Well he's a former SNCO or Warrant Officer (it's a requirement to be a Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London). So he probably had a huge amount of sympathy for the guard and wanted to give the tourist more of an earful.

uc0t the training doesn't remove our emotions or feeling etc. At no level do the army want or need emotionless automatons. It defies everything we do, even to trying to stay alive on the battlefield. If you buy into that belief that's fine. But it's wrong. A lot of them have younger siblings or children. And most guardsmen are actually top blokes. As long as you're very respectful and ask first they don't mind a photo or someone close. It is nice to hear of the Soldier being nice to the kid. As I said there's a chance he's got a younger brother or nephew or son etc. But thank you for sharing the memory with us.

The guards are NOT “Beefeaters.” The guard duty rotates between regiments. “Beefeaters” are retired senior NCOs and Warrant Officers who only serve at the Tower of London.

The beefeaters, yeomen warders have been around since the Tudor times (founded by Henry VII in 1485) they have the red and white rose as a crest type thing (white rose of York and red rose of Lancaster).

@La Nausée No it is NOT their job to tolerate humiliation by anyone, much less foreign tourists. Anyone who heckles or becomes a nuisance will be dealt with by either their Officer, or the police who are never far away. Their" job description" is that of any other Serving Soldier in the military. If tourists are so ignorant and disrespectful they do not understand they are there for a purpose, stay away. They aren't there just for photographs.

If I remember correctly they don't actually have to say anything to you, it's more a courtesy then anything because if they chose to they could just keep marching right through you without saying a word. They are also allowed to shoot you too, and if they did they wouldn't be prosecuted for it since they are considered an extension of the queen and if they shoot you while on duty it is automatically assumed they had good reason.

Correct. These are soldiers on duty. It's wrong to disrespect them. I like that the officer gave her a very polite but mature lecture and hopefully made her feel stupid. He didn't attempt to scare her and insult her, he just told her how immature and rude she was.

@Chris Richardson You are correct that the rifles are unloaded. However, all guards carry ammunition while on duty and the bayonet does not "plug the end of the barrel" as many says, it is attached underneath it. So you may be technically right, but the overall point is still correct.

Some people seem not to know what it means to "pick up ones glove". Throwing a glove on someone means calling for a duel. Picking up the glove means accepting it. Accepting a duel with an unarmed girl would be not honourable for the Kings Guard, armed with gun, bajonett and sword.
