I would do anything to go back into a perfectly working W221 S600. I used to have one and hearing your sl start up with the bings and bongs made me feel super nostalgic. I almost cried because of how much I miss it. I had it for 13 years. I can remember the smell it had (smelled like it did when we bought it new) and the super comfortable ride with the insanely powerful V12 at the time

IMO, what prevents you from decapitation is the windshield and its sturdiness. One SL was flipped on a circuit, and the structure was not affected, the glass did not even break. The rollbar was made to future-proof the car against regulations and ensure a global distribution. Still a good idea anyway.

Informative video as always. Thanks A few points from a long time owner. The folding roof never failed me in 16 years of ownership (it was then 22 years old. You just need to operate it at least once a month. Well it always worked for me, and I regularly had the hardtop on and off and then on again... When you are about to put the soft top down consider putting a rolled up soft clean towel lengthwise in the back window ( create about a 4inch roll all the way across the folding roof) when the roof is halfway down you need to get out of the car stop the roof insert the towel (boring I know) This will stop the perspex creasing and cracking at the edges, as the perspex hardens over time. Sure you have to stop the roof going up halfway and then put the towel somewhere . I suggest the space where the roof folds into but it's worth it to avoid the perspex damage (I think) On the v8 SL's using the gearbox shifter brings the car alive when you want more excitement. Lastly the solid carved out of granite feel of the car you feel in a a well maintained never goes away even after all these years, so when there is only two of you in years to come, you should consider adding another one to your garage, To keep that feel and not have mechanical surprises, as you said earlier, you do have use them regularly. Perhaps keep in touch with the new buyer and buy it back again for half the dollars. You will love having it in your garage.

Agree, but I quite liked the fins on the 2010-era BMWs, they were cool. What I don't get though, my E36 has a hidden antenna, it's a little thingy inside the c-pillar and my radio reception is brilliant, no different from any modern car... Why the hell does pretty much noone do that anymore?

I highly enjoy your videos including your fascination for eighties pop culture. I always respect (and enjoy watching) other people’s cars and passion about them. That actually keeps me watching these videos as well. I cannot think of Mercedes without thinking “taxi” and after driving SL convertibles or the big sedans I’m always glad I don’t own them, BUT seeing other people explain why they love them so much I do totally understand. I have that with hot rods too. And Ferraris. Then again I am already looking forward to your Miami Vice rendition on the next episode! Keep it up!

Judging by the end of the video Hoovie has bought a Ferrari 328, probably a GTS as Ferrari only sold a very few GTBs in the US. I must admit I approve, the 308 and 328 2-seaters are wonderful to drive, aside from the extremely heavy clutch, and are probably the easiest Ferraris to own, but this is Hoovie and, judging by the way the values of these have gone over the last few years, this one probably has issues. A friend of mine had a 328 GTB that he used as his daily transport for more than 15 years and it was extremely reliable and surprisingly cheap to own...

"The box design that literally every car manufacturer from the 90's had is way better than the bland design of the unique 2000's Mercedes look that doesn't stand out. The box design is iconic and stands out." It's ok to have your opinion but come on man, listen to what you are saying. The 90's look was interesting but I don't think you can say it stood out at all considering a lot of the designs going on in the 90's, meanwhile the 2000's design, especially considering the 4 oval headlights was and is not very common.

That car today is 35 years old. So yeah, these cars are safeish. Problem is perhaps if you crash really badly with another modern vehicle, this thing will still most likely loose the fight, and most likely pretty badly. A new car is much stronger then any car made 20 - 30 years ago. And I LOVE the W123's and I love these things you got there! I'd buy em off ya if I could! xD

@@jag251080 you're never an any issue with any of your 5? how long did you keep each of them? cause that's crazy lucky. the 80's mercs were pretty bad, and the 90s MBs even worse. they did get better in the 10s (the 2013 E that we have still hasn't broken down to be fair). in any case, MB has treated you well, so i guess keep on, keeping on. and yeah, no bmw ever again.

@@bungsana What are you talking about. The 90s mercedes are known for good reliability... Of course they are aging cars, and that means problems will occur, but nothing out of the oridnary really. Most other cars are at the scrap yard by now. It's when Chrysler stepped in things went downhill as they began to cheap out on various parts. Note also that Mercedes that were made in the US, rather than in Germany, are worse in terms of build quality, that also mean reliability wise. In Europe, US model imports are not favored, because of this.

Not only door locks are vacuum operated also the head light adjustment even ignition partially. There's a little bit more than the locking which doesn't operate by engine vacuum by the way

Oh, silly Hoovie, you could have found the rear seats for the back of one via salvage, some SLs had them. Still not much room though, could crush the kids legs with the power seats, but it's a SL600, so will be a good story for them later in life when they exchange the crutches for a wheelchair....

Tyler, have you ever given any consideration to adding a genuine muscle car to the hoopty Fleet? While the prices of the premium and more popular cars from the classic muscle era have skyrocketed, there are still several diamonds in the Ruff available out there. For example the Buick Grand Sport made from 1970 through 1972 could be had with a big block and a 4-speed, the exact same body style and suspension as the Chevelle and GTO, and is still available for under $20,000. Several makes from American Motors can be had at good prices, and if you're willing to do a little polishing you can actually find the more popular Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles, and GTOs at decent prices. I'd like to see one in the fleet and get your opinion on it. If nothing else, it would hold its value one hell of a lot better than the stuff you usually buy and repair cost on classic American Iron is a fraction of what the Euro stuff runs

$5000 isn’t considered cheap. While still holding on to its value when it was purchased and adjusting for today’s value. Yeah, it sounds cheap.
