With the double deck Alaskan Way viaduct now out of the way, redevelopment plans for the 20 acres of now available open space can kick into high gear. The Office of the Waterfront under the City of Seattle has already laid out plans for the next three to four years worth nearly $750,000,000.

As a visitor, I'm hoping Seattle will become what San Francisco did when they tore down the Embarcadero Freeway. What you had was this giant elevated highway that was noisy, looked awful, and divided the bay front and piers from the city. Now it's all pedestrian friendly. I'm glad Seattle is doing the same.

For those snarking about the "downtrodden" and the "bums", maybe you should volunteer if that is such a passion for you? But really, the Alaskan Way Viaduct has been an attractive place for homeless, since it has provided shelter for decades. It's gone now, and what will return won't provide that same covered shelter. Plus, the whole area is under construction for the next 4 years, so not very attractive for those less fortunate.

I volunteer at my local food bank and used to volunteer in Seattle, until one day we were giving out sandwiches in Pioneer Square and almost caused a riot, we were told to leave, I got kicked in the head, "we get better food free at Safeway" they said. If the city government won't do anything, and won't let the police do anything, then there's no reason to think anyone else can make a difference on the streets. It's a free for all in Seattle, just ask any retailer

Dude you are looking from the outside in. You don’t live or work around them. The drug addicts don’t care about a dam thing. Needles everywhere they steal whatever they want and no one can do a dam thing. Notice I said drug addicts that’s what they all are. Seattle doesn’t have a homeless problem it’s a drug issue. People that are truly homeless are using the resources that are out there. Which I am very happy to help pay for. You ask why don’t anyone volunteer ? Because I rather go read a book to kid that wants to learn and become a productive member of society. I work right in the mess downtown and these people I can tell have no motive to become anything for our city. They are like termites eat the whole tree and on to the next!

For all people who think that we should have a very awful city to fight homless problem. This won't work. There is no way to make a city sooo bad that homless people will leave it. Normal people will as they have a choice (i.e. money). There are many ways of dealing with homless people camping in parks. In New York lots of places have signs that says park closes at 11pm and opens at 7am (or something like this). There are no gates but police can evict anybody from that place during closed hours. Let's make Seattle better. Not a place which is void of people because it only has office buildings and parking lots. Bellevue is going in the same wrong way as Seattle with all the tall office building construction.
