Hats off, Ladies & Gentlemen, the great Tasso Janopoulo at the piano !) An Egyptian pianist of Greek descent, and a naturalised French citizen (16 October 1897 in Alexandria - 1970 in Paris), he collaborated with some of the greatest musicians, such as Henryk Szeryng, Jacques Thibaud, Paul Tortelier, Pierre Fournier, Ninon Vallin , and--drumroll.... Eugene Ysaye-- as a piano partner! Orphaned as a young child, he played the piano in brasseries, later on traveling to Belgium to study with Arthur De Greef while continuing to earn his living playing. Presented to Eugene Ysaye by Greef, he became the violinist's accompanist. In 1923 in Brussells he met certain Jacques Thibaud , touring with him that year, and continuing his collaboration until Thibaud's death in 1953. Later he accompanied other major violinists (Milstein, Menuhin, Francescatti, Szeryng) and singers (Flagstad, Vallin).

The phrasing is out of this world, but let’s cheer the accompanist too. Masterful from both musicians

I actually found the tempi overwrought (either dragged out too slow mid-phrase, or rushed-the last two movements were frenetic). The pianist’s playing suffers on the these two movements, too, missing one entrance entirely.

Szeryng created such great sound with seemingly minimal effort.

No minimal effort…..maximal effort…he practised the whole day, his whole life…. There is not such a thing as „minimal effort“ on violin playing. It is always very very very very hard work during many many many years. Dont lie to children.

@@leonardoiglesias2394 of course no doubt there is huuuge effort, but before his performance. He is talking about this absolute moment, he doesn't try as much and don't really thinks too much about how to get a big sound

On #5 -- Szeryng gave the pianist a run for the money -- and the pianist dug in to hold on to the insane rhythm. Absolutely wonderful to watch!

Best performance of this piece i ever heard! Szeryng and the pianist in total symbiosis with Bartók.

The original version was among the first works by Bartok that I learned. This work really gravitates toward this version. Szeryng pushes it to the edge of exaggeration, but he convinces. A great work. Everyone knows that.

The second movement brings tears to my eyes every time.I fucking WEEP for humanity...Its beauty...its sadness....its wonderful being alive and able to feel...to Love...to fight....to scream at the firmament to the gods "PLEASE HELP US TO GET IT TOGETHER DOWN HERE AND STOP LAUGHING AT US!!!"

I get you. I don't believe that God is laughing at us, I believe that he sees our pain and will one day return to the earth and bring redemption with him. All of humanity's pain, suffering, and sadness will be no more and we will live on the earth in perfect peace with God and one another. So, the point is, THERE IS HOPE!

Try to listen to this as a conversation, leave your perfection behind and feel the humanly connection between two person... Rushing or not, no one is a running mashine/metronome and shouldn’t be also... The comments here shows how we got so blind to emotions and beauty in the classical music community. Everything is not about perfection or repeated interpretations.

What an entertaining performance! I really liked Szeryng's "tempo markings are for pussies" phrasing, particularly in the 3rd and 4th dances, as well as the "what's the tempo?" guessing game the performers played in the last dance. Thanks for posting this video.

Yes, this video is better. Found the older edition about two years ago. You also included the name of the violinist with whom I wasn't familiar. But who's the pianist? I studied piano and clarinet, and played these Romanian Dances on both instruments. The dances are one of my favorite works of Bartók and of any music, and inspired me to go into ethic music along with the music of Zoltan Kodaly, Katchaturian and many others. I'm of Central European and Balkan ancestry so the music is in my body and soul all the time. This is a great recording of great music by a great composer performed by a great artist who is new to me. I'm sure the program is vintage and been around for years, but from my point of view, it's just out. Thank you for sharing this performance and artist. Sincerely, Phillip Jones in Downey, California
