Just over three years ago I changed out the thermal compound inside the PS4 Pro for liquid metal, which is what Sony used for the PS5. Today I wanted to open it back up and see how the liquid metal is holding up years later.

To clean "dried out" LM you apply a fresh drop of LM and that will liquify it again. Allowing you to remove it easily with cotton, If you use Alcohol it makes a reaction and the LM goes black.

Also always use the screw that came from that hole. Even if its 10 identical screws. Put the same ones back from where they came from. But yeah, slightly backwards till you hear, feel it getting into its original thread and then put it in. Also always put in your screws in an X fashion. Don't start going round. Put one in top left, then bottom right. Top right, bottom left and so on. Tighten them a bit but not fully. Then go in the same X, alternation pattern again when tighening them down propperly secure. This goes from putting screws in a playstation to bolts when changing a wheel on your car.

As a materials scientist, I would like everyone to understand that the liquid metal did not "dry out" in the usual sense. It reacted with the metal of the heat sink (primarily, from the look of it. The surface of the chip looks basically ok) and what you see on the chip is a residual solid metal of a new composition. It will not be possible to remove the reacted material from the heat sink, as this is incorporated into the heat sink and is in fact an alloy of the heat sink metal and the liquid metal. It may still be possible to use another type of thermal paste to bridge the air gap. This should not be a problem with the PS5 system as it was designed with compatible materials or coatings to enable the use of a liquid metal for thermal contact. One concern would be that as this reaction takes place the thermal contact should/could have been greatly reduced. It is a good thing that this PS4 wasn't used that much.

Silly question then - so I should not panic that my de-lidded Intel processor may be “dried out” underneath the IHS? I’ve always heard that liquid metal was a bad idea to use on copper. Perhaps this is why.
@EvanOfTheDarkness
@EvanOfTheDarkness 2 жыл бұрын
@@FasuloA Most quality heatsinks are nickel plated, and that should protect the copper from reacting (alloying) with the liquid metal. If you had just a bare copper heatsink, I'd suggest investing in a better quality heatsink, after all what's the point of using a cheap heatsink with liquid metal?
@infopackrat
@infopackrat 2 жыл бұрын
So can liquid metal be used then? Would a second application work since the reaction has already taken place?
@infopackrat

Could one nickel plate the copper? Electroplating isn't that complicated
@EvanOfTheDarkness
@EvanOfTheDarkness 2 жыл бұрын
@@infopackrat In theory yes, you could plate the copper, but just buying one already nickel plated is way easier (and probably cheaper). A second application will probably last longer, but you can tell that the reacted layer is not fully protective, the gallium in the compound will slowly diffuse into the copper and react with it over time.

When I googled about it I found out it is not so good idea to apply liquid metal(Gallium based) on bare aluminum or copper. It seems Copper heatsink would need to be coated with another metal (like nickel)

I did mine in march 2019 (Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Liquid Metal). In January 2022 my PS4 Pro was immediately in airplane mode (fan at full speed) when I loaded in my save game from Horizon Zero Dawn. I knew my cooling was compromised because normaly it stayed two sound levels lower (stock paste is only one level lower). Disassembled my Playstation 4 Pro and it looked just like yours: dry. I sanded it down (only slightly, to make sure the surface is flat) with some sandpaper 1000 grit. Reapplied Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Liquid Metal and it's nice and quiet again.

Funny. Came here again after your recent vid on a possible design flaw with the PS5 starting to show up when placed vertical, with liquid metal leaking. I think this may explain recent problems with my own launch unit where it’s been overheating and crashing regularly, and even fried the ssd expansion I had placed in it. I play a lot though. I ended up just replacing the unit as I was well beyond warraunty, but I would be curious if this was indeed the issue. It would make sense. And I suspect Sony knows more than they are letting on as we enter out rumored 4th redesign internally with a potential removable disc drive coming up. People had speculated on overheating as a potential reason Sony delayed enabling the ssd expansion for so long, and I’m curious if these are related.

The problem with the PS4 cooling is there are two fan variants, one spews dust into a crevice next to the fan and the other spews it directly into the heatsink. The dust builds up overtime and that's why you get PS4's that get very loud. If you are unfortunate enough to get the second fan (like I was) then cleaning it out every now and again (heatsink and all) will completely negate the problem. I have pictures of fully caked heatsinks and video clips of a whisper quiet PS4 PRO running God of War in an area that would normally make it fly off.

Its usually gallium with a bit of indium and tin added based on the manufactures specifications for longevity, viscosity, etc. it eats through aluminum. Copper is completely safe with it, but it will stain copper over time. So thats what you see on the heatsink, staining, but it doesn’t affect the thermal performance. It will completely eat away aluminum and destroy it though.

LM is great for use on nickel plated copper heatspreaders. NOT on copper plated aluminum heatsinks. On pure copper heatsinks the gallium diffuses into the copper leaving behind the indium and tin which both provide poor thermal contact and can cause shorts if they break free due to vibration. Plus, you'll have to reapply regularly to maintain proper thermal contact. With copper plated aluminum, that gallium diffuses through the copper and will attack the aluminum. As time goes on in either case you'll have degrading thermals and a system that will die sooner than if you had just stuck to paste. Do not use LM unless the system was designed for it or your components are made of the proper materials to handle it.

The ps4 is still valuable because it’s hard for people to get the next gen consoles and there are still a lot of cross gen games that are coming out currently. So many games have been delayed that games that started development with the ps4/Xbox one in mind are coming out this year, and they’re gonna be on the old and new consoles. It might not be as good on the ps4, but if you want to play some of these games this is probably the easiest way right now. Did it overheat?? I'm currently looking into thermal paste, a new fan. Cooling pads but can someone shed some light on What happend? And what I can do for better temp controll?

I hear people talking a lot about ps4 noises and whatnot but I never had any issues honestly. But I did have a marble top in which the console sat on. This could be why I've never had any issues with fan noises and all that

My PS4 Pro still sounds like it's going to rocket into orbit. It's so loud I can barely hear my games. I've changed the thermal paste twice (I used the Arctic Blue) and still the same problem. I'm thinking it's the fan maybe.

I solved the noise problem on my pro by getting rid of those tiny black pads pressing on the chips and replacing them with thermal grizzly thermal pads that covered each chip completely.

I bought a used one a month ago. I paid right about what they cost new. Took it apart and cleaned out the dust, and applied new Arctic 5 thermal compound and a 1TB SSD. I usually buy a console right at the end of the lifecycle, but they never went on sale and just disappeared from shelves suddenly this time.

@@Dasaltwarrior Yeah! That's at least one good thing Sony are doing. Allowing those who are stuck on last gen to play some of these games. Shame they didn't get to be fully PS5 games. But these last 2 years have proven it was probably for the best Sony made a few of these games cross gen. Yeah! Series S us actually worth getting I think. I didn't used to think this as a a few of the OG Xbox, 360 and One X enhanced games are not enhanced on Series S. But Microsoft have been making these recent Xbox One or Series X games enhanced on Series S thankfully.

The sad thing for consoles is that Xboxes are limited to SATA 2 and Playstation consoles are connected via USB 3.0 bus to SATA...so, being SATA 3 will only allow to fully saturate the USB 3.0 bus that connects to a SATA converter (Learned about it when fail0verflow talked about the PS4)

Bought my PS4 Pro 6 mos before PS5 came out. Console shortage was so bad I overpaid above MSRP. But the console shortage has somehow gotten even worse and it seems like I can still sell it used for what I paid for it new. And I still use the PS4 Pro when my main room w PS5 is occupied (albeit rarely). So I am incentivized to hold onto both PS4 Pro & PS5. And this is why there’s a shortage.

This got me thinking... What does this mean for future conservation of the PS5 consoles? Wouldn't it be safe to say that say 5+ years down the line the liquid metal would be insufficient for cooling due to crusting over, so without replacing it properly wouldn't pretty much all ps5's have a sort of death sentence almost like the CMOS issue? Because simply put not everyone will be able to replace their liquid metal. Thank you. Happy new years!

Liquid metal works better, but often degrades faster. It does indeed mean there is a risk of overheating causing a degradation in performance and failure in a few years. Can't really comment on the risks involved though so it may be a non issue.

Well the drying likely die to people using liquid metal in setups not intended for it. The PS5 was designed for liquid metal so it will likely be setup in such a way to prevent or reduce drying

Bought both mine used at just above $200, had to shop a bit. One I got about 6 months back the other a couple years. The launch one I paid full price. Would’ve bought a PS5 by now if they had them at retail. Won’t pay scalpers who intentionally manipulate the market. Rather leave them holding them bag when production finally catches up. I mod most my consoles when the reach EOS.
