I would never consider becoming Thoreau's disciple, but I would love to be his friend.

I've just started reading the book and I am about 35 pages down.those 35 pages I've read couple of times and I only understood it 25%. And I am already liking it.i am gonna have to read it at least 10 times to get the whole meaning of it and I am up for it.

Good overview. Walden is an important American book that is timeless, so far. The U.S. had been described as a "melting pot" and lately, a "salad". An important question - is there any common thread in the American culture? Walden is a good guidebook about what we all share as ideals. Or perhaps, what we all SHOULD share and what might be actually great about this country after all. Just shouting "We're number one" will not do. Walden speaks to the present in America despite being written some time ago. Timeless, and wonderful. My favorite book - thus I probably not get along very well with Thoreau - he would be wondering what "I" thought and was doing - and why.

I like your analysis, however, I would have liked some quotations to nail it down a little. i find it's a bit too vague the way it is

Yes ok, but doesn’t this really highlight Walden’s magic of enabling the reader to experience their own journey. For me Thoreau is introducing his philosophy of solitude and aloneness yet still enjoying the company of visitors and occasional visits to the local village for mainly gossip.
