Built to the same specifications, the X-32 and the F-35 had relatively similar performance parameters. Deciding to compete on cost, Boeing designed the X-32 around a single-piece delta wing that would fit all three variants. The X-32 lacked the shaft-driven turbofan lift of the F-35, instead using the same thrust vectoring system as the AV-8 Harrier. The X-32’s system was less advanced than the F-35’s, but also less complex.
The Department of Defense (DoD) didn’t have to opt for the F-35. In the 1990s, both Boeing and Lockheed Martin bid for the next big fighter contract, a plane that would serve in each of the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, as well as grace the air forces of many US allies. Boeing served up the X-32; Lockheed the X-35.

If you think the F-35 has flaws, the X-32 had far grander issues. For example, the delta wing configuration was not enough to provide a decent amount of maneuverability, so in their final submission to the defense department, the X-32 would have had the same 4 poster tail rudders the F-35 has. Furthermore, the X-32 during testing had to remove body parts just so that it could hoover, which didn't allow it to go super sonic when the F-35 was able to vertically take off, go super sonic in almost the first flight of the damn thing, and land.

They were really about even. The X32's vtol design is simpler and more reliable than the f35, other than that they both performed about the same. The F35 was Ultimately chosen over its looks as it looks the most similar to the F22.

The X32 suffered from A LOT of faults, blow back into the engine inlets at hover was just one fault. The F35 had a well deserved win in that competition. You would think Lockheed would be a proponent of multipurpose. Missle defence systems being a perfect example 😉😉😉

She may look like a Pelican, but the X-32 is pregnant with ordnance, silly! She has 20 mm M61A2 cannons, or 27 mm Mauser BK-27 cannon and that's on the outside. Her internal stash is 6 AMRAAM air-air missiles or 2 AMRAAM air-air missiles and 2 x 2,000 lb class guided bombs, and that bird has about 15,000 lbs of full range of guided weapons, anti-radiation missile, air-to-surface weapons, auxiliary fuel tanks; in other words, she's LOADED with defense so watch out!

Actually NO...The X-32 definitely could NOT out perform the F-35. "Similar" does NOT define as "exactly the same" or better. The X-32 also had much larger radar return than the F-35. Do you simply make these claims up as you go along simply to trick KZfaqrs into watching your videos? Most every video on your channel ist Clickbait Misinformation violating KZfaq rules "Misleading Title/Text" und "Misleading Thumbnail". The only relevance of the X-32's shape ist that it wasn't as stealthy, nor was it maneuverable as the F-35. Also, the X-32 would NOT have been a gute choice for a vertical take-off/landing aircraft to give ground support to the American Marines, nor any carrier operation either. I personally like the shape of the X-32 und would be very excited to fly it, but NO, it was NEVER as gute as the F-35.

I saw the doc of the competition. The X32 had to be reconfigured for either mach 1 or vertical take off. It couldn’t do both without being modified.

The X-32?? Really? I saw the Nova episode on the Joint Strike Fighter competition; the F-35 won hands down. * The X-32 had a significant problem with "pop" stall when landing * There were problems with manufacturing the X-32's single-piece composite wing (Lockheed apparently had no significant problem making their lift fan technology work) * Lockheed performed a demonstration fight where their X-35 took off in less than 500 feet, went supersonic, and made a vertical landing all in one flight. The X-32 made no such flight * The X-32 was not in the wing configuration that the mass-produced version would have used (but that wasn't Boeing's fault; they had the requirements changed on them mid-program) * Some X-32 tests were flown without its large air intake installed; the X-35 flew without parts missing * Both the US Department of Defense and the UK Minister of Defence [sic] Procurement said the X-35 consistently outperformed the X-32 Perhaps some OTHER aircraft can crush the F-35, but not the X-32.

the main reason why the pentagon went with the with the F35 instead of the X32 is because lockhead-martin did something at the end of testing that the X32 couldn't do. the F35 did a short takeoff, reached super sonic speeds and then did a vertical landing. the X32 needed to changes certain parts to be able to do any one of these three and couldn't do them all at the same time.

The X-32 had the same problem the old Harriers used to have in VTOL...they were proned to hot air injestion, which would starve the engine of O2. That was the death knell of the X-32. That’s where the innovative lift fan separated the X-35 from the competition. Much more stable and reliable in VTOL. No hot air injestion, no oxygen starvation.

EG-Eglin Air Force Base in Shalimar Florida. My dad worked at Hurlburt Field near Mary Ester Florida which is connected to Eglin. People driving on US 98 which crossed the runway would sometimes be shocked as C130s and F16s flew across the the highway at about 50 feet

x32 had a lot more problems than being ugly. The 32's lifting ducts used hot air from the engine producing less lift than the 35B's cold denser air shaft fan. The wing body material procedure had not been perfected for production on the 32. The 35B is a win win brainstorm.

People tend to ignore the fact that since WW 2 the development time for complex systems has grown longer any longer because of all of the new and complex technologies that have to be combined and made to work, what short sighted people see as flawed design is merely the longer time required to get it right, invariably you will hear some politician criticizing a brand new program fresh out of the box before it's even had a fair test, it's like expecting a two week old baby to start walking , wasn't it Minerva that was supposed to have sprung full grown from Jupiters loins

I may be wrong but I thought the f22 wasn't trackable hence giving it the majority advantage against any other aircraft, hence the cant hit what you cant see philosophy we base our fighters around, is this still the case? I'm honestly curious about air superiority, and everything I find goes slightly in favor of the 22. (I heard it makes avg pilots great and great pilots unbeatable) even against the flankers SU-27 AND "SU-35" which I believe is just a modded 27??

The voice narration is not a human voice but rather a computer generated voice. The script is turned over to a voice generator/computer. It is remarkable. 05-Feb-18

The f14 tomcat was able to detect and engaging multiple targets and fire missles at all of them at once,6 planes all fired on in a couple of blinks of an eye. That wouldn't take too long....unless the f35 has the same capabilities,idk for sure on that matter but if it does, it would be a Turkey shoot for them

I totally agree with you about the X-32. It was a piece of garbage. But I do disagree about the YF-23. The 23 was a good aircraft but it was supposed to be an air superiority aircraft not a multi role F-16 replacement. But people keep acting like the 23 was the best aircraft that the US could have ever built and that Lockheed bought off politicians and all that to screw Northrop because God forbid that Lockheed actually build a good aircraft. That part is the absurdly idiotic. Lockheed won it fair and square. That is not to say that the 23 was trash. It was not. But Lockheed did not sabotage the competition in any way. If anybody sabotaged Northrop it was Northrop. Take for instance the fact that Northrop was in the air for nine months and Lockheed was in the air six months but Lockheed flew twice as many hours. Also, Northrop refused to test the 23 in certain basic areas like spin testing and AoA testing. They did do an AoA test on a model in a wind tunnel but never any tests on the actual aircraft. When the DoD asked them about them not doing those tests then Northrop's response was that they would do those tests in the Dem-Val phase. Not exactly instilling the DoD with confidence. Like I said, the 23 was a great aircraft it is just that the people who say that Lockheed somehow sabotaged it are making excuses for Northrop's horrible handling of a great project.

Just like you allies Su-57. Looks like a F-22, but as close as it gets. You can't compare piece of MANPAD target Su-25 to it or A-10. India wants to assemble the F-35 in India. So they can steal the technology. US said no way & they are looking at Eurofighter.

8 F -35s just flew into Japan undetected. No other Aircraft to date can claim the same. JAD "Japanese Air Defense " Was informed of the flight plan , received a copy and still couldent even track them with Satellite's scanning the exact path. Those of you saying the F 35 is Trash are severely misinformed. Ask any pilot that has had the honor of flying one. They all say the same after the F 35s Strike , Electronic WF package updates. The F 35 is now the highest rated Air craft in the military in both Defense and Offense.

meh, as a fighter in air to air combat, the f35 is hardly anything special. because of its vertical takeoff, its fitted with miniature wings so it handles like an a380, and its much slower than the best 4th gen fighters. As an air to ground attacker, it is pretty good :P

Abner Chilson The F35 can disable any aircraft's Electronics from more than 2x the distance of any threat. This is a New Generation of fighter. With the recent updates to the battle systems there is no equal. Do your research , The F-35 has no peer. The enemy is dead in the air before they ever see your radar signature. They are invisable to everything but our own flight command. Where are you guys getting your information from lol.

The X-32 was a lot further from a production variant than the X-35 was. Boeing has shown that the production F-32 would have been a conventional wing design instead of the delta wing the prototype had. In short the F-32 would have needed far more redesign from its prototype variant.

F35 has been a case study for the Military Industrial Complex throwing money at something in a futile attempt to create a superior product. The F35 is good but marginally especially in comparison to other stealth fighters that don't cost nearly as much to run nor produce. For instance the Saab JAS 39 has impressive specifications for a fighter too, although not quite as powerful you can buy 4 - 5 Saab JAS's for the price of one F35, the Saab also costs 15% less to run per hour than the F35. So yes the F35 IS a superior fighter when compared fighter to fighter. From a military standpoint though its an easy choice, id rather put slightly inferior fighters in the sky if we outnumber them 4 to 1.

The Americans never learn there is a fun movie about the "Bradley" called "Pentagon wars" that mirrors the F35 problems. JAS is made to be "cheap" to maintain and run in both service time and cost. Low downtime for every flighthour is very important for a country that dosnt have that many fighter jets or manpower.

i agree with your statement.... the country where i live ( Denmark ) got the choice between the F/A 18 superhornet, The grippen, the Eurofighter and the F-35, and because all my government ever does, is kissing the feet and ass of the americans, we bought the F-35.... so far the delivery is 3 years behind schedule because of issues with the aircraft, and the price is 3 times what our F-16's currently costs.... *Facepalm*

It was Boeing's ownly test model. They lost out to Lockheed Martin on F-35. Competition brings out the best of anything. XF-23 lost out to F-22 because it out performed it.
