I had been impressed by a song recorded by the Wolfe Tones called Henry Joy. In searching for information about the man, I was led to a song called Henry Joy McCracken - Faithful ton the Last, sung by Stiofan, a singer I'd never heard of. I hope you will indulge me for the bits of information I pulled from McCracken's biography in Wikipedia. I thought his middle name Joy was a rather odd one until I read that his father's name was Captain John McCracken, but his mother's name was Ann Joy. What else was mentioned that in June 1795 that he met up with a fellow named Theobald Wolfe Tone. I bring this up because the song Henry Joy was performed by an Irish group I enjoy called the Wolfe Tones. I was not surprised to read that when the group formed in 1963, they took their name from that gentleman. Henry Joy was hanged on July 17, 1768, at the age of 30. Finally, the title Faithful to the Last, was a quote by Jemmy Hope who had survived 1798 and his attempt to renew the insurrection in 1803. He said, "When all our leaders deserted us, Henry Joy McCracken stood alone faithful to the last. H led the forlorn hope of the cause." Oh, dear. Those words, forlorn hope, were used in connection with the Donner Party. In 1846, in California, U.S., "15 of the surviving emigrants set out on snowshoes in a desperate attempt to reach a settlement 100 miles away and find help. After enduring punishing physical, mental and emotional hardship, only seven survived. The rest met a terrible fate. Together, this brave group became known as the Forlorn Hope." I have to wonder if this group got its name from the 1803 group.
