I visit with Renee Nelson of the Grumpy Chicken you-pick flower farm in north Idaho. Renee started her flower farm because she worked from home by herself and wanted to develop community while getting to be outdoors enjoying her flower hobby. Her business recouped all of the input costs after just one month of operation!

I like all your flowers. I planted 400,000 zinnias and I I also planted 6 pounds of Sunflowers. None of them sold well. People around where I live must be too lazy to pick flowers. I don't have the time to take flowers anywhere to sell to. I sold the zinnias for .05 each! I sold the sunflowers for .50 each. The only ones I sold was to a local flower shop 6 miles away. My wife likes flowers and I planted them for her. I mainly grow pumpkins. I had 10 acres of them and grew 6,000 plus. Hand planted and hand picked. We sold them at a local Christmas Tree Farm. I'll plant my wife more flowers next year and if some sell that will be fine. I'd give some away to local nursing homes but they had such strict rules about visitors I did not do it.

Wonderful video. You should do a 5 min or longer ASMR tour if you ever go to a place as beautiful as that one. Just walking around up close with the camera giving a tour. With the sound of nature and what not all around. That bee basil area must have been humming. We been putting basil near the hives. This is always a blooming variety so they have food almost all year.

Last year I grew a bunch of sunflowers and fed them to the chickens and ducks. They LOVED them! I try to grow as much veggies and grains as I can for the birds to forage. This year was a bust because I was dealing with COVID during the srping early summer plantings and now I'm dealing with Long Covid issues and the fact that our temps are still in the 100's that slows me down for fall plantings.

What size opening hardware cloth did you use on the Joel S chicken tractor? If you add 1in cloth to the bottom, would it be rodent proof?
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
I don't use the Salatin chicken tractor. I use the Suscovich tractor. I have 1/2" hardware cloth on it. 1" would not be rodent proof. 1/2" is the maximum size that is still rodent proof and that isn't recommended to use on the bottom of a tractor.

They won’t produce a seed unless another sunflower containing pollen nearby somehow spread to the ones without pollen. The bees feed on the nectar/oil of the flowers since it has no pollen.

They don't know it's food. you gotta break it open to teach them. Always remember with farm animals we take them away from their mommas so young we are mom and dad and we teach them what to eat and what is food. If they can't smell it they don't figure it out. IF you ever feed nuts to young feeders. If you crack some of the nuts then feed it. They get it a lot faster. Then start cracking them their selves.
