How would you go about doing this technique over wood paneling ? I was thinking...tri-sodium phosphate to take down gloss, maybe sand with 120 grit, prime it with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer to help it stick then do exactly as you have done in this video ? I have all paneling in my living room and kitchen I would like to cover up. Also how can I add my paint to the plus 3 pre mix ? Thanks in advance :)

Hey thanks I really learned a lot. I've been finishing drywall for long long time like you and really prefer to do smooth wall. When and where I started there was no word for "smooth wall". It's all you did. Having moved from there a couple decades ago now, and 2 new places, I had to relearn my craft somewhat and went and got a hopper and rented the big Graco a whole bunch of times. I'd sell smooth wall where I could but a lot of people wanted their orange peel. It nearly felt sinful unnecessarily shooting texture on finished work but I learned where I would save time on the finish work but holding that hopper is brutal on everything right down to the trigger fingers. I've seen many skip troweled walls/ceilings but never saw a guy do it, till now. Your's is a nice finish and just wanted to say thanks for the video, and Yes I liked and Subscribed :)

After having some plumbing repairs in the walls of my home, the drywall crew came and did repairs. They instructed me to wait at least 72 hours before painting, and to use a primer. After watching maybe 20 videos of drywall repair, I've never seen anyone wait that long before painting. What if any length of time should one wait, in your opinion. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos. They are very informative and motivating.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
I tell people 24 hours. But sometimes I can paint in as little as 12. Mud drying speed is dependent on humidity, temperature, air flow and the thickness of the mud. So to paint sooner you turn the temperature up, turn fans on, and get rid of the excess humidity by opening some windows. Then I'd look close at the mud, if it's ALL white with no darker yellow areas, then it's dry and can be painted. Mud goes from yellow to White as it dries. It will dry slowest at the floor and in the area where two walls meet a ceiling.

Hi, yes, It's kind of more about the low spots I'm basically spreading mud and then I smooth it out a bit, but leave all the voids, which creates the texture. Thanks for stopping by. Most of the construction jobs I have been on, the dry wallers use the boxes of pre mixed mud whether it's the white with blue writing or white with green writing. Usually I do plumbing. The dry wall mud is supposed to be right up to the pipes to keep the bugs from having a space to get into the building from behind the dry wall through. I have worked on a huge number of homes, apartments, and other buildings doing plumbing. I estimated I have done the new construction plumbing on around 300+ homes / 200+ mansions, 60 + homes that are custom homes but not as big of rooms on average as mansions, and about 25 new average size home mostly in Maricopa County Arizona.

I wore a sarong in Asia years ago and I would probably wear a utili-kilt if people in our culture weren’t so tedious about such things. I want to texture over semi gloss paint in a bathroom. I wouldn’t try it with a wire brush as it would take forever. Look into using a power sander and a vacuum to minimize the dust. I prefer to sand with 24 a grit disc which are kind of hard to find but I do have them on my site at etsy.me/3dxrMRK

I'm going to try this one in my kitchen. I have seen several homes that have a swirl type texture, it has some thick raised mud areas in it. Definitely not the skip trowel, do you know that that would be and if so maybe you could post a video on it.

Great video - thank you! Its nice to see a true craftsman at work. It seems a big portion of the work is scooping mud and working it into the texture. Could this technique be created by using a dry wall knock down gun to apply a random/inconsistent coat on the wall, and then use your hand trowel method to work the sprayed mud to the final texture? I’d like to do my new house with this texture, but am looking for options to make the job go more quickly. Your thoughts on my crazy idea appreciated.

HI, sorry for the delayed answer but sometimes comments just kind of dissappear. Anyway, I would wipe it down, or dust it off. I sand with a vacuum sander so that does both at once. If you don't, the mud won't stick as well, if at all in places. I always go around and do the edges of an area about 20 sq ft first, then I fill in the middle working from the edges inward. Hope that helps.

Very helpful videos. I have a house built in 1960 with very textured walls. The previous owner used semi-gloss on all the walls. If I wanted to try this should I get a high bonding primer and prime the walls before I skip coat them? Also, what do you think about those Venetian plasters? I am an artist and have always been curious about colored plasters and textures.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara, (ps, that's my mothers name too). Whenever you apply mud over a high gloss paint, or a really smooth surface, you have to give the mud something to bite onto known as giving it tooth. While you can try a high bonding primer, I prefer to sand all those surfaces with my sandpole, and some 60-80 grit. You want a lot of scratches in the paint and to de-gloss it a bit. Then it will stick fine. But if you want to do more, you can apply a high bonding primer, and you can use the green label all purpose as it has more adhesive in it. But it will be harder to sand so I usually just sand the paint and use my Plus 3 and it works fine. As for venetian plasters, I love them. I actually took a week long Faux finishing class and learned several custom plasters including the venetian and Ovilla. I did an O'villa plaster on my last house and loved it too. It comes out very soft and flat with depth of colors. But venetian is pretty too and can have a burnished polish to it, or semi flat. I like to do it with several colors, layering it multiple times to get the depth. I plan on doing videos on some of these finishes one day. Sooo many videos I plan on doing, and soo little time, lol. Thanks for asking, and feel free to ask about anything else. I appreciate you being part of my channel. Take care. Guy

Will this skip coating cover the tape joints that are showing on a large and high wall? Currently you can see every tape joint, both horizontal and vertical. The wall has been a texture of a medium orange peel.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Not too likely. Bad joints tend to show through all textures. Now minor edges, and minor defects like screws that are still dimpled slightly, can be covered by a skip trowel texture. I just finished fixing $6,000 worth of really bad joints all over a house in the living room, dining room and kitchen, with ceilings going from 10' -14' and it started with me removing the popcorn texture first. But even with the Heavy popcorn texture the joints stood out really bad. I spent 3 days just fixing all the cracks, etc and another 3 days texturing it, (was very complicated, plus I fixed about 20 cracks and such on the walls). But I didn't leave anything more than minor thin edges and minor nail dimpling, which I made sure to cover my texture, and it came out great. That price did include painting the ceiling, but not the walls, and it took 10 days with 2 of us. Good luck on your project.

Hey there! Love the kilt btw! So i just bought an old ranch 50's house in MI with a cove ceiling in living room. It isn't lathe behind the walls. It's like concrete board material then coated with plaster (which i kinda love btw). The rest of the house walls are great, but that living ceiling has been popcorned over, but also painted cause the old lady smoked heavily. It looks like crap from the roof that was leaking. So I watched vids on soaking and scraping it off but with it painted I'm wondering if I'm better off using my power sander to knock off most the bumps and then do a skip trowel like u did. Good or bad idea? Any other options?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 6 жыл бұрын
I have a video shot on popcorn removal and will get it out one day when I have enough time, lol. There's a lot to consider when removing it. If it's older than 1980 it could have asbestos in it, which you can test for with a kit from home depot for like $50 including the labs. As for removing it, if you feel it's safe, it could still scrape with water just fine, even after being painted. I've found that some do, and some don't, and I've removed around100. Best thing is do a test scrape. And each room could be painted different, so might need to test each one. I've had some look difficult, then scrape fine, and other take 6 coats of water sprayed over a couple of hours with soaking time. As for sanding it off, once it's painted, forget it. Paint sands very hard and gums up sandpaper really quick. Anything rough enough to sand it off will likely do too much damage, so at that point I either A-Scrape it with a 6" knife to remove what I can and then skim coat it with hot mud, and then sand, touchup and skip trowel, or B- put a whole new layer right over the old and start from new, or C- soak and scrape it anyway, taking 4 times as long, and 4 times the work with likely 2-4 times the damage. But I wouldn't sand and then texture, it will look like old doogie doo that's rolled down a hill covered in leaves, well, you get my drift anyway. Hope that helps, and let me know what you decide, or if you have more questions. Take care Nikki

You could apply a paint de glosser, or sand it the best you can and add some glue to the mud, about 3-4 TBL per box of mud. You can add more but beware that the more you add the harder it will dry and the harder to sand. Or do it all to ensure the best adhesion, sand, de gloss and add glue. Also note that regular weight all purpose has more glue from the factory than lightweight.

Those pesky bubbles. I have never figured out a way to eliminate them, so when they happen, you can just sand them off, then vacuum the dust out of the holes, and fix them with mud. @ThatKiltedGuyDIY

Those bubbles are my biggest pain in the butt anywhere. In all my years I honestly haven’t figured out a way to make them not appear. But I have found that the thicker you put it on, the more air bubbles. I’ve even read where the manufactures say it is just the moisture escaping as bubbles and it will be worse over nonporous surfaces. So I just sand them off, and vacuum the dust out of the holes or blow it out, and then skim over the bubbles to fill them back in. I have tried many many tricks and none of them have helped so I’m not sure there is a cure for this issue. Sorry I couldn’t be more help on this one. If anyone out there has ideas on what to do, please post them below and I will gladly try them if I haven’t already.

@ThatKiltedGuyDIY

There's dozens of different ways to do a skip trowel texture, so this wasn't meant to show how to match another one, more to show how I do my version. Being able to match another persons skip trowel can take a long time to master, since each person does it slightly different. I can't do much to help you without being able to see your texture, but the best advice is to leave less voids than I did, and see if that works. And I doubt that it was rolled on as that usually results in a different look. Hey, thanks, I appreciate that. I'll keep being me and encouraging others to do the same. It would be a boring world if we all dressed the same. Here's where you can buy that shirt. drywall-repairs.myteespring.co/?_ga=GA1.2.2047950271.1607113966

I've noticed that paint over some of the light weight mud can be chipped off with your fingernail. Very susceptible to nicks. Is this your experince?

Never seen that problem if painted with 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY You are probably right. They just didn't use enough paint. Some of those characters just get things the right color and rush off.

Hey Guy, great video.......ignore the ignorant haters, lots of idiots out there!Anyhow,I wanted to ask what you end up doing with the blue taped inside corners at the top.Can I just start troweling from that corner without taping?Thanks
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Well the blue line in my video is actually paint because they had a pasted on border around the top and had painted under that and when they removed the border, the blue line showed. But inside angles should always be taped or at the very least caulked if the crack is tight. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any further questions.
