Here come the cows! Our first Braunvieh cows arrive today.

Today we get our first group of cows on our ranch. We need to get them some time to learn the waterer so we'll keep them in a training pen for a little while before we let them have the field. But it's an exciting day for us here and about a year of planning/work to get here.

So Braunvieh is the beef version of the Brown Swiss

Its just a native Swiss regional name, they are triple purpose breed for meat, milk and working animals. In English is called "brown Swiss".

Your cows are pretty nice. Are you going to be keeping a bull for breeding ?

At some point yes, I don't really want to get into separating a bull out when the herd is this small so I'll probably look at either AI or renting a bull from someone for the first couple years.

How are they doing with the cold and water. I think in an earlier video you mentioned you were in N Texas - me too in Montague County. Just curious if you're having to break up ice or if the water trough you setup also keeps it above freezing? Also what kind is it?

Yup I'm just a few counties east of you in Delta. So far they've been doing well with the water, I've actually kept the waterer in training mode (ball held down with a bolt). As of yesterday they were drinking fine from it so it hadn't frozen. Today it looks like my camera solar panel must have froze over and the camera is out of power, but I was able to still see them from a distance with my other camera and they seem to be happily munching hay. I'm going to try to get that camera to take some time lapse to see if they're still good on water. The waterer is a Miraco 3330 miraco.com/mira-fount/mirafount-3330/
