Totally agree with everything said here. The HubNut socials have just got this 'vibe' which is so friendly and welcoming, without being pushy. You could go to one, speak to nobody at all, and still feel like you were part of it. Ian's knowledge is insane, too. He seems to just know so much, without acting like he knows anything at all. Great bloke! I wouldn't write that on his channel, obvs. I'd just take the piss out of him!

We used to own one of these when I was about 12, I thought it was amazing and so futuristic, the rotating dials and clever indicator and light controls were so cool for a young lad. It did however appear to take ages for the suspension to fill up and be ready to be driven and I also remember saying that was why the police probably didn’t use then as pursuit cars, now a little older, I realise that was not the ‘only’ reason.

That's the beauty of many KZfaq-channels on cars, that you can subscribe to a few and then choose to watch the videos of the car-models you're interested in or of cars you like to know more about. And variety is what makes the world of cars interesting, ranging from old 2 CV's to the latest Ferrari-model and everything in between. Thanks for this one, as the GS/GSA is a distinctive car with dito sound I quite like. I do gotta admit that that is something I miss in many (not all) recent cars: distinctive looks and sounds.

To take a line from The Silence Of The Lambs, we covet what we see every day. In the early 80s, on my way to my grandparents house I would walk past an Audi dealership that had a row of coupes outside, ranging from base model to Quattro. I fell in love with them. In the mid 90s I bought one, a two wheel drive normally aspirated version. It needed, and got, new shocks, and I enjoyed driving it. I gave it to my brother rather than sell it. The only car I’ve still got a longing for is a blue SWB Series 2 Landrover with white wheels. My grandad had one when I was little and I loved it.

Anyone with lots of money can buy a perfect example of a universally desired car but to buy something that has fallen between the motoring public's stools so to speak and keep it running on an average budget is a real achievement. Long may he continue to do what he does and people out there please support him. Thanks James for your support of one of the best motoring KZfaq channels around.

Drove my boss's GSA back from Heathrow to N. London back in the day. He didn't warn that the throttle tended to stick when pressed firmly to the floor - fortunately not a huge power output. There was a prog on TV showing converted GS being used in Africa with track stretched to equal the spacing of the ruts left by heavy trucks - apparently the air cooled engine was seen as a good thing given the climate.

James: Use ALL the revs does mean use them really ALL! I owned a similar GSA with the same 1299cc 65HP engine and drow it on the German Autobahn using all 8000+ revs the little turbine-like engine offers, averaging 175 km/h on a 4 hour drive! The car doesn´t have a rev limiter and the overhead camshafts boxer engine just likes to rev and revs like hell!

Around forty years ago my boss was given a GSA as a company car. He hated it, didn't consider it a worthy car for his status, so he always drove it flat out using all the revs in the hope that he would break it. The car loved it, and was still going strong long after he had left the company!

@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, hard to believe such an old car could take 8000+ rpm for a prolonged time, even if it is technically possible with so small cylinders. Sure the revcounter didnt have quite a bit of error at those revs? 175 is likewise equally fast for so low hp, but also technically possible if you had a tailwind and otherwise favorable weather conditions. Well done.

@@GoldenCroc actually that engine was engineered to exactly do this... at that time Honda engines following the same engineering principles (small stroke, bigger bore, overhead camshaft) did rev more then 10k! I would love to have a flat four air cooled hatchback. I'd have to sully the interior with a stereo (and maybe a seat, if the squab was horrifically short. Can't abide short squabs - I have legs that are too lazy to support themselves!). But something like this (or a 2CV) would be lovely to tool around in, ferrying dogs and fetching sticks errr shopping and bouncing around enjoying the view while remembering how to drive something with 'character'. Heaven, for me, would be an Avantime with a flat four air cooled apparatus - probably with a laggy turbo and an auto box, just to make sure it didn't try to go all Nurburgring on me and kept to lolloping around, like a box full of people/dogs/personal belongings should. With character - not with Vectra. Also a Caterham/Atom for dry days (because I don't drive the Porsche in the wet anyway - might as well not have a roof). I'm 60, not dead!

In the 70's Down Under in Australia - the GS was fairly rare... people were astonished at the comfort and space for 4 people plus luggage swiftly covering huge distances at 70-80 mph fatigue free... including stunning road holding, ride and brakes.... Maybe the best small car of all time... after the 2CV. A couple of hints. The single spoke steering wheel started with the DS in 1955, off-centre curve for safety and exceptional vision of the dash instruments. Before seat belts it would deflect you inwards and could not stab you... a regular issue at the time. Having driven DSs, IDs, GSs, CXs & 2CVs all with non self cancelling blinks, it was the best. Lift your finger each time you wanted them on or off. Fab in corners, roundabouts, lane changes.. best with the CX & GSA rocker switches...

I really miss the non-self-cancelling indicators on my old Citroens! Turning them off becomes a mindless habit and they are very light to use. On other cars, though, having to overcome a really heavy detente to turn the indicators on is really annoying, which explains why a lot of people don't bother. It's even worse having to do it twice when they cancel just by getting into the turn-lane. This also explains why people turn from the middle of the road, rather than bothering with the turn lane.

However, I found them to be preoccupied with impressing others with their wealth, with fashion (a fool's pursuit if ever there were one!), and generally judging others more than their cars. I've had far more fun in generic car clubs and with unpretentious motorheads. Back in '91, on a trip to the UK from Oz, a motor-noter friend loaned me his beat-up old GS Pallas; thank you, David! It was great fun in a Gallic sort of way (funny-French, in other words) but it got us around perfectly well, entertained us with its suspension, was comfortable and economical. I replaced the inevitable door handle (a weak point, those) and was a little surprised at how easy it was for me to replace in inboard front brake pads, as the existing ones were well past their use-by date. All in all, a fun three weeks!

The first-generation Uno had similar, as did a few Giugiaro designs, more extensions of the instrument pod towards the wheel, but seems most reverted to the normal stalks. I wonder how much of it is influenced by fleet owners or journalists who drive lots of cars. No matter how 'odd' a car is when it is 'your car' it doesn't really matter. If swapping between them becomes a pain but in the real world how often does that happen.

James…totally agree about the car meetings…a group of rich scaffolders, dodgy builders and equally dodge lottery winners charging across Europe in “super cars” at arrest worthy speed sprinting in second gear from one hotel to the next whilst stopping in lay-bys to take pictures, wave virtual Willy’s and tell lies to each other is not for me…the very last thing I would do with my GT3 RS…well it would be if I had one. No..good honest should driving loved rubbish is vastly better…and I HATE “pops and bangs”….good work on the GS…better ones are a available though!😀😀😀😀

I love the fact you do cars like this and not all fast cars, my Pa had two of these when I was a child, we all loved them, I think one came with a Louvred back window, very racy!!!! 👍👍

Enjoyed that. As a Hubnut subscriber and huge fan of Ian's, it's nice to know that those with the supercar tastes can also appreciate the old tat that Hubnutters enjoy. I also own a GSA, as well as a Visa Special (look it up!) and MX5 BBR turbo and equally enjoy the fast and slow. In all honesty the slow cars' pace and character suit UK roads and provide endless driving pleasure

Bought a GS1220 in February 1973 and that summer did a trip to the West Country. Unfortunately on the return trip the gearbox decided to jam in 4th resulting in a very careful drive back to Bexleyheath late in the small hours to avoid traffic. Luckily I was within the SIX MONTHS warranty and Citroen repaired it.

I learnt to drive in a Citroen GS1220 Convertisseur in 1975. Amazing car. I liked the dash and don’t agree it was like a kit car. The button on the right was for the heater which was electric this being an air cooled car, instant heat on a winters morning. Yes the radio was between the seats. It had a semi automatic gearbox with an electric clutch so had a gear lever but no clutch pedal believe it or not. This meant that I had to take my test in a BSM Mk 1 escort. Probably the most comfortable car I’ve ever driven.

This was kind of the ancestor to the BX, my grandad had two of those and I remember as a kid it was like being in some kind of spaceship when the rear suspension raised itself, and I remember the strange indicator switch on the dash too lol

As a confirmed Hubnut follower, as well as an 'I drive a classic' Steph and Furious Driving addict, I was delighted to see your take on Giselle. I look forward to ploughing through your back catalogue. Ian does some fun stuff and I wear a t shirt or two of his. No one here in Mississauga seems to recognize it!

Really interesting video, James. Well done. Being a loyal and long time subscriber to Hubnut, I have seen lots about Giselle. I find it enthralling to hear what you have to say about the old girl. Ian certainly does have a wide and varied enjoyment of things automotive. I wish I were on that side of the Atlantic to take part. Oh, well. Just have to make do with KZfaq. This was a great video. Keep up the good work.

We had a 1.3 GS at home and travelled all over Europe with the family and tonnes of camping gear in it. It even put big cars to shame when it went off road. The suspension was epic, as was the sahara beige color.

Interesting bit of trivia, the chevron was based on a thing that Andre saw while visiting Poland and got inspired by that

I have fond memories of my 1220 GS which we have lpg added after the fuel crisis of the 70’s the tank sat in the boot and still left lots of room. Range with both fuels was over a thousand miles

Remember getting a later BX as a hire car on a business trip. We spent most of the time playing with the height control sat at the lights. Then tried it on the low setting while driving and pretending we were in a go kart as you could feel every bump in the road, crazy weird cars.

Watching the GSA speed past makes me wonder just how eye catching my dad's yellow 1972 GS must have been, back then.

I learnt to drive in a GS and had many in the past so,advanced could remove the engine with just a trolley jack.I used to take out the headlights to reach the front spark plugs!! Usually as much oil on the outside of the engine as on the inside but they would always fire up first time or crank using the starting handle -happy days

I bought a GS break in 1971 and followed it with another one in 73. I used them extensively in large animal veterinary practice, I loved the cars. I now live in France and you see very few GSs around, I presume the rust got to them. I learnt to drive in my father’s Light 15 and then his DS19 so it felt great to be continuing the family tradition.

Ah, the plucky Giselle, what a cracking little car it is too. I met Ian at the northern social and he is a true gent. Wonderful atmosphere at those things; if Carling did car meets ;-) Keep up the videos and hope to see you at a HubNut social some time next year. KZfaq has created a wonderful community!
