! It is so sad that WE never know about the pertinent things that truly affect us. Yea, they didn't tell the universe, but the family should have been told and compensated. that was done with intention. So many time Black people have contributed to this earth with no recognition. Yet blacks are still ostracized. Just like Tuskegee Airmen horrible study.

As others have said, if you want to honor her, pay her family what is owed to them. A lot of money has been made by drug companies and hospitals based on research from those cells and her family should be compensated for the assault on their grandmother. And yes, when you take someone's cells without their knowledge or consent, it is an assault and deserves recompense.

Being part of her treatment at John Hopkins , I don't think they are legally required to pay her but her family should be well compensated because of the Fantastic outcome no. There is no reason why the family is not perpetually compensated it would not be financially unreasonable or financially devastating to the university or government. They throw billions at foreign governments why not just give them millions and acknowledge the contribution.

@Kathybates1751 Your comment is the one that is absolutely ridiculous. Nothing in life is free. These scientists made trillions from these cells (property that was not theirs). How can you patent Hela cells or any medication that came from Hela calls, when you don't own the cells? So, yes, I think the family is definitely owed billions.
