@@gringopablo Shakira sounds nothing like them since her music has more of a Latin American sound to it, her sound had more in common with Gloria Estefan (who co-wrote Shakira's songs) than Alanis or No Doubt. Shakira released her first album in 1991at the age of 13 but all her albums were Spanish until 2001, No Doubts first album came the year after. Alanis is different as her career had two phases teen pop and Jagged Little Pill.

"vibrato" is the word you were looking for, meaning modulating pitch. It's often difficult to keep a pure note perfectly in pitch, so singing long notes with vibrato helps singers keep their pitch accurate, while also sounding very dramatic and evocative.
@MikeB12800
@MikeB12800 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t see how vibrato would keep a singer in key? Seems easier to just hold a note.
@klaptongroovemaster

@@MikeB12800 It's a LOT easier to just hold the note. It's one of the reasons Stefani is as respected as she is.

vibrato is involuntary. singers using their voices is like athletes using their muscles. it doesn't matter how strong the muscle, it cannot remain flexed. the same is true for most people's voices. there are some (very few) singers who can sing with no vibrato, but for the most part, its uncontrollable.
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 2 жыл бұрын
Vibrato doesn't help you stay on pitch. It's just 2 notes extremely close in pitch sung back to back, rapidly, that ends vocal phrasings more neatly. If you're off, vibrato won't save you. You'll still be singing the wrong general notes. In fact, some singers have such huge vibrato that they sound really off pitch when they sing because the rapidly alternating notes are so far in pitch from each other. Liza Minelli is a classic example of this. Can't stand to hear her sing for this reason. And like a couple of you have said, it's easier to hold a note without vibrato than to hold one with.
@jesusetudo4569
@jesusetudo4569 2 жыл бұрын
Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins was one of the greatest at this. In their album Garlands, her vibratos were like saw teeth.

There is a big message in the song and she uses her voice perfectly in it. Sounds like she’s portrayed as innocent and fragile and being overprotected in a stereotype way . But when she hits the chorus the real her comes out saying “screw you” I’m independent and I can do this without being told how to be in life.

It's rather whiny. Also, that rule of thumb line would be based on feminist studies propaganda that it has to do with being able to beat your wife with a stick as thick as your thumb. It doesn't, Rule of Thumb comes from carpentry. The song reeks of middle class girl going to college, and being told by other middle class women (who are so down trodden being allowed to teach nonsense as college courses) how the imaginary patriarchy is horrible.
@mithroch

I always thought that too... but when you really really pay attention to the lyrics... I think she's talking more about toxic masculinity... that she feels forced to be this stereotype just to be safe and society is ok with it because it's the norm.

No Doubt hails from Orange County California. For about 10 years I lived on the same street but about 2 miles away in Anaheim that the house the band used as their home base and used the address as the mailing address for the No Doubt fan club but I didn't even live in Orange County at the same time. They named their 2nd album after that street. The name of the album was called The Beacon Street Collection because they recorded most of the music on it at that house. The house is near Disneyland, which is reportedly why they called their third album The Tragic Kingdom. Their songs Just a Girl, Spiderwebs and Don't Speak are from their 3rd album. Just a Girl comes from Gwen's own experience of getting yelled at by her father for driving home alone late one night from her boyfriend's home.

The bane of ska/punk purists everywhere, No Doubt (Gwen and the boys) were kind of a more new wavey/pop-punk version of the heavily reggae-influenced punk music of '80s/'90s Orange County. But they were HUGE! For my money, Gwen Stefani was the queen of '90s/'00s pop-punk. Hands down. For a listen of No Doubt at their most "punk", I'd highly recommend giving "Spiderwebs" or "Excuse Me Mr" a try. Or even Gwen's collabs with Sublime -- "Total Hate '95" and "Saw Red."

She sang somewhat like (and seemed heavily influenced by) Dale Bozzio from the group Missing Persons. You guys should react to some of their stuff. Dale was very influential in terms of makeup and hair styles (I would say Lady Gaga is indirectly it not directly influenced by her) but is pretty much an unknown nowadays which is a bit sad imo. Other women like Madonna and Cindy Lauper get all the credit for developing that 80s style but really I think Dale got there first.

No Doubt was her original band, they put some amazing stuff. Pop, but had this 'bite' to it that hooked you. Then she went solo, and her solo stuff is fine but different feeling to me. No Doubt always sounds better to me, but it might just be bias as that's the Gwen I remember most. I like how they use such an upbeat sound for this song, when the lyrics don't match the happy sound at all, lol.

Played this one a billion times in a cover band... good little tune. I think I have a different view of the lyrics than I did when I was playing it.

The singer is Gwen Stephani, before she went solo. This is where she started. Great stuff. Other great songs of theirs are "Don't Speak" and "Spiderwebs".

No Doubt was so popular for a while and while I didn't listen to a lot of that kind of music, I did go out and buy couple of their CDs because they really were a good band and she's a great singer. Her solo stuff came later. But they toured to sold-out crowds and everything and sold a lot of CDs.

Gwen Stefani had a huge career as part of No Doubt and she had a huge solo career! I loved her in both stages of her career! She is an amazing performer and she had many hits with the band and solo! ❤️❤️

I love the lyrics. This was before Hollaback Girl. She used to run all over the stage during concerts and climb on the metal bars to the side of the stage. She has so much energy and talent. She sings from the heart.

Entire album is perfect! Was one of my first introductions into Ska thanks to the mid 90s revival that was plastering this music everywhere and I gobbled it all up! This album was among one of those early gateways into a whole new world for me.

The lyrics in this video really make me roll my eyes now. And yet I still love it. Just a solid banger. No Doubt really had a great sound going. Also 5:30-5:50 - No Doubt and Gwen Stefani were HUGE back in the 90s. Stefani was able to transition into a successful solo career for herself because of how successful her band No Doubt was. She didn't become famous when she did Holla Back Girl. She was already massively famous at that point. She just became more famous because now she was doing stuff as a solo artist. But that solo career came from the massive success she had with No Doubt.

No Doubt started as a Ska band. Ska is like a mix of punk and reggae. They got more poppy over the years while maintaining their own sound.

Love it, thank you for checking out this one. This song is so much fun, imo. If you get a chance, you might check out the video too.. she is such a ham, it's a fun video. Edit: I think her style of singing here is sort of epitomizing alot of the singing in the nineties or early nineties.. we had a local band back then and it's hard to describe but I swear she took lessons from Gwen Stefani lol.. finding a certain place in her throat and sort of singing and yelling at the same time. I just love it. If you have not heard "Don't Speak" by No Doubt (Gwen's band)... you definitely should check that out. It is such a great song.
