its baffling. It's definitely disappointing. A big part of exploring giant planets should be the ability to fly around and view the geography and landscape from the sky, or fly in between mountains and ravines, or to scout locations to build a base, etc. I genuinely don't understand how people aren't at least somewhat disappointing by this omission. It is literally a common staple of every space sci-fi, or every space fantasy. Insanely bizzare to omit a standard of space and planetary EXPLORATION. Heck, its literally a part of life itself - we fly planes and helicopters to travel vast distances... 100% there will be mods to fix this.

I believe they covered this already and confirmed you can't fly within an atmosphere. It sucks, but also it's not a complete deal breaker. It could be nice to have some land vehicles that you could ride around. Maybe an update or dlc? (Imagine having a ship addition that allowed you to house a rover) Edit: I do have some concerns or unanswered questions about these landing spots. Will it be possible to see a group of islands and never be able to visit them? I do see something fishy going on here. No one wants to travel a whole planet by walking, which makes me feel like when you land, you're not landing on the whole planet but just a small section that has been loaded for you. We'll just have to wait and see i guess Edit#2: look at 5:40 in the gameplay deep dive. You can pick any place to land.

Exactly, this is a game for people who want the lore of Bethesda in a true space game of this scale, it's not for SC and Elite fans to have another pilot simulator, it's a lore, exploration, and RPG, if you're not here for lore and world building first they made it clear you probably won't like this game as much as other space games.

Atmospheric flight isn't something I care that deeply about, but I would hope they have a mode of travel on the ground. I never really used horses in Skyrim because things were close enough together and fast traveling was really easy. However, when trying to explore a planet, I can't imagine running around on foot everywhere being fun the entire time. @DuctTapeJake
@DuctTapeJake Жыл бұрын
I would assume that the planets are not actually generated close up at the start apart from mission areas. They would have the large models you see from space, and if you pick a unique location to land it effectively generates a terrain 'cell' based on the texture and probably some heightmap data on that large model. So hopefully if you pick a location next to an ocean, then the ocean will be there on the new map. Then you won't be able to get too far away from your ship because the newly generated map isn't actually that big, they'll have some kind of barrier due to 'oxygen limitations' or something. So I do not expect you to be able to land a distance away from a mission location and then walk for 2 hours to actually get there, I think those will be two separate maps. Because of this they won't be able to have a ship that can actually travel in atmosphere because the planet itself isn't one cohesive whole.
@torrb420
@torrb420 Жыл бұрын
Todd basically hints to this at the very beginning of the showcase. It's Creation Engine, and it as an engine relies on cells for terrain generation. Only difference here is cells could be much larger than previous games. But like previous games, you got the end of a cell, then there is loading of the new cell in the back end, and interior cell that needs to load in order for the next cell to stream in, or there are barriers. You will probably only be able to travel so far away from your landung spot. There will be no need for in planetary flight or land vehicles because the amount of land available to explore once you land will be limited. You can "explore" the "entire" planet, but will most likely and hinted at by Todd himself, won't be able to actually walk the entire length of the planet end to end once landed. If you want to explore another cell, we will have to re-land to another spot.
@DuctTapeJake
@DuctTapeJake Жыл бұрын
@torrb420 yeah it's pretty much how all level streaming works, UE5 is doing it slightly differently where you can vary the size of the cells at any time. It's more that I'm wondering if the terrain is going to be generated 'only' if you decide to land in that spot, or if the game knows ahead of time what every corner of every planet looks like.

So there is a good chance that this game will be fun. But it’s not going to be deep or special. This game is the pinnical of bethesdas worst trend, wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle. Fun fact I learned while I was studying game design. Apparently, Bethesda's archaic engine can't do vehicles, not ones you can get in and drive. This is why vehicles are set piece moments in their previous titles, the wagon in skyrim, the brotherhood's ships in Fallout 4. In Skyrim, the wagon in the intro was connected to a character underground who was walking. I dont think people realize just how hard Bethesda is working to make this relic of an engine perform. @@williammoore1030 It may not be but the fact that it's proven to be done by a small team over 6yrs ago shows it's no trouble for a AAA studio to do the same. And while content wise NMS is pretty small in comparison, the scale of Starfield is much smaller too, and with so much more to do in Starfield, I think it would be all the more important to have free flying on a planet, or at the very least the ability to have land vehicles. If you don't have to travel long distances on a single planet a lot, I can see them getting away with not adding a feature like that... but what if you have to and that feature isn't there? That adds up, think about that. They have everything they need to make flying on a planet possible and the lack of showing it would suggest it's not there. I really hope it's there, or there'll be some seriously annoying excursions and there'll be a mod to add it in in no time.

Theory: There is no "open world" aspect to starfield. You can't have vehicles or fly on the planet because there is no planet to fly around. There will be kilometer sized tiles that load in that are randomly generated. The handcrafted areas on specific planets will be like small open world maps you can explore. However the places you land on from space that aren't handcrafted will be for you to drop into, find a lil sumsum then move on. You can't run from a random LZ to a city for example.

Starfield is an open world game, but that open world is generated in smaller tiles and then stitched together onto the planet. I'm absolutely not buying the hype, there's that saying 'once bitten twice as shy', Bethesda bit us more times than I can remember. Apparently Starfield is made with an updated version of Creation Engine simply called Creation Engine *2* which gives me a bit of hope but I wonder why they didn't ditch that old engine completely. I don't get how people give Nintendo so much flack for their old hardware even though their games run perfectly and we just let Bethesda keep the same engine of a decade ago while their games are capable of breaking PCs. Remember the state the resident evil franchise was in after RE 6? Capcom created a whole new engine to help them fix the franchise and so we got Resident Evil 7, why doesn't Bethesda do something like that? They have Microsoft money now don't they?

You’re not wrong to have this expectation considering how common it is, but I think you’re not being very generous and that you’re making a false equivalence when comparing Starfield and No Man’s Sky. Probably the most important distinction is that these games are built with different engines. No Man’s Sky uses a custom engine that was specifically built for that game. Starfield uses Creation Engine 2, an engine that is probably meant to be used for future games very different from Starfield. And it almost certainly inherits some limitations and design quirks from Creation Engine, the engine used for games like Skyrim. I’m disappointed too, but back in January Howard said they planned to do this from very early on. Apparently it would be a waste of time to focus on bridging space and land considering how relatively little time players would spend there. There’s probably a huge benefit to having this separation of concerns. If they fix a physics bug on land, they might not need to be worried about that fix’s side effects for space physics. Considering how buggy Bethesda games are, this will probably be for the best.

Games like No Man's Sky and Star Citizen have valid motives behind having dozens of planets, partially because they are both multiplayer. Star Citizen has 300 and it feels incredibly vast. Starfield is singleplayer with primarily on-foot exploration. Why does it need a 1000 planets? Also, I recently watched a video of a guy walking across a planet in a straight line in No Man's Sky. It took him 48 hours of just walking. Starfield hasn't stated that planets have varying biomes or wildlife, so things will become repetitive pretty quickly. Starfield looks like a good game, and it has all the hallmarks of what makes a Bethesda game, but it's trying to capitalize on scale and quantity, and unfortunately experience may have taught you that this is something that you need to be careful of.

Wildlife looks the same in every planet they visited, but that could just be me. Events that show up, like the 'go here and exterminate these things' type, were shown in presentation. The Beauty of Bethesda’s Fallout and TES is that they start the player at the bottom of a crude, tedious environment. You derive fulfillment by feeling like you’ve earned everything you have and knowing it was a long struggle. To start a player out in an advanced sci fi universe takes away from that sense of accomplishment. Things become monotonous quicker than anticipated. Nah they completely rebuilt the engine for it to support space ships and the space flight seems at least semi physics based. Impossible to to have that many levels of freedom of movement in something hacked together like "train head" in FO3 not the mention the whole space combat part that is a whole other thing that requires advanced physics and collision detection doing that as cleanly as it appears to be in Starfield is not in the realm of possibility in original Creation Engine (see the attempts at mounted combat in Skyrim for an example of just how impossible that is) I would expect Starfield to have some kind of ground based vehicle available as making spaceships work are on a whole different level of difficulty than ground based vehicles such as rovers.

They confirmed there is NOT the option to fly your ship within the atmosphere, plus, if they had implemented a terrestrial vehicle, like a rover, they would have showed it. My guess is that you CANNOT land and explore a planet freely, but you will just be able to land on a few selected landing spot on each planet and if you walk too far from that spot, an invisible wall will pop up, with a message saying "you are too far from your ship, come back or ( insert random excuse)". Even sprinting can't help you. You really NEED a fucking vehicle in that game to move around without getting bored. As for Fallout 4, you don't even need a sprint button to "explore," the wasteland without getting bored. It doesn't have much negative space, there is something interesting at almost 10 meters. But it becomes boring without fast travel, since after you fully explored an area, it basically turns into a negative space without any new content. After that point it turns into Fallout New Vegas, running around empty spaces.

Biggest issue I see is that the majority of the handcrafted locations (aside from the major cities, which are on predetermined planets) are going to be loaded into whatever planet you land on based on what the game wants to show you at any particular time. So you really have no control over exploration. You can go to any random planet, but the game will slap a certain number of handcrafted locations onto that planet. It will show you what it wants to show you, not what you discover. So the game is more about experiencing all the content by playing a lot, not actually exploring. It is the illusion of exploration, not actual exploration of a map.

Put on you tinfoil hats for this one. I'm pretty sure the reason why we can't have in atmo flight is because the way the level generation will end up working. I have a sneaking suspicion that wherever we decide to land, the game will load up a chunk of the level, let's just say a 30x30 playable grid around the landing site of your spaceship, and then put up invisible walls for you so you can't traverse further away from your ship. This is just my personal skeptic theory, but I don't think all these planets will be true "open worlds" in the way we might think, but rather, non consecutive increments of map, strung together by loading screens. This was never going to be quite as ambitious (or eternally unfinished) as Star Citizen… but especially in comparison to NMS which has all kinds of traversal but hardly anything with regard to story, dense characters and dialogue options (what BGS does best). So they may well have cut back on traversal- but the detail we get in who and what we’re interacting with in front of us is the trade-off. It also seems highly likely to me that ground or short-range traversal in atmo is something that might very well be added in future content updates.
