As a National Geographic photographer told me some years ago - it’s not a “point and shoot” it’s an “aim and create” camera. Composition matters!

I totally get it. I have an iphone 15 and yes , the camera is great but I don't have any fun using it. Couple months ago I got me a Lumix LX5, beautiful and classy in chrome and white. Zeiss f2 lens, 10mpxl CCD sensor, Raw files, manual, aperture priority ect, I love this camera, I love taking pictures with it! I got my Granddaughter (6yrs) a Lumix Tz5 so she can have a camera of her own like Grandpas..

Ahhh Sunderland Point. My Dad used to go there to get worms off the beach as fishing bait. He nearly didn’t come home coz of the bore tide. As the cal on sounded my uncle and him decided to stay out a few more minutes, and then they heard the roar of the tide and had to drop everything and sprint back to shore.

I frequently use the pocket rocket 1 inch sensor Sony RX100VII (24-200) and RX100VA (24-70 f1.8-2.8), its very surprising how good IQ is! even the dynamic range is superb!! and during daytime, IQ isn't as far off full frame as you might think!

In the same series as your Powershot G9X I've got my Powershot G5X Mark II, and it's an amazing little device for all the same reasons. It's got a little bit more of a zoom at 24-120mm and has an EVF, but whether I need a second body to back up my DSLR (just in case!) or I'm going to a concert where DSLR's aren't allowed, or I'm just headed out for a simple hike, it's perfect. The manufacturers really need to bring these things back into production, and maybe even consider a better AF for faster action, similar to a miniature R5.

Great video Henry, I bought an RX100 VA six months ago. It has 28-70mm lens with a faster aperture than the later versions with 200mm lens. It works for me as you said, work what your requirements are. The portability of it was a key factor in buying it and it’s reignited my love of photography as I can just pop it in my pocket whenever I go out!

I'm still using the first iteration of the RX100. I remember how amazed I first was when I saw a quality it's capable of. Especially compared to my DSLR back then. Poor old D50 had 6 MP, and RX100 pictures downscaled to the same resolution blew me away. It's still going strong after all those years, and while its leather case shows heavy signs of use, the camera itself isn't giving up and is still very, very capable. Definitely worth recommending!

In 2015, I went up snowdon with my husband, sister in law an my 3 kids aged 9, 8 and 3 at the time, I had my nikon d3100, which I had stupidly put a 55-200 lens on, everything was too close, I didn't know about panos and stitching software back them, I also had a nikon point and shoot, it was quite an advanced little camera, but I got way better pics with that, as we had to keep moving..... We made it to the summit, all of us including my 3 year old. But my best pics were from my point and shoot, wasn't as confident with a dslr as I am now

Morning Henry, I have a little Sony A6300, which I then converted to Infrared. My main criteria for acquiring an IR camera was that it should be small, light, and fit easily into my jacket pocket. It's perfect for what I need, but I must admit I would like a slightly longer reach lens than the 16-50mm that came with it. I would say that something from the A6000 range may be worth checking out for your travel requirements, but possibly a newer model than my A6300!.

I have my dads LUMIX DMC TZ35 just sat on the shelf doing nothing, it won’t be doing nothing going forward, battery being charged and it will be in my pocket on dog walks (when it’s a bit impractical to lug around my DSLR) and live the rest of the time in the car for those ad hoc moments. Leica lens, 16.1mp, 28-560mm and 20x optical zoom, madness to leave it on the shelf. Cheers Henry 👍

Definitely agree that we should bring them back. I’ve got the RX100vii that you talked about and it’s a cracking bit of kit. Even has a really good quality viewfinder. Like you, I like to get out on some long distance hikes and it’s perfect for that. Saves carrying so much weight and the image quality out the camera is very good. I got mine used as the purchase price new is quite expensive

I remember a previous time you went out with the bike to make a video and do photography and that ended up being a drama for you too Henry 🙂, I bought a Ricoh GR3x last year for those occasions where I am out somewhere but dont have my main gear with me and enjoy the challenges it brings as it's a fixed lens for one thing and another being the battery life as not as good as my main camera so it forces you to think more about what you want to shoot. Sometimes its good to mix things up and if nothing else being out with a camera is still being out with a camera enjoying the outdoors somewhere

Good the idea of having a compact point and shoot in the bag as another other option. I know I could use a mobile phone, but my old phone isn't that good and wont spend hundreds of pounds on a phone that takes great photos when I have got decent camera gear that can do that. Unlucky with that broken bike chain Henry but at least you got a run in. ps, like the "video shorts".

Agreed with point of video. I cycle a lot and prefer P&S vs phone, but phones have progressed. I have the original Sony RX100 and love it. It takes great pictures, simply. It's not weatherproof but has stood up to occasional abuse. I hang mine around my neck while cycling. (I've also used Canon P&Ss as well, more Guici than Sony and much less weatherproof. They were ruined in minimal weather - Canon has disappointed me more than once with their awful non-weather proofing. If you're going to be outdoors, eventually you're going to get caught in the rain...)

Henry! YES 100% you've got to have a good compact camera in the bag, I LOVE my Nikon Coolpix A, picked it up a few years back and use it daily, fits in my pocket, 16mp DX sensor with an epic 28mm lens. Ive shot wildlife images on it, landscapes and took it on my through hike of the Coast to Coast as my only camera. Can't agree enough about having a pocket cam in the bag, so much better than always resorting to an iPhone!

Nice one Henry! Always good to see a professional photographer proving that you can get excellent images even with a compact camera. A couple of years ago I got a Panasonic TZ200 (1in sensor, 15x optical zoom) secondhand from MPB and a hard shell case and it's my everyday carry camera, great for business trips with just hand luggage, bike rides, the daily commute to the office and so much fun to use. Too many people overlook the compact and just go straight to SLRs, when you can get so much bang for your buck with a compact! And macro mode.. 😅

Love this Henry! You show what you can achieve with quite basic equipment. Also, totally agree about preference of using some sort of camera V mobile 'phone. I feel exactly the same as the 'feel' of any camera in my hand is far more satisfying than a 'phone! Also love your 'struggles' with technology! First a broken chain and then cancelling your tracker mid-run! Have frequently suffered similar; punctures on the bike (when as far away from home/car as possible on a circular ride!) and then switching off tracking system so only registering 2Km instead of 20! A kindred spirit!!

I use a Lumix TZ100 compact when i go backpacking, even my MFT camera weighs too much for that! But with a 1 inch sensor and 25-250 FFE f2.8 zoom the Lumix is great. I've fitted a filter mount so I can mount a polarizer, Variable ND or lens hood. It just feels so much better than using my phone and the 20MP raw files are better too. I also use PictureThis, it costs about £30/year but money well spent for me.

What a great video !! Back in film days my pocket/p+s camera was an Olympus MJU (35mm lens) . Was often used while photographing weddings because people played in front of a little camera . Was also a great little press camera ---- just a great little camera to have all the time actually. Thank you for taking your followers back to the basics ; however it just as good to leave ALL the gear at home, or at least in the car and just use the one camera with one standard fixed focal length lens equal to around 50mm (ff) . Believe me , it's very liberating (as I read and lost somewhere online). Of course , I'm an oldish bloke who started out with a ''come with the camera'' 50mm lens on a film camera. 50 years later I often still go back to basics just to re-learn (enjoy) basic photography with a 20mm (equal 40mm FF) on an Olympus Em1 Mk2 . (Perhaps more video themes to consider ;) A little P&S is great for learning composition. So good one Henry! Too many (especially when learning) seem still too wrapped up with bloody gear and imo ''Too much gear = confusion = frustration = lost of interest''. ''I can never to get every photo I might see no mater how much gear and focal length I carry'' “some of my better photos just happened because I had a fast to use a P&S camera in my pocket” (no ; a phone is not the same imo ---- but yeah , I'm an old fart 😂

I've been trying to find a 'running' camera for a while now... I had a canon G5x which was nice and small but I was worried about it getting damaged bouncing around in my belt pack. Have also tried my Sony a6x00 in a backpack and an om-5, both a bit too big for the occasional photo opportunity whilst running out in the countryside. Am still looking for the best option, maybe a fixed lens compact - I feel that the fewer moving parts the better.

I always carry a camera when I run ( ricoh gr3 or canon s95). Then I plan my runs to find good images. The whole process is reciprocal. I see it as a way of scouting and also improving my observation; if you can spot images and compositions whilst running I think you are doing well! I've ended up with some of my favorite images this way. One of the best reasons to carry a compact camera is to give you more opportunities to practice photography.

There are times when carrying a condiserable amount of gear is impractical, not possible. I am not one to use my gear too much in the wet anyway, I have a Sigma 60-600mm lens which as always, sucks in air and therefore dust, when extended to full reach, it would draw in the moisture too. Recently, for those times when it's really hammering down or I haven't got anything else with me, I purchased a Panasonic LUMIX DC-FT7. It's a limited thing, but it's one of the only tough cameras that has a viewfinder. I can carry it almost anywhere I go without too much worry. Great video Mr Turner, although the lycra, really?? lol.

Hi Henry. I have a similar camera about the same vintage, but it's an Olympus. I use semi auto functions too. I have a little carry bag that it sits on my belt on the side, easy access and out of the way. For the flower, I would go through the scene menu and select the macro icon... Works a treat. Great resolution and bold colour that sometimes I have to tone down in post. I like the challenge of street photography as well with this little proper camera... I like the tactile feel too. By the way, you were channeling James Popsys there, take that as a genuine compliment... As you say... Quality, man!

Great video, smashing pics of the boats. You are cursed when it comes to bikes 😂. Considering the balancing act you did whilst cycling, attenpt a unicycle next time 😂

You’ll love the Sony RX100. I had the original and then the mark iii. Superb 1inch sensors. Mine was stolen 😢 GOOD VIDEO AS USUAL.

I’d agree Henry I’ve a 13mini but still prefer my Fuji X20 not quite as small as your Canon but with f2.0 28mm to 112 mm and macro lense touching the the subject way better than the iPhone mini ps wish I could still go running. Enjoy 😊😎👌☕️pps really enjoyed this vid thanks Henry

My first camera was a canon compact. Unfortunately I didn't know much about what I was buying and it doesn't take Raw. Despite that when I go on international business trips I keep it in my bag and I got some great photos in India. If I use Topaz to convert the Jpeg to a DNG I can edit without creating artefacts, even though highlights and shadows cannot be recovered. Its also brilliant for street photography. Before the days of smart phones I took some great photos in Thailand and China backpacking. it was a 3MP camera and the A4 prints are amazing.

In 60 years of cycling, I've never broken a chain. I'm thinking about picking up one of the Ricoh GRs. I did just get a new phone, so maybe I don't need a compact camera. I haven't really tried using the camera in the new phone.

Change the screen brightness to sunny weather and check out the histogram to see if you’re under or overexposed.

Amateurs use telephones held sideways to take images. Forget any future for snap and shoot cameras.

I’m sorry, but I don’t get people saying iPhone photos are great. Maybe iPhone pro but also have a iPhone 13 and the camera is garbage. If you take a photo and then marginally zoom or crop it’s a pixelated mess. Completely unusable. Bought a Panasonic gm1 with a 16mp and 14mm lens - tiny and quality is 100x better. Don’t fall for the hype that an iPhone is the only camera you need

I think that was Hawthorn, not Dewberry - could be wrong though. Compact cameras suck, I'd rather just use my phone.

Interestingly, I have a Nikon S9900 compact point and shoot. Had it a good while now, and I rob bight it coz it had 1080p filming capability but also because I wanted to get into photography. Being honest, I love what you do with the ‘big lads camera’ but all that iso, shutter speed, aperture stuff just confuses the hell out of me. Not to mention what lens to use and when. My friend gave me a Sony DSLR and I’ve used it once with him, but it totally confused me. I then went and bought a Nikon Coolpix P1000 because of its zoom, and 4K recording for my KZfaq. But again, it was so confusing to use, not to mention enormous and heavy. But a quality camera nonetheless but I got rid of it quick as it was truly too big to take out to do solo golf vlogs. Such a shame. I’ve thought about selling S9900 but cannot get a valuation of any of the major camera trade-in companies, which is odd. So based on this here vlog, I’m gonna keep it and start using it again for photography. Cheers pal
