I've always liked Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue a lot, but this performance takes it to a new place I am so grateful to have experienced. My heart almost stopped at the breath-taking finally that does not appear share the arrangements of the original other performances follow to the latter. Gershwin would have been proud to hear it played this way, in I fact feel certain if he was around he would say this is how he wants everybody to play it. Everybody from the conductor to Herbie have raised what was already an amazing peace of art emotionally and physically to a greater height one, or at least I, could never have imagined. wow!!!

Herbie Hancock is so amazing, because besides all the incredible work in JAZZ, he still get to play some classical tunes this way. He doesn´t need it. In Jazz he is a genius, with dozens of Grammy awards and Oscar. But he is so incredible that even at this age he still gets better.

Actually he has a very. classical formation .:-).And he was considered a wonder child in this direction (classical piano) at a very young age.He's not doing this now in order ''to get better'';-))).What a way to see things.Funny.He just plays something he likes.And that is close to jazz music except it does not include impro.By the way ...this is not a tune.This is a symphonic work.So...now you know.

Heavy handed and stiff.... Even Lang Lang plays it better than this. And why does he still have to have the music in front of him? Herbie is not THAT old! Granted, Gershwin Rhapsody is a bit more difficult than Watermelon man but if you supposed to be talented, you should be able to learn the music you perform by heart,

He writes in his autobiography about how he hadn't learned anything like Rhapsody in Blue since he was a teenager. He had to work incredibly hard to learn this music, as he'd spent the last 50 years working exclusively in improvisation. This performance isn't meant to be classically perfect. He was the head of the LAP's jazz program, so it was a fun novelty program idea to see him and Dudamel share the stage. Genius in jazz improvisation doesn't necessarily transfer as genius in the classical tradition, so you shouldn't judge this performance by the usual standards!

I agree with randompirate on this. This is a jazz musician playing classical music. He's playing a song that has jazz nuances in it so I appreciate the gesture because you don't see many jazz pianists take this piece on.

vova47 It is just pure blasphemy. Dudamel sharing the stage with this... Dare I even say it; fool? I can't bear to watch this rendition into it's inevitable, grueling end, without feeling pure and unadulterated shared sense of shame. It is a travesty beyond belief, what this pianist does to this timeless piece of music. Unfathomable. Cannot discern whose idea this was, but Dudamel must have been absolutely trying to save the performance by any means possible. Well, he did his best. Dudamel, I meant.
