So if someone is applying for a half $1 million grant and your pay is one or 2%. That means that you want to be advanced $5,000 - $10,000. ? With no guarantee we would successfully be awarded the grant?

The terms you agree to with a grant writer can vary. I wouldn’t agree to those terms unless some of the payment is upfront and the rest is based on if you get the grant. The grant writer should clearly outline their fees before you agree to use them. But the point is grant writers should be compensated and that doesn’t have to be based on the grant itself.
