Thank you Owen for updating us on Setombe. It is ideed a very hard time for her, for you all and for all of us who love the elephants. My own heart is still weeping for Phabeni.

I can’t explain how much I love these magnificent animals. Herd carers, Adine and ALL at Herd I thank you on behalf of the Ellie’s for giving them a safe place to live and grow.

While the pain of losing a baby is obvious in Setombe, it is good to see she is not secreting through stress anymore. The healing of the Herd has commenced. I would like to write something positive after the sad week for HERD. I read somewhere that only one in 10,000 elephants are born albino. For Khanyisa, born albino, to be snared, orphaned, suffer terrible injuries to her face and neck, rescued, nurtured, and survived and thrived to a near weaned 5 y.o is nothing short of unbelievable (or miraculous if you believe in such things). In the sadness of the loss of the little bull, the life that is Khanyisa is a blessing and validates the work, the care and the pain of your animal conservation. A great thank you for all your efforts at HERD, the world appreciates what you are doing for Africa's magnificent beasts especially the majestic Elephant.

Tomorrow is Global Giving BONUS DAY and I look forward to seeing what a HUGE difference we can make for the lives and health of the HERD elephants we follow and so dearly.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Watching the elephants feeding and walking through the Bush is normally a calming experience. Just now tinged with the sense of loss everyone will be experiencing. It is good to know that Setombe appears to be accepting the absence of her little Phabeni. Thank you for providing security, love and comfort for the elephants. ❤

I just love these magnificent creatures! I know they are all feeling the loss of our sweet Phabeni but they are getting better every day. It’s so hard to lose a baby. My heart is a bit happier than it’s been since the loss of “ our” baby. Now seeing Setombe keeping up her strength by eating normally and her secreting less each day gives me hope she is dealing with her grief slowly but surely. Love to all the herd , all the carers, and Adine.❤❤😘

I love that the carers talk to the elephants like the intelligent beings they are. The carers know the elephants understand them and do their best to support and comfort them.

The most amazing creature God ever put on our planet, stunning, maternal, empathetic and so damn genius it's amazing. I collect elephants, 'no ivory' of course don't get me going.......such a beautiful and gorgeous perfect animal. From their trunks to their ears to their solid concrete bodies...the back of their ears are like silk in comparison to their whole frame. I know all and anything about pachyderms...they're my world.🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘💗💗

My deepest condolences to Setombe and all of the human and animal herds Phabeni is an angel pachyderm. If there's an afterlife, they'll see each other again

I continue to pray for Herd and carers for loss of beloved Phabeni.

As hard as they have to work to get the food, I imagine it takes all the 18 hours. They are such big animals. Thank you for sharing this and thank God for the stick.

The elephants are so purposeful and intentional when they feed - focusing on what they're doing and the best way to approach that bark to get it off the trunk - they're incredible problem solvers. It is also obvious that the elephants are sombre in mood - I can see it - I can feel it. Thank-you to all the Carers for talking and communicating with them about their grief. I'm sure there are many heartfelt conversations between the Elephant Herd and the Carers right now too. Everyone looking after and comforting each other through this loss 💜

Thank you for the update on Setombe. She as well as all the HERD family, carers and Ellie's alike, have been in my thoughts and prayers. It's good to see all of them eating and sharing some yummy forage. Watching them use their trunks and tusks is, as always, amazing! Such genius at work! This is by far my favorite KZfaq channel. From learning about these gentle giants and all the hard work involved in caring for them, you all blow my mind in your never ending and selfless dedication. A reminder that meal time with family is important. Sharing and showing respect for one another, no matter the differences, strengthens the bond. Not everyone has a human family member to eat with, but most have a pet and they do enjoy the company of their human...

Poor Setombe 😢💔 I really do hope she is coming to terms with the loss of Phabeni. I'm glad she has Klaserie, they have such a strong bond, she will make sure Mum is OK. The rest of the herd must also be a comfort in this period of mourning 🙏❤️🐘

Their ability to strip and eat bark and all kinds of tough brush is amazing. It is hard to imagine they can break down these objects for food. Hoping the elephants, Carers and Adine can begin to find peace and happiness in the coming days.

Thank you Owen for updating us with all the Elephant news. Glad to see that Setombe is eating, I was worried that she might not eat for a long time but here she is eating well. I am so glad I subscribed to this site, it tell it like it is warts and all, the sadness and the happiness both for animals and humans. I have loved elephants from a young age and to watch them eat and travel together Tokwe is a good leader and she has looked after Setombe along with the rest of the herd and you carers. We humans could learn a lot from the caring elephant herd. Love and hugs to all of you wonderful people and elephants.

Amidst all the pain and mourning over Baby Phabeni, we have Owen who ever so loyally keep us posted about the ongoings and daily lives of our most beloved herd. Thank you so much, Owen. Though we know you yourself are hurting, you continue to let us be in the loop about the ellies and for letting Adine have time to process her grief. It has been very difficult even for those of us who only knew Phabeni through your beautiful videos. I know it is way worse for you, who actually have a close bond with him. Thank you for staying strong for Adine and everyone. There is still heaviness and melancholy in the air with the ellies, as well in my heart and in those who loves that baby bull. It would really take a while, because Phabeni has greatly captured so many hearts, even my own, who admittedly is not much of animal lover. My heart really breaks and bleeds for Setombe and Adine and all of HERD as well. Please know we are with you and no matter how long, Phabeni will always be in my heart, as well as all of you. You have no idea how much positive impact you have for my sanity and peace. I could never thank you enough. I love you all. And God Will Bless and Heal You And Us All Together.🙏🐘❤

It is good that the herd is following their routine but I sense their sadness. They are very quiet, even Mambo is behaving. It will take awhile for things to feel normal again for the ellies and humans alike. I am among the many people from around the world who fell on love with Phabeni and sadly now mourn his loss. Only time will heal us but our hearts will be forever touched by this little bull. I followed his progress every day from the day he was rescued until his passing. I, too , aren't able to watch any of the videos where he was featured so I go back and watch the videos of Khanysia and I find myself smiling at her cute little antics as she was healing and joining the herd. I can't believe she will be 5 years old in September. My heart goes out to everyone at HERD and around the world who love and adore these ellies. May Phabeni's memory ne a blessing.❤

Setombe seems as if she wants to be on her own, just as in the previous video. Grief is very personal, and sometimes we need support from others, but often, we want to grieve alone 😢
