I bought my C63 AMG for cheap because the seller thought the engine was bad. Today we find out by taking it apart and by performing an electronic compression test. I'll also give you a pre-purchase inspection tip that could save you thousands of dollars and a lot of headaches by avoiding a basket case car. Kind of like my C63.

Great news on the cams! Another thing I do with my ML63 is always wait for the idle to drop before moving the car on a cold start/sitting overnight to give the oil system some time to circulate. Takes under 30 sec, but good thing to do for a race motor before you put load on it. (For others) One other test you can do that is not a lot of money (around $40) is a NAPA "Block Tester" kit to see if the head gasket is leaking on the M156. It checks to see if you have combustion gases in your antifreeze. You can do a youtube search for "Napa block tester" to see how the kit works.

LegitStreetCars mentioned that he is looking for a V12 car now. Here is an idea: W/V140, 600SEL/S600 V12 - of course it is not as fast and exhilarating as the newer vehicles that this channel has been focused on so far, but is considered to be the last over-engineered (arguably) Mercedes-Benz, that was developed for almost a decade starting in the 1980's with over $1,000,000,000 Dollars invested in its development. (Not accounting for inflation) This was also the first time Mercedes used a V12 engine since World War II - where they would have their Daimler-Benz DB 600 series aircraft engines installed in airplanes such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109E. It is also possible to find a modified versions of the W140 body style by various tuner companies, such as AMG, Renntech, Carlsson, Lorinser, Brabus, Lotec, Wald, Vaeth and Koenig Specials (C140). (There are probably more.) It is important to remember that this M120 engine proved to be very promising to the point where Pagani took it, increased its displacement to 7.3 Liters and put it in their Zonda. In my opinion, the most interesting example of modifying the M120 engine was by Carlsson - getting it to 7.4 Liters, mating it with a 6-Speed manual transmission and putting that in the R129 body - Carlsson SL 600 7.4L V12 C74 Le Mans. Needless to say, diving and exploring such content will open this channel for a wider Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts crowd to discover and appreciate. If you think that this information is worthwhile, please upvote for LegitStreetCars to see this.

Mikey Smith the 320 V6 is not a enjoyable engine... it’s a lazy engine...it doesn’t like to take revs (my father had a C320). The 350 V6 is much more dynamic. It has good torque and loves to go up in the revs. I had my SLK350 for a couple of days at AMG and with light mods, and not that expensive, the car had a 0 to 100 kph close to the AMG version of the SLK and wasn’t limited to 250 kph anymore... I drove back to Belgium on the autobahn over 300kph most of the time... Had to slow down because my right calf was cramping from keeping the gas pedal to the floor all the time! No big deal as I was close to the border anyway. The car had a much better sound too

Urine sampled after squirting revealed that the bladder had been emptied again, revealing the origin of the squirted liquid.

Useful stuff...here in OZ....If a car is badly damaged and its written off by an insurance company..ie, they pay you out on the agreed value, the car can only be sold at auction for parts. All the complience plates are removed and destroyed. That means a badly damaged car cannot find its way to an unsuspecting buyer later. Its a good system. Also, here the vin number is microdotted onto all major components just to make it more difficult to rebirth it. If you have to replace the engine for example, it has to be done at a dealership where they use a factory tool to apply the vin again. The tool has a 28 character password that changes everytime its used, and in the case of BMW you have to be logged into the factory system in Germany to enter the password. Those Germans are finicky. But its what protects the resale value. There are few independent repairers here for luxury cars as a result.

The test you showed is only a "relative compression" test. If for example all of the cylinders had low compression it would still pass, because the computer can only measure how one cylinder is performing compared to the other ones and point it out. You can do this test on any vehicle with a high current clamp on the battery cable and an automotive oscilloscope. But it's nice that Mercedes has it built into the scan tool.

Great video. Engine nice and clean. I do think that a lot of cam wear for miles. Did the engine have synthetic oil or regular. I pulled engines apart running synthetic oil that looked better with little or almost no signs of wear at 80 to 100,000 miles. I do a trick I put a Neodymium ring magnet on the bottom of the oil filter. The three things I do, oil analysis and oil pressure check, and compression of engine tells all. And look the engine up. Case and point the Ford Taurus the water pump is in the engine and if it leaks the coolant goes right in the crankcase, and contaminates the oil leading to bearing failer. If the bearing goes bad since it is timing chain driven it will trash the engine since it is an interference type. (The pic has no political affiliation it's just a Donkey)

Great work- love how you're really thorough. Great idea close visual inspection on the oil and sending a sample to Blackstone. You're going to have a super nice C63 at a deep discount. Sweet!

Learning all I can about M156 - I had to laugh when you said see if the dealer will let you inspect the camshafts. Most dealers in this country will barely let you open the bonnet! :p

I don’t trust the electronic compression test. I’ve had a few known low compression engines and it still comes up as ok.

@@dkaloupis75 sadly no. I have done so on a fair few om642 engines, om651 and they came up ok with the electronic test. but when doing a manual was a different story. problems included bent valves, rings gone, bore damage etc etc

At 5:57 you mention a "1975 IBM Laptop." I think that you might have clarified that it is a Model 1975 IBM Thinkpad, circa 2003 or 2004. That simply clears up anyone who might be thinking that the laptop was actually made in 1975 . . .
