Yeah, an aircraft launching troop carrier launching ship for a fast beach attack is the idea. A neatly contained sea/ground attack force with sufficient air cover. Three of these ships could secure a large landing area for follow-on troops with heavier weapons like MBTs and artillery. BUT the Navy/Corps needs to find a GOOD, high sea state survivable, amphibious troop carrier that won't sink!

It's a Gator Freighter ... not a carrier. The "carrier" version of the F-35 is the Charlie variant. ('C' for carrier). That ship hauls Marines, not aviators.

Definitely not by the sailors and Marines who man her, and also not by sailors who are on CVN aircraft carriers. I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but there tends to be rivalry in just about everything in the military. Or, are you disputing the variant of the F-35? It was clearly a B variant shown in the video, and that aircraft is replacing the AV-8B Harrier, which was flown by Marines and not Naval Aviators. The VSTOL capability means it can not deploy an arresting hook, which is a very important safety feature for aircraft that land on aircraft carriers. I don't know the exact numbers, but I would guess that ship hauls twice as many Marines as it does sailors, hence the name "Gator Freighter". ... Which part of my post do you have issue with?

It actually will do neither. It doesn't have any 5-inch guns like LHA-5 had, and the missiles and CIWS it carries are to shoot down fast moving incoming air threats. It obviously does not carry any torpedoes. The DDG class of ships hunts ships and other aircraft.

It's actually about the same size as the old Essex class ww2 carriers :D

@Olias this is a amphibious assualt ship that's been pretty much turned into a light carrier or strike carrier. It's size is the equivalent of many other. Nations true carriers. The US super carriers exceeds many other powers by sheer size alone

Amphibious, ships are meant for helicopters not slightly larger fighter-jet fighters. It's landing runways that's short for the burst of power of the F/18touching down.

The Navy will never get rid of the SuperCarrier. Ever. All are tools used in the right place.

Actually in WW2 we had traditional Carriers and then we had light carriers and strike carriers. It would make sense that in the modern era that the formula would stay roughly the same. These carriers will not replace the Super Carrier not even close. However they can respond to a situation where a super carrier might not be needed or perform operations where a carrier would be to obvious. These are actually very flexible ships, but they will never replace a Super Carrier.

I get where your coming from but what I was getting at is I see the super carrier's going the way of the battle ship. Weapons are more specialized now and becoming harder for a large carrier to defend.
