The Rondeau from the incidental music (Z570) that Henry Purcell composed for the play Abdelazer, or the Moor's Revenge.

One of Purcell’s last works, the Abdelazer was staged in 1695, the year of Purcell's death, and the text of the play was written Aphra Behn. The Rondeau’s place in history was assured when the composer Benjamin Britten chose it for his Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra: Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell (1946). After Purcell's death, his wife Frances gathered much of his unpublished works, and these were printed as “A collection of ayres, compos'd for the theatre and upon other occasions.”

When I was little, this was the theme for the afternoon drive-time program on our local classical-music station, so I called it “Daddy’s office music” because it played when he was coming home from work. Thanks for bringing up that memory - and for a glorious performance.

A wonderful rendition with great acoustics. Also, the tempo was comfortable, not hurried, as is often the case in many contemporary baroque performances.

I've been completely obsessed with this piece (and Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra) ever since I heard them for the first time in my music's classroom, about 12 years ago, when I was just 10 or 11 years old. I must have heard hundreds of pieces in those 2 years of musical education in school, but these 2 pieces really engraved themselves in my mind.

I liked this as a child when it was the theme tune to a BBC costume drama called "The First Churchills" about the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. (That gives my age away!) This is a really good setting of it.

I remember watching "The First Churchills" as a child on our PBS station in the US (BBC import) - I wish the BBC would do a 2021 update of "The First Churchills" - I'm sure it would be an international sensation as the first one was.

Yes, I remember the closing credits for each episode of "The First Churchills" playing this piece. I didn't see it on Masterpiece Theater when it was first shown (1971), but on the Tenth Anniversary special repeat.

@@NinjaToe Quite right. Pride and Prejudice 1813.www.janeausten.org/jane-austen-books.asp. This music had been forgotten by then. as it was written for an opera 1676 Abdelazer or the Moors Revenge ,Dryden. It seems odd to use it as a dance.

@@mavisemberson8737 Despite this tune originating in an earlier period, it corresponds to the old stately 3/2 hornpipe that was just passing out of use at the time of Pride and Prejudice, the sort of thing that would have been passé and forgotten in fashionable London, but might still have been danced out in the country.

Most performances of this that I have heard in the past are very dry. This has a joyous emotional tone. The quality of playing is absolutely amazing.

This sing featured in my 2018 gcse music exam. Even though it was only two years ago it is mental how music just encapsulates specific memories. Its like whenever I hear this it just throws me back into my music exam as if everything I have done since that exam was just a dream. When I listen to this I tend to remember specific aspects of my life back in 2018 that I cant without listening. The power of music is very real.
