Henry Rollins' advice on discipline, self-reliance, and overcoming obstacles.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HENRY ROLLINS:
Henry Rollins is an American singer-songwriter, spoken word artist, writer, comedian, publisher, actor, and radio DJ. After performing for the short-lived Washington D.C.-based band State of Alert in 1980, Rollins fronted the California hardcore punk band Black Flag from August 1981 until mid-1986. Following the band's breakup, Rollins soon established the record label and publishing company 2.13.61 to release his spoken word albums, as well as forming the Rollins Band, which toured with a number of lineups from 1987 until 2003, and during 2006. Since Black Flag, Rollins has embarked on projects covering a variety of media. He has hosted numerous radio shows, such as Harmony in My Head on Indie 103, and television shows such as The Henry Rollins Show, MTV's 120 Minutes, and Jackass. He had a recurring dramatic role in the second season of Sons of Anarchy and has also had roles in several films. Rollins has also campaigned for various political causes in the United States, including promoting LGBT rights, World Hunger Relief, and an end to war in particular, and tours overseas with the United Service Organizations to entertain American troops.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Henry Rollins: Young person, you’ll find in your life that sometimes your great ambitions will be momentarily stymied, thwarted, marginalized by those who were perhaps luckier, come from money, where more doors opened, where college was a given--it was not a student loan; it was something that Dad paid for--to where an ease and confidence in life was almost a birthright, where for you it was a very hard climb. Okay, that happens all the time. Some of the greatest Americans, some of the greatest thinkers, artists, architects, politicians and other movers, shakers and creators all over the world have come from very meager beginnings like my favorite American Abraham Lincoln. And so, just because you come from nothing you must not let that be something that holds you back.
And you will encounter people who never have to pay in full. They get to wreck the room and never have to clean it. They can get all the way through high school and never understand where a dollar comes from because they just get it given to them. I went to school with guys like that. You’ve had presidents like that. You’ve had friends like that and you’ve suffered.
Your humility has been tried. Your patience has been tried. Your resolve and your ambition has been tried. You cannot let these people make you feel that you have in any way been dwarfed or out classed. You must really go for your own and realize how short life is. You got what you got, so you have to make the most of it. You really can’t spend a whole lot of time worrying about his. You really have to go for your own. If you have an idea of what you want to do in your future, you must go at it with almost monastic obsession be it music, the ballet or just a basic degree. You have to go at it single-mindedly and let nothing get in your way. And that’s why you’re young. That’s why you can survive on no sleep, Top Ramen noodles and dental floss and still look good. And take advantage of that great energy you have, the fact that you can do an all-nighter.
All the people you admire, from Mohamed Ali to any politician, they work and work and work. A guy like Bill Clinton, not everyone’s favorite, Rhodes Scholar, he’s smart for a reason. Got a great mind, but he sat and he shoved a whole bunch of information in there and he learned how to connect the dots. And so can you. Your president right now is a man who got where he is through very hard work and scholarships, mainly hard work and application and discipline. If these people can do it, why not you?
It is very, very easy, though, to feel smaller, to feel less than when you see people with an advantage, walk where you struggle, who have ease of motion where you are constricted. It can be a real shot to your morale. It can be flummoxing to a degree where you’re almost paralytic. You got to keep picking yourself up and reaching for it. And that’s the long and short of it because if you don’t it won’t get done.

Jonathan Fowler & Elizabeth Rodd

I grew up rich, but with abusive parents who hit me and yelled at me and sabotaged my efforts at independence, and mocked me and ridiculed me every moment they could, and told me, "you made me do this because you don't respect me enough," touched me inappropriately and told me, "Stop fighting and just go with it," because it made them feel in control. Rich does not always equal better off. They made life not worth living.

I never considered Henry a second class person, ever. I know his music since the 80s, he always stood for the total winner for all of us in Germany. Everybody I knew adored him and wished to be as driven, dedicated and courageous as he has always been. People who think they have one up on others because of wealth have their heads up their asses. True wealth is within us.

I see so much of myself in him. people listen selectively to things that interest them. Even though I came from an upper middle class family, Henry Rollins' mentalities and insights inspire me to work harder and work my ass off to an almost insanity-fueled drive. If you want to achieve something, you can do it, but you have to put in the fucking work to earn your achievements.

chriscauldemusic Or is it because they realise , that all advise is useless ? You know I have met in my life hundreds of people who think advice given by older successful people has a value, it does not, it's biblical shit . Shakespeare tried to point this out in a scene in Hamlet , but thousands of people take it serious , even some actors , well he was joking extracting the old urine . And trying to point out that we are all victims of circumstance . { That is not advice it is a fact}

Roland Hawken I've been a fan of Rollins since his Black Flag days and because I see him as a role model of mine I find his advice inspiring. I don't consider myself a victim of circumstance so much as a fluid being with some choice in how I interpret my world and myself. Also sorry to say that stating something is a fact certainly does not make it so.

Well, not really. The problem is a lot of people aren’t honest with themselves about being ready to parent. When I was in my mid-20s I was lucky enough to be honest with myself that I wasn’t emotionally/psychologically/financially ready, and that’s why I chose to have an abortion with an ex because I didn’t want to ruin a kid’s life because I sincerely wasn’t ready to be a parent. Now I’m 41 years old and I like to think that maybe in the coming few years that opportunity might present itself to me. I feel a lot more ready now. Personally I believe that parents should be licensed and take something like a written DMV driver’s license exam to be parents. The problem is too many people who become parents don’t know that to be good parents they sometimes have to make sacrifices and COMPROMISE! Everybody has to compromise: Go get a boyfriend/girlfriend and ONLY do with them stuff you wanna do. Sorry that’s not gonna last long…. Think about Jeff Bezos who felt “Sure I can exploit all these Amazon warehouse workers and delivery drivers!” Well, karma came back to him. Now he realizes he has to make compromises when workers are talking about inhumane conditions and unionizing. … Parents have to compromise so their kids can be happy and healthy. So, it’s not very black and white like that. There are just a lot of people out there who have problems they haven’t worked out and pass down their struggles on their kids.

Looking back at my relatively short life here (25yrs), there were times when I lasered my thoughts and life around a goal that seemed unattainable, but I felt that it would work out in my favor, and a lot of times it did as a result of tenacity. Sometimes, you've just got to be dead focused on what's ahead instead of sitting around and licking your wounds. Otherwise, you'll miss the wide open windows that allow you to be one step closer to your goals.

There are people who have an absence of personality, responsibility, and character due to wealth. There are those who have the same from poverty, entitlement works best at the extremes. We have removed the courses that should be mandatory in schools, arts/music, woodworking, auto shop, etc. were all the courses that removed entitlement. Bring them back.

+steven martin That's a very interesting point, as within my close circle at university, I was from the most ordinary economic background, and most of my friends were paid through college whereas I was on a scholarship. My friends virtually all worked harder than me, and got better grades (I did OK but not as well as them) because they all had potentially irate parents to answer to, if they screwed up, whereas I didn't. So it's not quite as simple as Henry, who didn't finish college, btw, likes to make it sound, as you point out.

I have suffered, I have struggled, I have lost everyone I have ever cared about. I live in constant pain. Despite these emotional and physical struggles I am still alive. I still fight. If anything, the event that made me grow up practically overnight has made it so I can endure anything. Nothing else could put me into a state of shock. No ones anger, malice or destructive nature can touch me or even phase me. I am better for my torment and growing ever stronger from it.

Thanks for the message henry. I am about your age and have tried to instill the same message to my children in young people around me

i totally agree. the contributions and setting a bar for myself and being able to defend myself in conversation makes me smug. hate the winner from the bench
