I remember those boron rods, they were sensitive but fragile compared to the old Lews speed sticks

I use both, spinning and casting. My casting setup is a Megabass JBS fitting with a ‘22 metanium shallow. Slows me to east run 8lb and cast a mile. The one thing I prefer with a spinning rod is the drag, otherwise the casting combo is much easier to fish all day

@@atamagashock I use both spinning and casting setups and I really like both. They each have their place.

I can look at lines designed for Pike fishing with retrieved lures in Sweden. Or lines that were intended to fish for steelhead in Alaska State in America. Or lines designed to fish with bass bugs and other large (i.e. jerk bait profile and sized lures), in western areas of Montana, Wyoming or Idaho States. And lines intended to be used to fish with lures. That get up to as large as swimbait and glidebait scale. In States such as Michigan. These are all different parts of the world in which fishing is done. Using retrieved lures of various kinds and styles. And the thing of design of the line from a point of view of assisting the retrieve to remain at the required depth in the water. For long enough. That is a common preoccupation with anglers that fish for other species too. That is another thing that is exactly similar in jerk bait fishing for bass. To other types of fishing in other parts of the world.

That tells you why jerk bait lure fishing is a really strange method. Because it incorporates those aspects that anglers such as Goddard and the English surface dry fly anglers understood. In relation to how the fish see the bait, and how the water clarity plays a factor. To the way in which the retrieve of the bait works. The jerk bait is intended to imitate a real bait fish. So depth and retrieve come into play. There are a couple of inputs into that conversation. About lines, depth, speed and retrieve. In relation to fishing that are unique. Because they represent that same 'fifty years' of learning thing. That Randy is talking about in that seminar. One of those talks was by Tommy Lynch of Michigan. Episode 347 of the Wet Fly Swing series of interviews. Is really about what Tommy calls 'a sales pitch' in fly fishing. Using Rapala and jerkbait lure inspired flies. In which they fish for bass and trout in those colder northern rivers.

Back in April in 2020. I'm glad that George Cook, explained at length how one system operates. He's done it all. The dry fly style of fishing that Goddard would have been familiar with. The bass fishing, the lake fishing for trout and bass. In a lot of States. A lot of climates. He's worked and fished a lot in Alaska on rivers that are extremely large, angry and fast moving (where line control presents all kinds of issues). And how the anglers came up with strategies to try and cope with that. His interview at the Gig Harbour Fly Shop in Washington State from April 2020. Is a very good journey into the subject matter. Of fishing depths, lure presentation and line control. It doesn't really matter what kind of tackle it refers to. Spinning, bait cast, fly rod. At the end of the day, it's about a lure presentation and retrieve. And as much as many of those anglers have understood. And they have figured out. There are still big un-awnsered questions about all of it. I would put Randy's conversation about the Jerk Bait lure presentation. Alongside some of those other ones. That stand out to me, in terms of depth and knowledge. And there's a similarity too in what all of them focus attention on. Even though they're all fishing different geography for different kinds of fish.

Hey guys go write a novel. A jerkbait is lure that goes from a dead stop to full excelleration to make a bass think it is getting away. That's it. The bass may not even be hungry he just won't let it get away (predatory instinct)

I was watching a Fly Dressers' Guild 2013 event. It was given by John Smith in England who had grown up fishing with John Goddard. And the two things which apply to jerk bait lure fishing. Which also tend to apply to John Goddards work with trout. Is the thing of water clarity, visibility of the target from the fish's point of view, and the extent to which the fish will study the object. Which is the bait and hook. Those things when put together are very similar. There is very little footage of Goddard on his water in Britain (he specialized in fishing types of rivers that have been going through problems in recent years). Because of over-growth of vegetation has made the channels very small. And general lack of water owing to consumption by the cities and towns beside the rivers. Insect life and hatches too are a lot less (Peter Charles who fishes around the Great Lakes in Canada explained too). He noticed that with intensive agriculture practices in his part of the world. When driving down the road there now, he finds less and less aquatic hatched insects on his vehicle windscreen. At times of the year in summer now than he would have in the past. And he related that to health of populations of fish such as migratory rainbow trout there.

Relating it back to bass fishing though, I tended to agree with Frank Scalish on his spotted bass episode no. 86 lesson. On this concept that predatory bass species tend to prefer this notion. That they can somehow pin their bait fish against some obstacle underneath the water. In order to become active enough to bite and chase after live baitfish. The point being, it's a calculation. The same calculation that the brown trout in the rivers that John Goddard fished for did. It's a trade-off between energy necessary in order to feed on insects or bait fish. Versus the amount of energy that is used up in chasing after them. Which led anglers such as Goddard to realize. That trout would key into a particular stage of a certain insect (namely the stage at which it was most vulnerable to feeding trout). And that trout would selectively feed on that stage of the insect. And it was important he considered. From a point of view of how the bait was made, what stage it was meant to imiate. There is some footage of the angler talking in 'The Educated Trout' series from long ago.

The reason that this statement by an angler in Ohio State. Made about spotted bass fishing in rivers there. It made sense. Not far away from where Goddard fished in England in his limestone and chalk bed rivers there. That had excellent water clarity at all times of year (and being in limestone landscape the water flow were a lot more even and constant). Which led to very predicable insect hatching conditions. And as a side-effect of that, more predictable behavior from the brown trout in rivers. In terms of their feeding that he was able to study. Not far away from that fresh water system of rivers. Is the limestone and chalk geology coastline with the saltwater habitat. That lots and lots of European saltwater bass anglers fish in. Often they use the same Megabass jerk bait lures there too. And they've rationalized what is going on with shoals of bass and the bait fish. On the saltwater side of things too.

It was shocking to figure out some of this. There are only a limited number of types of fish that exist in the world. Some of the fish species are much older and more primitive than other species are. And not older by a small amount. Older by a hundred million years or more in some. Having enjoying reading about 'fly fishing' sports people around the world. I've heard of those bonefish anglers who fish shallow saltwater habitat in Florida. It was a real shock to understand. It's a part of the family that we consider a freshwater fish in Europe. Known as the freshwater Eel fish. That had adapted to saltwater condition living in America. And visa versa, the saltwater species that we know in Europe. Became a freshwater type of fish in north and south America. The catfish that exists in America. Was part of a family that changed from saltwater to freshwater habitat too. In one of the Ice Age periods of thousands of years ago. I think it's part of the Carp broader family. The point being though, these fish have evolved over a very long time. To cope in different kinds of habitat. It was the same 'brown trout' that John Goddard was fishinig for in southern England. Had been brought from Bavaria in Germany at some stage. To the State of Pennsylvania when the brook trout were fished to extinction. In the rivers there, it spread out into freshwater systems across America. And the brown trout turned into a bait-fish hunting species in north America. As opposed to an insect feeder (and it other parts such as Scandinavia it evolved into a migratory saltwater and freshwater fish). Living mainly in estuaries in places like the Baltic.

The whole technique of presentation though with the dry fly. As in the case of Goddard and these kinds of anglers (where they are dealing with sight-feeding trout in very clear water). Where the fish is able to distinguish very subtle differences in the insect. The technique of fishing involves a good bit of slack line in the casting presentation. In the same way as with the jerk bait technique. Where they fish, the bass that studies the jerk bait in that case. Is not going to attack the bait automatically. And that was the skill about dry fly fishing. How to present the lure to the fish. In such a way as it drifted over the eyeballs of the fish that was studying it. Without showing the angler having any manipulation on the lure. For that length of time (otherwise you would break the illusion and the fish would refuse the bait altogether). Not many anglers could do that well. In the same way too, that jerk bait lure anglers in bass. Are a group of anglers who are separate a bit from others. The dry fly anglers in the clear water conditions for trout. Are separate from others in the same way. Because it's a visual bait presentation. It's not easy for a lot of guys to master.

Or 20 to 30 lb braid no leader. The walleye don't seem to care, but I have noticed I don't catch many bass with the straight braid.

A little contradiction there you think. I fish in winter and aggressive isn't the word I would use.

Yes we exclusively fish jeekbait this time of year over grass beds in south Louisiana. Lake Pontchartrain specifically. Speckled trout LOVE them

I have more jerkbait than any other tackle. I dont fish freshwater at all
