When I first heard that song I fell in love I didn’t care what she looked like, I was listening to an angel and I would’ve given anything to be with her, hearing this song again still brings me chills and I’m 70. RIP Karen

The Carpenters Close to You is a song that just wasn't heard when it came out, it was in some strange way etched across the soul. Even today when I hear it the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

We took the Carpenters so much for granted at the time. There was so much brilliance musically, just everywhere. But the songs..and her sublime voice stayed with you. Once heard, never forgotten. Instant classics.

How to say how much I admire this man? This incredible, loving person who actually did what very few others did: not only find talented artists, (there are tons of those!), but to actually give them the break they deserved. God bless this person forever! As a songwriter that never 'made the grade', I nevertheless feel happy for those who had the good fortune the cross paths with Herb Alpert. Without him, the world would've lost some great names. Again, god bless you, Herb Alpert ❤.

@ That’s great 😃 that he can keep the ability!! Glen Campbell was doing a dueling guitar with his daughter playing the banjo when he had Alzheimer’s of all things!! He had to ask about the speakers, but his playing was phenomenal!! His voice was older, but he was still awesome!! That was his last tour.

About 7 years ago on CBS sunday morning show Herb was interviewed about his business and talking about this artist and that one! Then the Carpenters came up in the discussion and Herb started talking about them and eventually said Karen didn't realize how many people in the world loved her! What he said literally hit me in the gut! He paused for a view moments put his head down and didn't say a word as he was still emotionally affected by her passing so many years before! A touching emotional moment for Herb and for all of us who were watching television that day as we were crying watching this precious moment on tv! I think Herb Albert is a really nice man! And ANYONE WHO WATCHED THIS EPISODE ON CBS THIS MORNING WOULD AGREE!

I like how Herb said “what’s not on the radio?” because that was the magic of “Close to You”. The sound - so pure and clear ; the otherworldly vocals; the professional arrangement. AM Top 40 radio up to that point was very “foggy” for lack of a better word. The Carpenters were different, and I think pretty much ushered in a brand new decade of music: the quintessential 70s sound.

That’s the problem with music it’s controlled, look what they’re doing to country music. I don’t even recognize most of it now it’s not country. Sentimental warm tastefully done songs are obsolete, nothing but crap is shoved before us. The same guys are running the show that said, what are we gonna do with this cr@p?
